Acts 27
1 Now, when it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they proceeded to deliver Paul, and certain other prisoners, unto a centurion by name Julius, of an Augustan band.
Als unsere Abfahrt nach Italien beschlossen war, übergab man Paulus mit einigen anderen Gefangenen einem Hauptmann, namens Julius, der einer kaiserlichen Truppe angehörte.
2 And, going on board a ship of Adramittium, about to sail unto the places along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, there being with us, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica;
Wir gingen an Bord eines Schiffes aus Adramyttium, das die Häfen der Provinz Asien anlaufen wollte, und fuhren ab; der Mazedonier Aristarch aus Thessalonich begleitete uns. Sept. 57 n. Chr.
3 and, on the next day, we put into Zidon, —and Julius, treating Paul, kindly, gave him leave to go unto his friends and refresh himself;
Tags darauf legten wir in Sidon an, und Julius, der Paulus gütig behandelte, erlaubte ihm, seine Freunde zu besuchen und ihre liebevolle Pflege zu genießen.
4 and, from thence putting out to sea, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary;
Dann gingen wir wieder in See und fuhren an der Küste von Zypern vorbei, weil wir Gegenwind hatten.
5 and, sailing across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came down to Myra, a city of Lycia.
Als wir das Meer längs der Küste Ziliziens und Pamphyliens durchfahren hatten, kamen wir nach Myra in Lyzien.
6 And the centurion, there, finding a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, put us therein.
Dort fand der Hauptmann ein Schiff aus Alexandria, das auf der Fahrt nach Italien war, und ließ uns da an Bord gehen.
7 And, for a good many days sailing slowly, and getting with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us to get on, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone;
Mehrere Tage hindurch ging die Fahrt nur langsam vorwärts, und mit Mühe kamen wir in die Nähe von Knidus. Da uns der Gegenwind nicht in gerader Richtung weiterfahren ließ, steuerten wir an der Küste Kretas hin auf Salmone zu.
8 and, with difficulty coasting it, we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near to which was the city of Lasea.
Als wir mit Schwierigkeiten an der Küste vorbeigekommen waren, gelangten wir in eine Bucht, namens Schönhafen, nahe bei der Stadt Lasäa.
9 And, when a considerable time had passed, and sailing was already dangerous, because, even the Fast, had already gone by, Paul began to advise,
Unsere Reise dauerte nun schon ziemlich lange, und die Schiffahrt war bereits gefährlich, wie auch die Zeit des großen Fastens schon vorüber war. Darum warnte Paulus (vor der Weiterfahrt).
10 saying to them—Sirs! I perceive that, with damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and of the ship, but even of our persons, shall the voyage certainly be attended.
"Ihr Männer", sprach er, "ich sehe voraus, daß die Fahrt nicht nur für unser Leben Gefahr und großen Schaden bringen wird."
11 But, the centurion, by the master, and by the shipowner, was more persuaded than by the things which, by Paul, were spoken.
Der Hauptmann aber glaubte dem Steuermann und dem Schiffseigentümer mehr als dem, was Paulus sagte.
12 And, the harbour being, incommodious, to winter in, the more part, advised to put to sea from thence, if by any means they might be able to reach Phoenix, to winter, [which was] a harbour of Crete, looking north-east and south-east.
Weil überdies der Hafen zum Überwintern nicht geeignet war, so fand es die Mehrzahl geraten, weiterzufahren und zu versuchen, ob man nicht Phönix — einen Hafen an der Küste von Kreta, der gegen den Südwest- und Nordwestwind geschützt ist — erreichen könne, um da zu überwintern.
13 And, a south wind blowing softly, supposing they had secured their purpose, weighing anchor, they began to sail close in shore along Crete.
Da nur ein schwacher Südwind wehte, so glaubten sie, ihr Vorhaben sicher ausführen zu können. Sie lichteten die Anker und fuhren ganz dicht an der Küste von Kreta hin.
14 But, after no long time, there beat down from it a tempestuous wind, called Euraquilo, —
Bald darauf aber brauste von dem Hochgebirge der Insel ein furchtbarer Nordoststurm daher.
15 and, the ship being caught and we not being able to bring her head to the wind, we let her go, and were borne along.
Der riß das Schiff mit fort, und da es dem Wind nicht widerstehen konnte, so gaben wir es den Wogen preis und wurden dahingetrieben.
16 And, running under the lee, of some small island, called Cauda, we were able, with difficulty, to make ourselves masters of the boat, —
Als wir unter einer kleinen Insel, namens Klauda, hinliefen, gelang es uns nur mit größter Mühe, das Rettungsboot zu bergen.
17 which, hoisting up, they began to use, helps, under-girding the ship; and, fearing lest, on the sand-bank of Africa, they should run aground, lowering the gear, so, were they borne along.
Als sie es glücklich an Bord gezogen hatten, griffen sie zu einem Notbehelf und banden Taue um das Schiff. Aus Furcht, auf die Sandbänke der Syrte zu geraten, ließen sie das Geschirr nieder und wurden so vom Wind getrieben.
18 But, we being exceedingly tempest-tossed, on the next day, they began to throw [cargo] overboard;
Weil wir aber vom Sturm schwer zu leiden hatten, so warfen sie am nächsten Tag einen Teil der Ladung über Bord.
19 and, on the third day, with their own hands, the tackling of the ship, they cast away.
Am dritten Tag warfen sie mit eigener Hand das Schiffsgerät ins Wasser.
20 And, neither, sun nor stars, appearing for many days, and, no small tempest, lying upon us, in the end, all hope that we should be saved, began to be taken from us.
Mehrere Tage waren weder Sonne noch Sterne sichtbar, und der Sturm umtobte uns so heftig, daß uns endlich jeder Hoffnungsstrahl auf Rettung schwand.
21 But, when they had been, long without food, then, Paul, standing in the midst of them, said—Ye ought, indeed, Sir! yielding to me, not to have sailed away from Crete, to get this damage and loss. …
Da die Leute auf dem Schiff schon seit langer Zeit fast nichts gegessen hatten, trat Paulus mitten unter sie und sprach: "Ihr Männer, man hätte auf mich hören und nicht von Kreta weiterfahren sollen; dann wäre uns diese Gefahr und dieser Schade erspart geblieben.
22 And, now, I recommend you to be of good courage; for, loss of life, shall there be, none at all, from among you, —only the ship.
Doch nun ermuntere ich euch: Seid guten Mutes! Denn keiner von euch wird ums Leben kommen; nur das Schiff geht verloren.
23 For there stood by me this night, belonging unto the God whose I am, unto whom also I am doing divine service, a messenger,
Vergangene Nacht ist ein Bote des Gottes, dem ich angehöre und diene, zu mir getreten
24 saying—Be not afraid, Paul! for, before Caesar, must thou needs stand. And lo! God hath granted to thee as a favour, all them who are sailing with thee.
mit den Worten: 'Sei ohne Furcht, Paulus! Du mußt vor dem Kaiser erscheinen! Und sieh, Gott hat dir das Leben aller, die mit dir fahren, geschenkt.'
25 Wherefore, be of good courage, Sirs; for I believe in God—that, so, it shall be, according as it hath been told me.
Darum seid getrost, ihr Männer! Denn ich vertraue Gott, daß es so kommt, wie mir gesagt ist.
26 Upon a certain island, however, must we needs be wrecked.
Wir müssen aber an irgendeiner Insel stranden."
27 And, when, the fourteenth night, had come, and we were being driven to and fro in the Adriatic, about midnight, the sailors suspected that some country was, nearing, them;
So kam die vierzehnte Nacht, seit wir im Adriatischen Meer umhertrieben. Da, um Mitternacht, vermuteten die Matrosen, daß Land in der Nähe sei.
28 and, sounding, they found twenty fathoms, —and, going a little further, and again sounding, they found fifteen fathoms.
Sie warfen das Senkblei aus und fanden das Wasser zwanzig Klafter tief. Bald darauf maßen sie wieder und fanden fünfzehn Klafter.
29 And, fearing lest haply, on rocky places, we should be wrecked, out of stern, cast they four anchors, —and began praying that day might dawn.
Weil sie fürchteten, wir könnten irgendwo auf Klippen stoßen, warfen sie von dem Heck des Schiffes vier Anker aus und warteten voll Sehnsucht auf den Tagesanbruch.
30 But, when, the sailors, were seeking to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, by pretext, as though out of the prow they had been about to reach anchors,
Da die Matrosen aus dem Schiff zu entfliehen suchten und unter dem Vorgeben, sie wollten vom Vorderteil des Schiffes Anker werfen, das Rettungsboot ins Meer hinunterließen,
31 Paul said unto the centurion, and unto the soldiers—Except, these, abide in the ship, ye yourselves, cannot be saved!
sprach Paulus zu dem Hauptmann und den Soldaten: "Wenn diese Leute nicht im Schiff bleiben, so gibt's für euch keine Rettung."
32 Then, the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
Da kappten die Soldaten die Taue, womit das Boot befestigt war, und ließen es ins Meer fallen. In der Zeit vor Tagesanbruch redete Paulus allen zu,
33 And, until day was about to dawn, Paul continued to beseech one and all to take some food, saying—This day is, the fourteenth day, that, suspense, fasting, ye are completing, —having helped yourselves, to nothing.
sie möchten Nahrung zu sich nehmen. "Heute sind es vierzehn Tage", sprach er, "daß ihr fortwährend, ohne zu essen, in Angst schwebt und nichts Rechtes zu euch genommen habt.
34 Wherefore, I beseech you to take some food, —for, this, lays a foundation for your safety; for, of no one of you, shall a hair of the head perish.
Darum rate ich euch dringend, jetzt etwas zu genießen. Das ist mit zu eurer Rettung nötig. Denn keinem von euch wird ein Haar von seinem Haupt fallen."
35 And, having said these things, and taken a loaf, he gave thanks unto God before all, and, breaking it, began to eat.
Nach diesen Worten nahm er Brot, dankte Gott in aller Gegenwart, brach es und begann zu essen.
36 And, all becoming, of good cheer, they also, helped themselves to food.
Da wurden sie alle gutes Mutes und aßen auch.
37 Now we were, in the ship, in all, about seventy-six souls.
Wir waren im ganzen 276 Menschen an Bord.
38 And, when they were satisfied with food, they began lightening the ship, casting out the wheat into the sea.
Als sie sich satt gegessen hatten, warfen sie die Getreideladung ins Meer, um das Schiff zu erleichtern.
39 And, when day came, they could not recognise, the land; but perceived, a certain bay, having a beach, —upon which they were minded, if they could, safely to bring the ship.
Bei Tagesanbruch konnte man das Land nicht erkennen. Man bemerkte aber eine Bucht mit einem flachen Ufer und beschloß, das Schiff womöglich dort auf den Strand laufen zu lassen.
40 And, casting off the anchors, they let them go into the sea, —at the same time, loosening the lashings of the rudders, and, hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.
So kappte man die Ankertaue und ließ die Anker im Meer. Zugleich löste man die Taue, mit denen die beiden Steuerruder (während des Treibens) festgebunden waren. Dann hißten sie das Focksegel gegen den Wind und steuerten auf den Strand zu.
41 But, falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and, the foreship sticking fast, remained immoveable, while, the stern, began to break up, from the violence [of the waves].
Dabei gerieten sie aber auf eine Sandbank und ließen nun das Schiff auflaufen. Doch nur das Vorderteil stemmte sich fest und blieb unbeweglich, während das Heck des Schiffes durch den Anprall der Wogen mehr und mehr zertrümmert wurde.
42 Now, the soldiers counsel, turned out to be, that they should kill, the prisoners, lest any one should swim out and escape;
Die Soldaten waren willens, die Gefangenen zu töten, damit keiner von ihnen ans Land schwimmen und entfliehen könne.
43 but, the centurion, being minded to bring Paul safely through, hindered them of their purpose, and ordered such as were able to swim, to cast themselves overboard and, get first to the land, —
Der Hauptmann aber wollte Paulus retten und verhinderte das Vorhaben. Er befahl, alle, die schwimmen könnten, sollten zuerst über Bord springen, um ans Land zu kommen.
44 and, the rest, some, on planks, and, some, on other things from the ship, …and, so, it came to pass, that, all, were brought safely through, on to the land.
Die anderen sollten folgen, teils auf Planken, teils auf anderen Stücken von dem Wrack des Schiffes. So gelang es allen, sich ans Land zu retten.
