Acts 24
1 And, after five days, came down the High-priest Ananias, with certain Elders and a certain orator Tertullus, and they informed the governor against Paul.
Cinq jours après arriva le grand-prêtre Hananias, accompagné de quelques Anciens et d'un avocat, un certain Tertullus; ils vinrent dénoncer Paul au procurateur.
2 And, when he was called, Tertullus began to make accusation, saying—Seeing that, great peace, we are obtaining through thee, and that, reforms, are being brought about for this nation through thy forethought,
On le fit appeler, et Tertullus commença son accusation en ces termes:
3 both in all ways and in all places, are we accepting it, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.
«Excellent Félix, Nous jouissons d'une paix profonde, grâce à toi, grâce aussi, aux réformes faites au sein de ce peuple, et dues à ta sollicitude en tout et partout; nous en éprouvons une bien vive reconnaissance.
4 But, lest I too long detain thee, I beseech thee to hear us concisely in thy considerateness.
Mais je ne veux pas te retenir trop longtemps; je te prie seulement de nous écouter un instant avec ta bonté habituelle.
5 For, finding this man a pest, and moving sedition with all the Jews that are throughout the inhabited earth, a leader also of the sect of the Nazarenes, —
Cet homme est une peste; il excite des séditions parmi les Juifs dans le monde entier; il est chef de l'hérésie des Nazaréens;
6 who also attempted to desecrate even, the temple, whom we also seized,
nous l'avons trouvé essayant de profaner le Temple; alors nous l'avons arrêté.
(Nous avons voulu le juger selon notre propre Loi: mais le tribun Lysias, étant survenu, l'a arraché de nos mains avec une grande violence, en ordonnant à ses accusateurs de venir devant toi.)
8 from whom thou shall be able, thyself, by making examination concerning all these things, to ascertain the things of which, we, are accusing him.
Tu peux, en l'interrogeant sur ces faits, apprendre de sa bouche tout ce dont nous l'accusons.»
9 Moreover, the Jews also were joining in the attack, saying that, these things, were, so.
Les Juifs s'associèrent à ces paroles et déclarèrent qu'elles étaient exactes.
10 And Paul answered, when the governor had motioned him to be speaking, —Well knowing thee to have been, for many years, judge unto his nation, cheerfully, as to the things concerning myself, do I make defence;
Sur un signe du procurateur, Paul prit ensuite la parole: «Voilà plusieurs années que tu administres ce peuple, je le sais; aussi est-ce avec une grande confiance que je viens me défendre moi-même.
11 seeing thou art able to ascertain, that there are, not more, than twelve days, since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, —
Tu peux constater: — qu'il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis arrivé à Jérusalem pour y adorer;
12 and neither, in the temple, found they me, with any one, disputing, or causing, a halt, of the multitude, either in the synagogues or throughout the city, —
- que personne ne m'a vu discuter avec quelqu'un dans le Temple; — que je n'y ai point fait d'attroupement; — pas davantage dans les synagogues ou dans la ville;
13 neither can they make good the things concerning which they are, now, accusing me.
— et qu'ils ne peuvent pas prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.»
14 But I confess, this, unto thee, —That, according to the Way which they call a Sect, so, I am rendering divine service unto my father’s God, believing in all the things which, throughout the law, and those which, in the prophets, are written:
«Mais voici ce que je t'avoue: Il y a une doctrine qu'ils appellent une hérésie, et c'est en la suivant: — que j'adore le Dieu de mes pères; — que je crois à tout ce qui est écrit dans da Loi et les Prophètes»;
15 Having, hope, towards God, which, even these themselves, do entertain—that, a resurrection, there shall certainly be, both of righteous and of unrighteous:
— que j'ai en Dieu l'espérance (et eux aussi ils la partagent) qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des injustes.
16 herein, even I, myself, am studying to have, an unoffending conscience, towards God and men, continually.
Voilà pourquoi je m'efforce moi-même d'avoir en tout temps une conscience irréprochable devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
17 Now, after many years, intending to do, alms, unto my nation, I arrived, —also [to present] offerings; among which they found me, purified in the temple, not with a multitude, nor with tumult;
«Après une absence de plusieurs années, je suis venu faire à mon peuple des aumônes, lui porter des offrandes.
18 but certain Jews from Asia [caused it], —
C'est alors que certains Juifs d'Asie m'ont trouvé dans le Temple, occupé à des purifications, sans le moindre attroupement, sans le moindre bruit.
19 who ought, before thee, to have presented themselves, and to have been laying accusation, if, anything, they might have had against me: —
Ils auraient dû se présenter devant toi et m'accuser, s'ils avaient un reproche à me faire;
20 Or, let, these themselves, say what wrong they found, when I stood before the High-council, —
ou bien, que ceux ici présents disent de quel méfait ils m'ont trouvé coupable quand j'ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin.
21 unless concerning this one voice, wherewith I cried aloud among them, as I stood—Concerning the raising of the dead, am, I, to be judged, this day, by you.
Serait-ce de leur avoir dit ces mots, les seuls que je leur ai adressés: C'est la question de la résurrection des morts qui me fait juger aujourd'hui par vous?»
22 And Felix deferred them, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, —saying—As soon as, Lysias the captain, hath come down, I will give judgment as to your affairs, —
Félix, qui savait assez exactement de quelle doctrine il s'agissait, ajourna la cause, en disant: «Quand Lysias, le tribun, sera ici, j'étudierai votre affaire.»
23 giving orders unto the centurion, that he should be kept, and have a measure of liberty, and to be hindering, none, of his own from waiting upon him.
En attendant, il ordonna au centurion de garder Paul, mais de le traiter avec douceur et de n'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services.
24 And, after certain days, Felix having arrived, with Drusilla his own wife, who was, a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith, respecting Christ Jesus.
Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille, qui était juive. Il fit appeler Paul et l'entendit parler de la foi au Christ Jésus;
25 And, as he was reasoning of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix, becoming greatly afraid, answered—For the present, be going thy way, and, when I find an opportunity, I will send for thee, —
et comme il traitait de la justice, de la tempérance, du jugement à venir, Félix eut peur: «En voilà assez pour le moment, dit-il, je te ferai rappeler à la première occasion.»
26 at the same time, also hoping that, money, would be given him by Paul; wherefore also, the more frequently sending for him, he used to converse with him.
En outre, il espérait que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent, et, dans ce but, il le faisait venir assez souvent et s'entretenait avec lui.
27 When, however, two years, were completed, Felix, was succeeded, by Porcius Festus, and Felix, wishing to gain favour with the Jews, left Paul bound.
Deux années se passèrent ainsi; Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus, et comme il voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison.
