1 Samuel 6
1 And it came to pass, that the ark of Yahweh was in the country of the Philistines, seven months.
Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu ở trong đất Phi-li-tin đã được bảy tháng.
2 Then called the Philistines for the priests and for the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Yahweh? Let us know, wherewith we shall send it to its own place.
Người Phi-li-tin mời các thầy tế lễ và thầy bói của mình đến, hỏi: “Xin cho chúng tôi biết cách thức trả Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu về.”
3 And they said—If ye are going to send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away, empty, but ye must, surely return, to him, a guilt-offering, —then, shall ye be healed, and it shall be known to you, wherefore his hand would not turn away from you.
Họ đáp: “Đừng trả Hòm về không. Phải gửi theo Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên lễ vật chuộc lỗi. Lúc đó mọi người sẽ được khỏi bệnh, và sẽ biết vì sao Ngài đã ra tay trừng trị chúng ta.”
4 And they said—What shall be the guilt-offering, that we shall return to him? And they said—By the number of the lords of the Philistines, five tumours of gold, and five mice of gold, —for, one plague, was on you all, and on your lords.
Họ hỏi: “Lễ vật chuộc lỗi gồm những gì?” Đáp: “Năm hình bướu trĩ bằng vàng và năm con chuột bằng vàng theo số các nhà lãnh đạo Phi-li-tin, vì bệnh dịch này gây tai hại cho toàn dân và các nhà lãnh đạo.
5 Wherefore ye shall make likenesses of your turnouts, and likenesses of your mice that are laying waste the land, and shall, give unto the, God of Israel, glory, —Peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your god, and from off your land.
Vậy, phải làm hình bướu trĩ nổi sưng lên và hình của chuột phá hại đất đai làm lễ vật. Phải tôn vinh Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, chắc Ngài sẽ nới tay cho dân ta, thần thánh và đất đai ta.
6 Wherefore, then, should ye make your heart dull, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh made their heart dull! When he had done his great doings upon them, did they not let them go, and they departed?
Đừng ương ngạnh và phản loạn như Pha-ra-ôn và người Ai Cập. Khi Đức Chúa Trời đã ra tay hình phạt, họ phải để cho người Ít-ra-ên ra đi.
7 Now, therefore, take and get ready, one new waggon, and two milch kine, whereon hath never come yoke, —then shall ye fasten the kine in the waggon, and withdraw their calves from them, into the shed;
Bây giờ phải đóng một cỗ xe mới, dùng hai con bò sữa chưa hề mang ách để kéo xe, nhưng nhớ giữ mấy con bê, con của hai con bò sữa ở nhà.
8 and ye shall take the ark of Yahweh, and place it in the waggon, also, the jewels of gold which ye send back to him as a guilt-offering, shall ye put into a coffer, at the side thereof, —so shall ye let it go, and it shall depart.
Đặt Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu trên xe, bên cạnh để một cái hộp đựng các hình vàng làm lễ vật chuộc lỗi, rồi thả cho bò kéo xe đi.
9 Then shall ye look—if, by the way of its own boundary, it goeth up to Beth-shemesh, he, it was who caused us this great affliction, —but, if not, then shall we know that it was not, his hand, that smote us, a chance, it was, that befell us.
Nhớ quan sát hướng xe đi. Nếu đi về biên giới theo hướng Bết-sê-mết, các ông sẽ biết đó là Đức Chúa Trời đã giáng tai họa. Nếu xe đi hướng khác, thì không phải Ngài đã ra tay, nhưng tai họa chỉ ngẫu nhiên xảy đến.”
10 The men, therefore, did so, and took two milch kine, and fastened them in the waggon, —but, their calves, shut they up in the shed.
Người Phi-li-tin theo lời chỉ dẫn, bắt hai con bò sữa thắng vào xe, và nhốt mấy con bê lại.
11 And they put the ark of Yahweh, into the waggon, —also the coffer, with the mice of gold, and the likenesses of their tumours.
Họ đặt Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu cùng cái hộp đựng chuột vàng và hình bướu trĩ lên xe.
12 And the kine went straight along the road, on the way to Beth-shemesh, yea, along the main highway, they went, lowing as they went, turning not aside, to the right hand or to the left. And, the lords of the Philistines, went along after them, as far as the bounds of Beth-shemesh.
Hai con bò theo đường cái đi thẳng hướng Bết-sê-mết, không quay qua quay lại nhưng vừa đi vừa rống. Các lãnh đạo Phi-li-tin theo tiễn cho đến biên giới Bết-sê-mết.
13 Now, they of Beth-shemesh, were reaping their wheat-harvest in the vale, —so they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to meet it.
Người Bết-sê-mết đang gặt lúa trong thung lũng, thấy Hòm Giao Ước đến, lòng hớn hở vui mừng.
14 And, the waggon, entered into the field of Joshua, a man of Beth-shemesh, and stood still, there, where also, was a great stone, —so they clave into pieces the planks of the waggon, and, the kine, offered they up as an ascending-sacrifice, unto Yahweh.
Chiếc xe vào đến đồng ruộng của Giô-suê rồi dừng lại bên cạnh một tảng đá lớn. Người Bết-sê-mết chẻ xe làm củi, giết bò làm lễ thiêu dâng lên Chúa Hằng Hữu.
15 And, the Levites, took down the ark of Yahweh, and the coffer that was with it, wherein were the jewels of gold, and put them upon the great stone, —and, the men of Beth-shemesh, caused to go up ascending-offerings and offered sacrifices, that day, unto Yahweh.
Người Lê-vi đặt Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu và cái hộp đựng các lễ vật bằng vàng trên tảng đá. Hôm ấy người Bết-sê-mết còn dâng nhiều lễ thiêu và lễ vật khác lên Chúa Hằng Hữu.
16 And, the five lords of the Philistines, saw it, —and returned unto Ekron, the same day.
Năm lãnh tụ Phi-li-tin chứng kiến mọi việc xong, cùng nhau trở về Éc-rôn nội trong hôm ấy.
17 Now, these, are the golden boils which, the Philistines returned as a guilt-offering unto Yahweh, —For Ashdod, one, for Gaza, one, for Ashkelon, one, for Gath, one, for Ekron, one;
Năm hình bướu trĩ người Phi-li-tin dâng lên Chúa Hằng Hữu làm lễ vật chuộc lỗi cho năm thành Ách-đốt, Ga-xa, Ách-ca-lôn, Gát, và Éc-rôn.
18 And the golden mice, by the number of all the cities of the Philistines, pertaining to the five lords, both fortified cities, and country villages, —yea, even the great meadow whereon they rested the ark of Yahweh, until this day, is in the field-land of Joshua, the man of Beth-shemesh.
Số hình chuột vàng cũng vậy, theo số các thành Phi-li-tin thuộc quyền năm lãnh tụ, kể cả các thành có hào lũy vững chắc và các thôn ấp. Tảng đá lớn trên đó người ta đặt Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa đến nay vẫn còn trong cánh đồng của Giô-suê, người Bết-sê-mết.
19 And, when he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of Yahweh, yea smote of the people seventy men [and] fifty thousand men, the people mourned, for that Yahweh had smitten the people with a great smiting.
Nhưng Chúa Hằng Hữu đánh giết bảy mươi người Bết-sê-mết vì họ tò mò nhìn vào trong Hòm Giao Ước.
20 Then said the men of Beth-shemesh, Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? and, unto whom, shall he go up from us?
Người ta khóc than vì có nhiều người chết và họ than thở: “Ai đứng được trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời Hằng Hữu thánh khiết? Chúng ta sẽ rời Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa sẽ đi đâu?”
21 And they sent messengers unto the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, —The Philistines have returned the ark of Yahweh, come down, fetch it up unto you.
Rồi họ sai người đến Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim, nói với dân ở đó: “Người Phi-li-tin đã trả Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa về đây. Xin xuống đem Hòm về!”
