Deuteronomy 3
1 Then turned we and went up, the way of Bashan; and Og king of Bashan, came out to meet us, he, and all his people, to give battle at Edrei.
Toen wij de richting van Basjan insloegen en verder trokken, rukte Og, de koning van Basjan, met al zijn volk naar Edréi op, om ons te bestrijden.
2 And Yahweh said unto me: Do not fear him, for into thy hand, have I delivered him and all his people and his land, —so then thou shalt do unto him, as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites who was dwelling in Heshbon.
Maar Jahweh sprak tot mij: Vrees hem niet; want Ik heb hem met al zijn volk en zijn land in uw handen geleverd. Ge moet met hem doen, zoals gij gedaan hebt met Sichon, den koning der Amorieten, die in Chesjbon woonde.
3 Then did Yahweh our God deliver into our hand, Og also, king of Bashan and all his people, —so we smote him until there was not left remaining to him a survivor.
En Jahweh, onze God, leverde Og, den koning van Basjan, met al zijn volk in onze handen, en wij versloegen hem, zodat er niemand ontkwam.
4 And we captured all his cities, at that time, there was no fortress which we took not from them, —sixty cities all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
Wij namen toen al zijn steden in; er was geen vesting, die wij niet veroverden. Het waren zestig steden over heel de streek van Argob, dat het rijk van Og van Basjan vormde;
5 All these, were fortified cities each with a high wall, folding gates and a bar, —besides country towns exceeding many.
alle versterkt met hoge muren, poorten en grendels, behalve nog de zeer talrijke open plaatsen.
6 And we devoted them to destruction, doing unto them as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, —devoting to destruction every city of males, the women, and the little ones.
Wij sloegen ze met de ban, zoals wij met Sichon, den koning van Chesjbon, hadden gedaan, en troffen er alle steden met mannen, vrouwen en kinderen mee.
7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, made we our prey.
Al het vee met de buit van de steden behielden we voor onszelf.
8 Thus did we at that time take the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites (which was over the Jordan), —from the ravine of Arnon as far as Mount Hermon.
Zo veroverden wij toen op de beide koningen der Amorieten, die in het Overjordaanse waren, het land van de beek Arnon af tot aan het Hermongebergte,
9 Sidonians, call Hermon Sirion, —but, the Amorites, call it Senir.
(de Sidoniërs noemen de Hermon Sirjon, de Amorieten noemen hem Senir),
10 All the cities of the table-land, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, —unto Salecah, and Edrei, —cities of the kingdom of Og, in Bashan.
met al de steden van de vlakte, van heel Gilad en Basjan tot aan Salka en Edréi toe, die tot het koninkrijk van Og van Basjan behoorden.
11 For, only Og, king of Bashan was left remaining of the remnant of the giants, lo! his bedstead, was a bedstead of iron, is not, the same, in Rabbath of the sons of Ammon? nine cubits, the length thereof and four cubits, the breadth thereof, by the fore-arm of a man.
Og, de koning van Basjan, was de laatst overgeblevene der Refaïeten; zijn sarcofaag van bazalt bevindt zich te Rabbat-Ammon, en is negen el lang en vier el breed, naar de gewone el.
12 And this land, took we in possession at that time, —from Aroer which is by the ravine of Arnon, and half the hill-country of Gilead and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites;
Nadat wij toen dat land in bezit hadden genomen, gaf ik het van Aroër af, dat aan de beek Arnon ligt, en de helft van het Gilad-gebergte met zijn steden aan de Rubenieten en Gadieten.
13 but the remainder of Gilead, and all Bashan the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh, —all the region of the Argob with all Bashan. The same, is called, A land of giants.
De rest van Gilad met heel Basjan, het koninkrijk van Og, dus de hele streek Argob, gaf ik aan de halve stam van Manasse; (dit hele Basjan werd het land der Refaïeten genoemd).
14 Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob, as far as the boundary of the Geshurites, and the Maachathites, —and called them after his own name The Bashan of Havvoth-jair unto this day.
Jaïr, de zoon van Manasse, ontving heel de streek Argob tot aan het land der Gesjoerieten en Maäkatieten, en noemde haar naar zijn naam, kampementen van Jaïr, zoals ze nu nog heten;
15 And, unto Machir, gave I Gilead;
aan Makir gaf ik het ene gedeelte van Gilad.
16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites, gave I—from Gilead even as far as the ravine of Arnon, the middle of the ravine and boundary, —even as far as the Jabbok ravine, the boundary of the sons of Ammon;
Aan de Rubenieten en de Gadieten gaf ik het andere gedeelte van Gilad tot de beek Arnon, halverwege die beek, welke de grens vormde, en tot aan de beek Jabbok, de grens der Ammonieten;
17 the Waste Plain also and the Jordan and boundary, —from Chinnereth, even as far as the sea of the Waste Plain the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah, on the east.
bovendien de Araba, met de Jordaan als grens, van Gennezaret af tot aan de Araba-Zee, de Zoutzee, onder de hellingen van de Pisga in het oosten.
18 So I commanded you, at that time saying, —Yahweh your God hath given unto you this land to possess it, armed, shall ye pass over before your brethren the sons of Israel all the sons of valour,
Maar ik gaf u toen het volgende bevel: Jahweh uw God, heeft u wel dit land in bezit gegeven, maar gij moet met alle weerbare mannen, welbewapend aan de spits van uw israëlietische broeders oversteken;
19 Only, your wives and your little ones and your cattle—I know that ye have much cattle—shall abide in your cities which I have given unto you;
alleen uw vrouwen, uw kinderen en uw vee—en ik weet, dat gij veel vee bezit—mogen achterblijven in de steden, die ik u heb gegeven.
20 until that Yahweh shall give rest unto your brethren, as well as you, so shall, they too, possess the land which, Yahweh your God, is giving unto them, over the Jordan, —then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given unto you.
Eerst als Jahweh aan uw broeders rust heeft verschaft, zoals aan u, en ook zij het land bezitten, dat Jahweh, uw God, hun aan de overzijde van de Jordaan zal schenken, mag ieder van u terugkeren naar zijn bezit, dat ik hem heb gegeven.
21 Joshua also, commanded I, at that time saying, —Thine are the eyes, that have seen all that Yahweh your God hath done unto these two kings, thus, will Yahweh do unto all the kingdoms whereunto thou, art passing over:
Ik heb toen Josuë bevolen: Met eigen ogen hebt ge alles aanschouwd, wat Jahweh, uw God, met deze twee koningen heeft gedaan. Zo zal Jahweh ook met alle koninkrijken doen, waartegen gij optrekt.
22 ye shall not fear them, —for, Yahweh your God, he, it is that is fighting for you.
Vrees hen dus niet; want Jahweh, uw God, zal zelf voor u strijden.
23 Then sought I Yahweh at that time, for a favour saying:
Ik bad toen Jahweh nog om ontferming, en sprak:
24 My Lord Yahweh, thou thyself, hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy firm hand, —as to which, what GOD is there, in the heavens or in the earth, that can do according to thy doings, and according to thy mighty deeds?
Jahweh, mijn Heer, Gij zijt begonnen uw dienaar uw grootheid en uw krachtige hand te laten aanschouwen; want welke God in de hemel of op de aarde wrocht zulke werken en machtige daden als Gij?
25 Let me pass over, I pray thee that I may see the good land that is over the Jordan, —this good mountain, and the Lebanon.
Ach, laat mij naar de overkant trekken, en het heerlijke land aanschouwen, aan de andere zijde van de Jordaan, dat schone gebergte met de Libanon.
26 But Yahweh had been provoked with me for your sakes, and hearkened not unto me, —and Yahweh said unto me, Enough for thee! do not add a word unto me further in this matter.
Maar Jahweh bleef vergramd tegen mij om uwentwil, en wilde niet naar mij horen. En Jahweh sprak tot mij: Genoeg, ge moogt er Mij niet meer over spreken.
27 Ascend the top of the Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes—westward, and northward and southward and eastward—and see with thine own eyes, —for thou shalt not pass over this Jordan.
Bestijg de top van de Pisga, sla uw ogen op naar het westen en noorden, het zuiden en oosten; ge moogt het aanschouwen, maar gij zult de Jordaan niet oversteken.
28 But command thou Joshua and confirm him and embolden him, —for, he, shall pass over before this people, and, he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.
Draag het bevel over aan Josuë, bemoedig en sterk hem, want hij zal aan de spits van dit volk naar de overkant trekken en hen in bezit stellen van het land dat gij ziet
29 So we abode in the valley, over against Beth-peor.
Zo bleven we in de vallei tegenover Bet-Peor.
