2 Chronicles 24

1 Seven years old, was Joash when he began to reign, and, forty years, reigned he, in Jerusalem, —and, the name of his mother, was Zibiah, of Beersheba.

Joas était âgé de sept ans quand il commença à régner, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère avait nom Tsibia, [et] elle était de Béer-sebah.

2 And Joash did that which was right, in the eyes of Yahweh, -all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

Or Joas fit ce qui est droit devant l'Eternel, durant tout le temps de Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur.

3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives, —and he begat sons and daughters.

Et Jéhojadah lui donna deux femmes, desquelles il eut des fils et des filles.

4 And it came to pass, after this, that it was near the heart of Joash to renew the house of Yahweh.

Après cela Joas prit à cœur de renouveler la maison de l'Eternel.

5 So he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said unto them—Go ye out unto the cities of Judah, and gather out of all Israel silver to repair the house of your God, year by year, and, ye, shall hasten the matter, —but the Levites hastened it not.

Et il assembla les Sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et leur dit: Allez par les villes de Juda, et amassez de l'argent de tout Israël, pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu, d'année en année, et hâtez cette affaire; mais les Lévites ne la hâtèrent point.

6 Then the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites, to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the convocation of Israel, —for the tent of testimony?

Et le Roi appela Jéhojadah le principal [Sacrificateur], et lui dit: Pourquoi n'as-tu pas fait en sorte que les Lévites apportassent de Juda, et de Jérusalem, et de tout Israël, le tribut ordonné par Moïse serviteur de l'Eternel, pour le Tabernacle du Témoignage?

7 For, as for Athaliah the Lawless, her sons, brake up the House of God, —moreover, all the hallowed things of the house of Yahweh, offered they unto the Baalim.

Car la méchante Hathalie [et] ses enfants avaient dépouillé la maison de Dieu, et ils avaient même approprié aux Bahalins toutes les choses consacrées à la maison de l'Eternel.

8 So the king bade [them], and they made a certain chest, —and set it in the gate of the house of Yahweh, outside.

C'est pourquoi le Roi commanda qu'on fit un coffre, et qu'on le mît à la porte de la maison de l'Eternel en dehors.

9 And they made a proclamation, throughout Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in unto Yahweh the tribute of Moses the servant of God, laid upon Israel in the desert.

Puis on publia dans Juda et dans Jérusalem, qu'on apportât à l'Eternel l'impôt que Moïse serviteur de Dieu avait mis dans le désert sur Israël.

10 And all the rulers and all the people rejoiced, —and brought in and cast into the chest, until they had finished.

Et tous les principaux et tout le peuple s'en réjouirent; et ils apportèrent [l'argent], et le jetèrent dans le coffre, jusqu'à ce qu'on eût achevé [de réparer le Temple].

11 And it came to pass, what time the chest was brought into the office of the king by the hand of the Levites, and when they had seen that abundant was the silver, that the scribe of the king came in, and the officer of the chief priest, and they emptied the chest, and bare it, and put it back in its place, —thus, they did, day by day, and collected silver, in abundance;

Or quand les Lévites emportaient le coffre suivant l'ordre du Roi, ce qu'on faisait dès qu'on voyait qu'il y avait beaucoup d'argent; le Secrétaire du Roi, et le Commis du principal Sacrificateur venaient, et vidaient le coffre, puis ils le reportaient, et le remettaient en sa place Ils faisaient ainsi tous les jours; et on amassa quantité d'argent.

12 and the king and Jehoiada gave it unto such as were doing the work of labouring upon the house of Yahweh, and they were hiring masons and carpenters, to renew the house of Yahweh, —moreover also, such as were fashioners of iron and bronze, to repair the house of Yahweh.

Et le Roi et Jéhojadah le distribuaient à ceux qui avaient la charge de l'ouvrage du service de la maison de l'Eternel, lesquels louaient des tailleurs de pierres et des charpentiers pour refaire la maison de l'Eternel, et des ouvriers travaillant en fer et en airain pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel.

13 So the doers of the work wrought, and the work of restoration went forward, in their hand, —and they caused the house of God to stand forth according to its due proportions, and made it strong.

Ceux donc qui avaient la charge de l'ouvrage travaillèrent, et il fut entièrement achevé par leur moyen, de sorte qu'ils rétablirent la maison de Dieu en son état, et l'affermirent.

14 And, when they had finished, they brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the silver, and he made it into utensils for the house of Yahweh, utensils of attendance, and bowls and spoons, even utensils of gold and silver. Then were they offering ascending-sacrifices in the house of Yahweh, continually, all the days of Jehoiada.

Et dès qu'ils eurent achevé, ils apportèrent devant le Roi et devant Jéhojadah le reste de l'argent, dont il fit faire des ustensiles pour la maison de l'Eternel; [savoir] des ustensiles pour le service et pour les oblations, et des tasses et d'autres ustensiles d'or et d'argent; et ils offrirent continuellement des holocaustes dans la maison de l'Eternel, durant tout le temps de Jéhojadah.

15 But Jehoiada waxed old and became satisfied with days, and died, —a hundred and thirty years old, when he died.

Or Jéhojadah étant devenu vieux et rassasié de jours, mourut. Il était âgé de cent trente ans quand il mourut.

16 And they buried him in the city of David, with the kings, —because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and his house.

Et on l'ensevelit en la Cité de David avec les Rois, parce qu'il avait fait du bien en Israël, envers Dieu, et envers sa maison.

17 Now, after the death of Jehoiada, came the rulers of Judah, and bowed themselves down unto the king, —then, hearkened the king unto them.

Mais après que Jéhojadah fut mort, les principaux de Juda vinrent, et se prosternèrent devant le Roi; [et] alors le Roi les écouta.

18 And they forsook the house of Yahweh, God of their fathers, and served the Sacred Stems, and the images, —so there was wrath against Judah and Jerusalem, for this their guilt.

Et ils abandonnèrent la maison de l'Eternel le Dieu de leurs pères, et [s'attachèrent] au service des bocages, et des faux dieux; c'est pourquoi la colère de [l'Eternel s'alluma] contre Juda et contre Jérusalem, parce qu'ils s'étaient rendus coupables en cela.

19 And he sent among them prophets, to bring them back unto Yahweh, —and they testified against them, but they would not give ear.

Et quoiqu'il leur envoyât des Prophètes pour les faire retourner à l'Eternel, et que [ces Prophètes] les [en] sommassent, toutefois ils ne voulurent point écouter.

20 And, the spirit of God, clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he took his stand above the people, —and said unto them, Thus, saith God, Wherefore are, ye, transgressing the commandments of Yahweh, so that ye cannot prosper, because ye have forsaken Yahweh, therefore hath he forsaken you.

Et même l'Esprit de Dieu revêtit Zacharie fils de Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur, de sorte qu'il se tint debout au dessus du peuple, et leur dit: Dieu a dit ainsi: Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements de l'Eternel? Car vous ne prospérerez point; [et] parce que vous avez abandonné l'Eternel, il vous abandonnera aussi.

21 So they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones, by the commandment of the king, —in the court of the house of Yahweh.

Et ils se liguèrent contre lui, et l'assommèrent de pierres, par le commandement du Roi, au parvis de la maison de l'Eternel;

22 Thus Joash the king, remembered not, the lovingkindness which Jehoiada his father had done for him, but slew his son, —and, as he died, he said, Yahweh see and require!

De sorte que le Roi Joas ne se souvint point de la gratuité dont Jéhojadah, père de Zacharie, avait usé envers lui; mais il tua son fils, qui en mourant dit: Que l'Eternel le voie, et le redemande!

23 And it came to pass, when the year had gone round, that the force of Syria came up against him, and they entered Judah, and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the rulers of the people, from among the people, —and, all the spoil of them, sent they unto the king of Damascus.

Et il arriva qu'au bout d'un an l'armée de Syrie monta contre lui, et vint en Juda et à Jérusalem, et [les Syriens] détruisirent d'entre le peuple tous les principaux du peuple, et envoyèrent au Roi à Damas tout leur butin.

24 Although, with a comparatively few men, came the force of Syria, yet, Yahweh, delivered into their hand an exceeding large force, —because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers, —and, upon Joash, executed they judgments.

Et quoique l'armée venue de Syrie fût peu nombreuse, l'Eternel livra pourtant entre leurs mains une très-grosse armée, parce qu'ils avaient abandonné l'Eternel Dieu de leurs pères. Ainsi [les Syriens] mirent Joas pour un exemple de jugement.

25 And, when they had departed from him, for they left him with sore diseases, his own servants conspired against him, for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him upon his bed, and he died, —and, though they buried him in the city of David, yet did they not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings.

Et quand ils se furent retirés d'avec lui, parce qu'ils l'avaient laissé dans de grandes langueurs, ses serviteurs conjurèrent contre lui, à cause du meurtre des fils de Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur, et le tuèrent sur son lit; et ainsi il mourut, et on l'ensevelit en la Cité de David, mais on ne l'ensevelit point aux sépulcres des Rois.

26 Now, these, are they that conspired against him, —Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

Et ce sont ici ceux qui conjurèrent contre lui, Zabad, fils de Simhat femme Hammonite, et Jéhozabad fils de Simrith femme Moabite.

27 But, as for his sons, and the greatness of the oracle on him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo! there they are written, in the commentary of the Book of Kings, —and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

Or quant à ses enfants, et à la grande levée de deniers qui avait été faite pour lui, et au rétablissement de la maison de Dieu, voilà, ces choses sont écrites dans les Mémoires du Livre des Rois; et Amatsia son fils régna en sa place.
