Amos 3

1 Hear ye this word, which Yahweh hath spoken, concerning you, ye sons of Israel, —concerning the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt saying: —

Écoutez cette parole que l'Éternel adresse à vous, enfants d'Israël, à toute la race que j'ai retirée du pays d'Egypte! Il dit:

2 Only you, have I acknowledged, of all the families of the ground, For this cause, will I visit upon you all your iniquities.

C'est vous seuls que j'ai voulu connaître de toutes les races de la terre, c'est pourquoi je vous ferai subir le châtiment de toutes vos transgressions.

3 Can two walk together, —except they meet?

Deux hommes arrivent-ils au même lieu, sans être convenus du rendez-vous?

4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when, prey, he hath none? Will a young lion utter his voice out of his den, when he hath made no capture?

Le lion rugit-il dans la forêt, sans qu'il y ait une proie pour lui? Le lionceau pousse-t-il sa voix de son repaire, sans avoir rien pris?

5 Will a bird fall upon a net to the earth, when there is no, snare, for it? Will a net rise from the ground, when it hath, captured nothing?

L'oiseau tombe-t-il dans le piège sur le sol, sans qu'un filet lui ait été tendu? Le trébuchet se relève-t-il de terre sans que rien y ait été pris?

6 Or a horn be blown in a city, and, a people, not tremble? Or calamity happen in a city, and, Yahweh, not have wrought with effect?

Sonne-t-on de la trompette dans une ville, sans que le peuple prenne l'alarme? Arrive-t-il une calamité dans une ville, sans que l'Éternel en soit l'auteur?

7 Surely My Lord Yahweh, will do, nothing, —except he have disclosed his secret unto his servants, the prophets!

Car le Seigneur, l'Éternel, ne fait rien sans avoir découvert son secret à ses serviteurs les prophètes.

8 A lion, hath roared, Who will not fear? My Lord Yahweh, hath spoken, Who can forbear to prophesy?

Le lion rugit, qui sera sans peur? Le Seigneur, l'Éternel parle, qui pourrait ne pas prophétiser?

9 Announce it over the palaces in Ashdod, and over the palaces in the land of Egypt, —and say ye—Gather yourselves together upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold ye—the great disorders in the midst thereof, and the oppressed within her.

Faites-vous entendre dans les palais d'Asdod, et dans les palais du pays d'Egypte, et dites: Rassemblez-vous sur les montagnes de Samarie, et voyez la confusion qui y est-et l'oppression qui s'y trouve!

10 Therefore do they not know how to do right, Declareth Yahweh, who are treasuring up violence and spoil in their palaces.

Et ils ne savent point faire le bien, dit l'Éternel, eux qui entassent les rapines et les violences dans leurs palais.

11 Therefore—Thus, saith My Lord, Yahweh, An adversary! Yea round about the land, —and he who shall bring down, from thee, thy strength, And spoiled shall be thy palaces.

Aussi, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: L'ennemi! et il cerne le pays, et il va t'ôter, faire crouler ta puissance, et tes palais seront pillés.

12 Thus, saith Yahweh, Just as a shepherd rescueth, out of the mouth of the lion, a couple of shankbones, or the tip of an ear, so, shall be rescued the sons of Israel, who are tarrying in Samaria, in the corner of the divan, and on the damask of the luxurious couch.

Ainsi parle l'Éternel: De même que le berger n'arrache de la gueule du lion que deux jambes [de la brebis] ou le bout d'une oreille, ainsi échapperont les enfants d'Israël qui dans Samarie reposent à l'angle du divan et sur les damas de leurs sofas.

13 Hear ye and bear witness, throughout the house of Jacob, —Commandeth My Lord, Yahweh, God of hosts:

Écoutez et soyez témoins contre la maison de Jacob, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées.

14 That, in the day I visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, then will I punish, concerning the altars of Bethel, So shall the horns of the altar, be broken off, and they shall fall to the ground;

Car au jour où je ferai subir à Israël le châtiment de ses crimes, je ferai tomber le châtiment sur les autels de Béthel, et les cornes de l'autel seront brisées et tomberont sur la terre;

15 And I will smite the winter house along with the summer house, —and the houses of ivory, shall be destroyed! and the great houses, shall disappear, Declareth Yahweh.

et j'abattrai la maison d'hiver avec la maison d'été, et les palais d'ivoire seront détruits, et les nombreux palais disparaîtront, dit l'Éternel.
