1 Samuel 5

1 Now, the Philistines, having taken the ark of God, —brought it in from Eben-ezer, unto Ashdod.

Et les Philistins prirent l'arche de Dieu, et ils la portèrent d'Abenézer à Azot.

2 And, when the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, —and placed it by the side of Dagon.

Et les Philistins prirent l'arche du Seigneur, et ils la portèrent dans le temple de Dagon, et ils la posèrent auprès de Dagon.

3 And, when they of Ashdod rose early on the morrow and entered into the house of Dagon, they looked and lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh, —so they took Dagon and restored him to his place.

Et les hommes d'Azot s'étant levés de grand matin, entrèrent dans le temple de Dagon, et ils virent Dagon renversé, la face contre terre, devant l'arche de Dieu; ils relevèrent Dagon et le remirent à sa place; puis, la main du Seigneur s'appesantit sur les hommes d'Azot; elle les tourmenta, elle les frappa à l'anus, tant ceux de la ville que ceux de son territoire.

4 And, when they rose up early in the morning of the morrow, lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh—and, the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, had been cut off against the threshold, only, Dagon himself, was left to him.

Lorsqu'ils se levèrent de bonne heure, le jour suivant, ils virent Dagon renversé, la face contre terre, devant l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur; la tête de Dagon et ses mains avaient été enlevées jusqu'à la façade d'Amapheth, et ses deux poignets gisaient sur le portique. Le torse seul de Dagon était resté.

5 For this cause, do not the priests of Dagon, nor any that enter into the house of Dagon, tread upon the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, —until this day.

A cause de cela, encore de nos jours, ni les prêtres de Dagon, ni ceux qui entrent dans le temple, ne marchent sur le seuil du temple d'Azot; ils le franchissent d'un saut.

6 Then was the hand of Yahweh heavy against them of Ashdod, and he astounded them, —and smote with tumours Ashdod and her bounds.

La main du Seigneur s'appesantit donc sur les hommes d'Azot; le Seigneur fit fourmiller, tant dans leurs maisons qu'au milieu de leurs champs, une multitude de rats; en même temps, la mort répandit un grand trouble dans toute la ville.

7 And, when the men of Ashdod saw that, so, it was, then kept they saying, Let not the ark of the God of Israel abide with us, for, hard, is his hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

Les hommes d'Azot, voyant ce qui se passait, dirent: C'est parce que l'arche du Dieu d'Israël réside parmi nous, que sa main est si dure pour nous- mêmes et pour Dagon, notre dieu.

8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said—What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said: To Gath, let the ark of the God of Israel go round. So they took round the ark of the God of Israel.

Alors, ils firent partir des messagers pour convoquer chez eux les chefs des Philistins; ceux-ci venus, ils dirent: Que ferons-nous de l'arche du Dieu d'Israël? Les Géthéens dirent: Que l'on envoie chez nous l'arche du Dieu. En conséquence, on envoya à Geth l'arche du Dieu d'Israël.

9 And so it was, after they had taken it round, then was the hand of Yahweh against the city, with an exceeding great consternation, and he smote the men of the city, from the least, even unto the greatest, —and they brake out with tumours.

Dès qu'elle y fut arrivée, la main du Seigneur répandit dans cette ville un très grand trouble; elle frappa les hommes depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit, elle les frappa à l'anus, et les Géthéens firent des sièges pour eux.

10 Then sent they the ark of God to Ekron, —and so it was, when the ark of God entered Ekron, that the Ekronites made outcry, saying—They have brought round unto me the ark of the God of Israel, to slay me, and my people!

Puis, ils envoyèrent l'arche de Dieu à Ascalon; lorsqu'elle y entra, les habitants crièrent et dirent: Pourquoi nous amenez-vous l'arche du Dieu d'Israël? est-ce pour faire périr notre peuple?

11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said—Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and restore it to its own place, that it slay not me, and my people. For there had come a deadly consternation, throughout all the city, heavy exceedingly, was the hand of God there.

Et ils firent partir des messagers pour convoquer les chefs des Philistins; ceux-ci venus, ils dirent: Renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël; qu'elle réside en son lieu; qu'elle ne nous fasse point périr, nous et notre peuple.

12 And, the men who died not, were smitten with the tumours, —so the cry of the city for help, ascended the heavens.

Car, dans toute ville où elle entre, elle apporte un grand trouble. Et ceux qui ne meurent pas sont frappés à l'anus. Or, le cri de toute la ville s'éleva jusqu'au ciel.
