Deuteronomy 20

1 When thou shalt go out to wage war against thine enemy, and shalt see the horses and chariots of a people more in number than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them, —for, Yahweh thy God, is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Lorsque tu iras en guerre contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des cavaliers et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, n'aie point de crainte? car le Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir de la terre d'Egypte, est avec toi.

2 And it shall be, when ye are coming nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;

Au moment de combattre, le grand prêtre s'avancera et parlera au peuple disant:

3 and shall say unto them, —Hear, O Israel, ye are coming near to-day, unto battle against your enemies, —let not your heart faint do not fear nor start nor quake because of them.

Ecoutez, enfants d'Israël: Vous allez livrer bataille à vos ennemis; conservez votre fermeté de cœur, n'ayez point de crainte, ne rompez pas les rangs, ne vous détournez pas de leur face.

4 For Yahweh your God, is he that is going with you, —to fight for you against your enemies to save you.

Car le Seigneur votre Dieu, qui marche à votre tête, combattra vos ennemis et vous sauvera.

5 Then shall the officers speak unto the people saying, Who is the man that hath built a new house and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man dedicate it.

Les scribes aussi parleront au peuple, disant: Est-il parmi vous un homme qui, ayant bâti une maison neuve, n'en ait point fait la dédicace? Qu'il parte, qu'il retourne en sa maison s'il craint de succomber en ce combat, et qu'un autre que lui ne fasse cette dédicace.

6 And who is the man that hath planted a vineyard and hath not thrown it open? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and another man, throw it open.

Est-il un homme qui ait planté une vigne et n'en ait point joui? Qu'il parte, qu'il retourne en sa maison, s'il craint de succomber en ce combat, et qu'un autre que lui ne jouisse de sa vigne.

7 And who is the man that hath betrothed a wife and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man, take her.

Est-il un homme qui ait épousé une femme et ne l'ait pas encore possédée? Qu'il parte, qu'il retourne en sa maison, s'il craint de succomber en ce combat, et qu'un autre que lui ne possède sa femme.

8 Then shall the officers further speak unto the people, and say—Who is the man that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, —lest his brethren’s heart melt as well as his heart.

Et les scribes continueront de parler au peuple, disant: Est-il un homme qui tremble et qui en son cœur ait crainte? Qu'il parte, et qu'il retourne en sa maison pour qu'il ne rende pas craintif, comme le sien, le cœur de son frère.

9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, then shall they appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

Et, des que les scribes auront cessé de parler, ils placeront les chefs de l'armée à la tête du peuple.

10 When thou shalt come nigh unto a city, to fight against it, —then shalt thou proclaim unto it—peace,

Et si vous êtes près d'une ville pour donner l'assaut ou inviter les habitants à la paix:

11 and it shall be if peace, be the answer it giveth thee, and it open unto thee, then shall it be, that, all the people that are found therein, shall become thy tributaries and shall serve thee.

S'ils vous répondent pacifiquement, s'ils vous ouvrent leurs portes, que tout ce peuple, que tous ceux par vous trouvés en cette ville, soient vos tributaires et vos sujets.

12 But if it will not make peace with thee, but will make war with thee, then shalt thou lay siege to it;

S'ils ne vous écoutent pas, s'ils prennent les armes, assiégez la ville.

13 and Yahweh thy God will deliver it into thy hand, —and thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;

Et si le Seigneur vous la livre, faites périr par le glaive tous les mâles qu'elle renferme,

14 but the women and the little ones and the cattle and all that shall be in the city—all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as thy prey, —so shalt thou eat the spoil of thine enemies, whom Yahweh thy God hath delivered unto thee.

Epargnez les femmes et le butin: emparez-vous de tout le bétail, de tout ce qui appartient à la ville, de toutes ses richesses, nourrissez-vous de toutes les provisions des ennemis que le Seigneur vous livre.

15 Thus, shalt thou do unto all the cities that are very far away from thee, —which are not of the cities of those nations.

Traitez de même les villes lointaines, étrangères aux nations

16 But of the cities of these peoples which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee as an inheritance, shalt thou not save alive, any breathing thing.

Que le Seigneur vous livre pour vous donner leur terre comme héritage. Ne prenez vivant aucun des hommes qui les habitent.

17 But thou shalt devote them to destruction—the Hittites and the Amorites the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, —as Yahweh thy God hath commanded thee:

Frappez d'anathème: Hettéen, Amorrhéen, Chananén, Phérézéen, Evéen, Jébuséen et Gergéséen, comme vous l'a prescrit le Seigneur votre Dieu;

18 lest they teach you to do, according to all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, —and so ye sin against Yahweh your God.

De peur qu'ils ne vous apprennent à pratiquer les abominations qu'ils commettent pour leurs dieux, et que vous ne deveniez coupables envers le Seigneur votre Dieu.

19 When thou shalt besiege a city for many days to fight against it, to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding against them an axe, when of them, thou mightest eat, them, there-fore shalt thou not cut down, —for, Is the tree of the field, a man, that it should enter, because of thee into the siege?

Si vous avez investi une ville plusieurs jours pour la combattre jusqu'à ce qu'elle succombe, ne détruisez pas ses arbres en y mettant la cognée, mangez-en les fruits sans les abattre. L'arbre des champs est-il un homme, pour entrer devant toi dans ton retranchement?

20 Nevertheless, the tree of which thou knowest that it is, not a tree yielding food, the same, mayest thou destroy, and cut down, —and so build up a siege-work against the city which is making war with thee, until thou hast subdued it.

Mais tu abattras les arbres que tu sais ne pas produire de fruits, tu en feras des palissades contre la ville qui te résiste, jusqu'à ce qu'elle te soit livrée.
