Acts 18
1 After these things, withdrawing from Athens, he came unto Corinth;
Ensuite Paul partit d'Athènes et se rendit à Corinthe.
2 and, finding a certain Jew, by name Aquila, of Pontus by birth, —lately come from Italy, and Priscilla his wife, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to be leaving Rome, he came unto them,
Il y trouva un Juif nommé Aquilas, originaire du Pont, fraîchement arrivé d'Italie avec Priscille, sa femme, parce que Claude avait enjoint à tous les Juifs de quitter Rome. Paul alla les voir,
3 and, because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought, for they were tent-makers by their trade.
et, comme il était du même métier, il demeura chez eux et y travailla: ils étaient faiseurs de tentes.
4 And he began reasoning in the synagogue every sabbath, and was persuading both Jews and Greeks.
Tous les jours de sabbat, il discourait dans la synagogue, et persuadait Juifs et Grecs.
5 When, however, both Silas and Timothy had come down from Macedonia, Paul began to be urged on in the word, bearing full witness unto the Jews that, Jesus, was, the Christ.
Quand Silas et Timothée arrivèrent de Macédoine, Paul était tout entier à la Parole, ne cessant d'enseigner aux Juifs, que Jésus était le Messie.
6 But, as they began opposing and defaming, shaking out his garments, he said unto them—Your blood, be upon your own head! Pure, am, I: henceforth, unto the nations, will I go.
Mais comme ils s'opposaient et se portaient à des injures, il secoua ses vêtements, et leur dit: «Que votre sang retombe sur votre tête! pour moi, j'en suis net; désormais j'irai vers les Gentils.»
7 And, removing from thence, he came into the house of a certain man by name Titius Justus, who worshipped God, whose house was adjoining unto the synagogue.
Puis il sortit de ce lieu et se retira chez un nommé Justus, homme craignant Dieu, dont la maison était contiguë à la synagogue.
8 But, Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, with all his house. And, many of the Corinthians, hearing, were believing, and being immersed.
Crispus, président de la synagogue, crut au Seigneur avec toute sa famille. Un grand nombre aussi de Corinthiens embrassèrent la foi en entendant Paul, et se firent baptiser.
9 And the Lord said by night, through means of a vision, unto Paul—Be not afraid! but be speaking, —and do not hold thy peace;
Le Seigneur dit à Paul, la nuit, dans une vision: «Ne crains point, mais parle; ne garde point le silence,
10 Inasmuch as, I, am with thee, and, no one, shall set upon thee to harm thee; inasmuch as I have much people in this city.
car je suis avec toi, et personne ne t'attaquera de manière à te maltraiter. J'ai un grand peuple dans cette ville.»
11 And he remained a year and six months, teaching among them the word of God.
Et Paul résida un an et demi à Corinthe, y enseignant la parole de Dieu.
12 But, when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews, with one accord, set upon Paul, and led him unto the judgment-seat,
Un jour, les Juifs se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui, et le menèrent devant le tribunal de Gallion qui était alors proconsul d'Achaïe.
13 saying—Contrary to the law, is this one seducing men to be worshipping God.
«Cet homme, dirent-ils, persuade aux gens d'adorer Dieu d'une manière contraire à la Loi.»
14 But, as Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews—If, indeed, it had been some wrong or wicked recklessness, O Jews, with reason, in that case, should I have been bearing with you.
Comme Paul se disposait à parler, Gallion dit aux Juifs: «S'il s'agissait de quelque délit ou de quelque acte frauduleux, je vous entendrais patiemment, comme de raison;
15 If, however, they are questions concerning discourse, and names, and law, that which ye have, ye shall see to it, yourselves; A judge of these things, I, am not disposed to be.
mais puisqu'il s'agit de disputes sur une parole, sur des noms propres, et sur votre Loi, vous y aviserez vous-mêmes: je ne veux pas être juge de ces choses-là.»
16 And he drove them from the judgment-seat.
Et il les fit sortir du tribunal.
17 But they all, laying hold of Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, began to strike him before the judgment-seat; and, for none of these things, did Gallio care.
Alors tous ayant saisi Sosthènes, président de la synagogue, le battirent devant le tribunal, sans que Gallion s'en mît en peine.
18 Paul, however, still further abiding a good many days with the brethren, bidding them adieu, set sail for Syria; and, with him, Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchreae, for he had a vow.
Après être demeuré assez longtemps encore à Corinthe, Paul fit ses adieux aux frères, et s'embarqua pour la Syrie avec Priscille et Aquilas; il se fit auparavant raser la tête à Cenchrées à cause d’un voeu qu'il avait fait.
19 And they came down to Ephesus; and, as for them, he left them there, —but, himself entering into the synagogue, he reasoned with the Jews.
Ils arrivèrent à Éphèse, et Paul y laissa ses compagnons. Pour lui, étant entré dans la synagogue, il s'entretint avec les Juifs.
20 And, when they requested him for a longer time to abide, he consented not;
Ceux-ci le prièrent de prolonger son séjour parmi eux, mais il n'y consentit point,
21 but, bidding them adieu, and saying—Again, will I return unto you, God willing, he sailed away from Ephesus;
et leur fit ses adieux en disant: «Il faut absolument que je célèbre la fête prochaine à Jérusalem, mais je reviendrai vers vous, s'il plaît à Dieu; » et il partit d'Éphèse.
22 and, putting in at Caesarea, going up and saluting the assembly, went down unto Antioch;
Etant débarqué à Césarée, il monta à Jérusalem, et, après avoir salué l'église, il se rendit à Antioche.
23 and, spending some time, he went forth, passing through, in order, the country of Galatia and Phrygia, confirming all the disciples.
Lorsqu'il y eut passé quelque temps, il partit et parcourut successivement la Galatie et la Phrygie, affermissant tous les disciples.
24 But, a certain Jew, Apollos by name, an Alexandrian by birth, a learned man, came down to Ephesus, being, mighty, in the Scriptures.
Or un Juif nommé Apollos, originaire d'Alexandrie, homme éloquent et très versé dans les Écritures, était venu à Éphèse.
25 The same, had been orally taught the way of the Lord, and, being fervent in his spirit, began speaking and teaching accurately, the things concerning Jesus, —properly knowing, only the immersion of John.
Il était instruit de la voie du Seigneur, et, dans la ferveur de son âme, il expliquait et enseignait avec exactitude ce qui se rapporte à Jésus, quoiqu'il n'eût connaissance que du baptême de Jean.
26 The same, also began speaking boldly in the synagogue; and Priscilla and Aquila, hearing him, took him unto them, and, more accurately, expounded unto him the way of God.
Il se mit à parler hardiment dans la synagogue: Aquilas et Priscille l'ayant entendu, le prirent avec eux, et lui exposèrent plus exactement la voie de Dieu.
27 And, he being minded to pass through into Achaia, the brethren urgently wrote unto the disciples to welcome him, —who, arriving, was very useful unto them who had believed, with his gift;
Comme il voulait aller en Achaïe, les frères écrivirent aux disciples pour les engager à le recevoir. Quand il y fut arrivé, il fut d'un grand secours, par ses talents, à ceux qui avaient embrassé la foi,
28 for, with great force, began he confuting the Jews, publicly, shewing by the Scriptures that Jesus was, the Christ.
car il réfutait vigoureusement les Juifs, en public, démontrant par les Écritures que Jésus est le Messie.
