1 Samuel 24
1 And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying: Lo! David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
Sau khi đánh đuổi quân Phi-li-tin trở về, Sau-lơ được tin Đa-vít đang ở hoang mạc Ên-ghê-đi.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men, out of all Israel, —and went to seek David and his men, over the face of the rocks of the mountain-goats.
Ông dẫn theo 3.000 quân tinh nhuệ nhất Ít-ra-ên, đến tảng đá dê rừng, tìm Đa-vít và thuộc hạ.
3 And he came into the sheep-folds by the way, there, being a cave, which Saul entered, to cover his feet, —David and his men, in the hinder part of the cave, having taken up their abode.
Đến một nơi có chuồng chiên, Sau-lơ thấy một cái hang nên vào đó đi vệ sinh. Lúc ấy Đa-vít cùng các thuộc hạ đang ẩn nấp trong góc hang.
4 So David’s men said unto him—Lo! the day of which Yahweh said unto thee—Lo! I am about to deliver up thine enemy, into thy hand: therefore shall thou do unto him, as shall be good in thine eyes. And David arose, and cut off the corner of the robe which belonged to Saul, by stealth.
Một người thì thầm với Đa-vít: “Hôm nay là ngày Chúa Hằng Hữu có nói trước với ông: ‘Ta sẽ giao kẻ thù vào tay con, con xử nó ra sao tùy ý.’” Đa-vít nhẹ nhàng đứng dậy, đến cắt vạt áo ngoài của Sau-lơ.
5 And it came to pass afterwards that David’s heart smote him, —because he had cut off the corner [of the robe] which belonged to Saul.
Nhưng ngay sau đó, Đa-vít tự trách về việc này.
6 And he said unto his men—Far be it from me, of Yahweh, that I should do this thing unto my lord, unto the Anointed of Yahweh, to thrust forth my hand against him, —for, the Anointed of Yahweh, is he!
Ông nói với thuộc hạ: “Chúa Hằng Hữu biết điều ta đã không làm với vua ta. Chúa Hằng Hữu cấm ta ra tay ám hại vua, là người được Chúa Hằng Hữu xức dầu, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã lựa chọn người.”
7 So David did chide his men with the words, and did not suffer them to rise up against Saul. And, Saul, rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
Những lời Đa-vít thuyết phục đám thuộc hạ, làm họ không còn ý định giết Sau-lơ nữa. Sau-lơ ra khỏi hang tiếp tục lên đường,
8 Then David rose up, afterwards, and went forth out of the cave, and cried out after Saul, saying—My lord, O king! And, when Saul looked about behind him, David inclined his face to the earth, and bowed himself down.
Đa-vít ra theo, lớn tiếng gọi: “Thưa vua!” Sau-lơ quay lại nhìn, Đa-vít cung kính cúi gập người xuống.
9 Then said David to Saul, Wherefore shouldst thou hearken unto the words of the sons of earth, saying, —Lo! David is seeking thy hurt?
Ông nói lớn với Sau-lơ: “Tại sao vua nghe lời dân chúng nói rằng, tôi muốn hại vua?
10 Lo! this day, have thine own eyes seen, how Yahweh had delivered thee up, to-day, into my hand in the cave, and, when one bade me slay thee, I looked with compassion upon thee, —and I said—I will not thrust forth my hand against my lord, for, the Anointed of Yahweh, is he!
Ngày hôm nay, chính vua thấy rõ. Vì lúc nãy trong hang, Chúa Hằng Hữu có giao mạng vua vào tay tôi; có người bảo tôi sát hại, nhưng tôi không nỡ, vì tự nghĩ: ‘Ta không được giết vua, vì là người được Chúa Hằng Hữu xức dầu.’
11 But, my father, see, yea, see, the corner of thy robe in my hand, —for, in that I cut off the corner of thy robe, and yet did not slay thee, know thou, and see, that there is not in my hand either wrong or transgression, neither have I sinned against thee, yet art thou hunting my life, to take it.
Cha thấy không, con có vạt áo của cha trong tay đây này. Con cắt vạt áo chứ không giết cha. Như thế đủ cho cha thấy rằng con không định hại vua, phản chủ. Con không có lỗi gì cả, trong khi cha lại tìm mọi cách giết con!
12 Let Yahweh do justice betwixt me and thee, and let Yahweh avenge me of thee, —but, mine own hand, shall not be upon thee.
Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu xét xử cha và con. Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ trừng phạt cha vì những gì cha đã làm với con, còn con sẽ không bao giờ hại cha.
13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, From the lawless, proceedeth lawlessness, —mine own hand, therefore shall not be upon thee.
Người xưa có nói: ‘Từ người ác sẽ ra điều ác.’ Xin cha tin chắc rằng con sẽ không bao giờ hại cha.
14 After whom, hath the king of Israel come forth? After whom, art thou in pursuit? After a dead dog! after a single flea!
Là vua của Ít-ra-ên mà lại đem quân đuổi bắt một con chó chết, một con bọ chét hay sao?
15 Therefore shall, Yahweh, become, judge, and do justice betwixt me and thee, —that he may see, and plead my cause, and justly deliver me out of thy hand.
Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu phân xử giữa cha với con. Xin Ngài biện hộ và giải cứu con khỏi tay cha!”
16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Thy voice, is this, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
Nghe xong, Sau-lơ hỏi: “Có phải con đó không, Đa-vít?” Và vua khóc lớn tiếng.
17 And he said unto David, More righteous, art thou than I, for, thou, hast requited me, good, but, I, have requited thee, evil.
Vua nói với Đa-vít: “Con tốt hơn cha, vì con lấy thiện trả ác.
18 Thou, then, hast told to-day, how thou hast dealt with me, for good, —how, when Yahweh had surrendered me into thy hand, thou didst not slay me.
Hôm nay con đã lấy lòng nhân đãi cha, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu nạp cha vào tay con mà con không giết.
19 Yet, when a man findeth his enemy, will he let him get easily away? Yahweh, then, give thee, good, reward for what, this day, thou hast done unto me.
Không ai bắt được kẻ thù rồi thả cho đi, nhưng hôm nay con đã làm như thế với cha. Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu ân thưởng cho con.
20 Now, therefore, lo! I know that thou, shalt indeed become king, —and that the kingdom of Israel, shall be established in thy hand.
Ta biết chắc rồi đây con sẽ làm vua, và vương quốc Ít-ra-ên sẽ được lập vững bền trong tay con.
21 Now, therefore, swear unto me by Yahweh, that thou wilt not eat off my seed, after me, —and wilt not destroy my name out of the house my father.
Chỉ xin con nhân danh Chúa Hằng Hữu thề sẽ không tuyệt diệt con cháu của cha, làm cho cha không còn người mang danh, nối dõi!”
22 So David sware unto Saul, —and Saul departed unto his own house, but, David and his men, went up on the stronghold.
Vậy Đa-vít lập lời thề với Sau-lơ. Rồi Sau-lơ trở về hoàng cung, còn Đa-vít và thuộc hạ lại trở về chỗ ẩn trú.
