1 Samuel 23

1 Then told they David, saying, —Lo! the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and they are plundering the threshing-floors.

روزی به داوود خبر رسید که فلسطینی‌ها به شهر قعیله حمله کرده، خرمنها را غارت می‌کنند.

2 So David enquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And Yahweh said unto David—Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.

داوود از خداوند پرسید: «آیا بروم و با آنها بجنگم؟» خداوند پاسخ فرمود: «بله، برو با فلسطینی‌ها بجنگ و قعیله را نجات بده.»

3 But the men of David said unto him, Lo! we, here, in Judah, are afraid, —how much more, then, if we go to Keilah, against the ranks of the Philistines?

ولی افراد داوود به او گفتند: «ما حتی اینجا در یهودا می‌ترسیم چه برسد به آنکه به قعیله برویم و با لشکر فلسطینی‌ها بجنگیم!»

4 So David yet again enquired if Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him, —and said—Arise, go down to Keilah, for I am about to deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

پس داوود بار دیگر در این مورد از خداوند پرسید و خداوند باز به او گفت: «به قعیله برو و من تو را کمک خواهم کرد تا فلسطینی‌ها را شکست بدهی.»

5 David therefore went, with his men, to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and drave forth their cattle, and smote them, with a great smiting, so David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

پس داوود و افرادش به قعیله رفتند و فلسطینی‌ها را کشتند و گله‌هایشان را گرفتند و اهالی قعیله را نجات دادند.

6 Now it came to pass, when Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, fled unto David to Keilah, that he came down with, an ephod, in his hand.

وقتی اَبیّاتار کاهن پسر اَخیملک به قعیله نزد داوود فرار کرد، ایفود را نیز با خود برد.

7 And, when it was told Saul that David had entered Keilah, Saul said—God hath given him over into my hand, for he hath shut himself in by entering into a city with folding doors and bar.

هنگامی که شائول شنید که داوود در قعیله است، گفت: «خدا او را به دست من داده، چون داوود خود را در شهری حصاردار به دام انداخته است!»

8 So Saul summoned all the people to war, —to go down to Keilah, to besiege David, and his men.

پس شائول تمام نیروهای خود را احضار کرد و به سمت قعیله حرکت نمود تا داوود و افرادش را در شهر محاصره کند.

9 And David ascertained that, against him, Saul was contriving mischief, —so he said unto Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.

وقتی داوود از نقشهٔ شائول باخبر شد به اَبیّاتار گفت: «ایفود را بیاور تا از خداوند سؤال نمایم که چه باید کرد.»

10 Then said David: O Yahweh, God of Israel, thy servant, hath heard, that Saul is seeking to come unto Keilah, —to destroy the city, for my sake:

داوود گفت: «ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، شنیده‌ام که شائول عازم قعیله است و می‌خواهد این شهر را به دلیل مخالفت با من نابود کند.

11 Will the owners of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O Yahweh, God of Israel, I pray thee, tell thy servant. And Yahweh said—He will come down.

آیا اهالی قعیله مرا به دست او تسلیم خواهند کرد؟ آیا همان‌طور که شنیده‌ام شائول به اینجا خواهد آمد؟ ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، خواهش می‌کنم به من جواب بده.» خداوند فرمود: «بله، شائول خواهد آمد.» داوود گفت: «در این صورت آیا اهالی قعیله، من و افرادم را به دست او تسلیم می‌کنند؟» خداوند فرمود: «بله، به دست او تسلیم می‌کنند.»

12 Then said David, Will the owners of Keilah surrender me and my men, into the hand of Saul? And Yahweh said—They will surrender.

13 Then arose David and his men, about six hundred, and went forth out of Keilah, and went to and fro, whithersoever they could, —and, unto Saul, it was told that David had escaped out of Keilah, so he forbare to go forth.

پس داوود و افرادش که حدود ششصد نفر بودند برخاسته، از قعیله بیرون رفتند. آنها در یک جا نمی‌ماندند بلکه جای خود را دائم عوض می‌کردند. چون به شائول خبر رسید که داوود از قعیله فرار کرده است، دیگر به قعیله نرفت.

14 Then David abode in the wilderness, in the fortresses, and he abode in the hill country, in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him continually, but God delivered him not into his hand.

داوود در بیابان و در مخفیگاه‌های کوهستان زیف به سر می‌برد. شائول نیز هر روز به تعقیب او می‌پرداخت، ولی خداوند نمی‌گذاشت که دست او به داوود برسد.

15 Then David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life, David, being in the wilderness of Ziph, in the thicket.

وقتی داوود در حارث (واقع در زیف) بود، شنید که شائول برای کشتن او به آنجا آمده است.

16 So Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went unto David in the thicket, —and strengthened his hand in God;

یوناتان، پسر شائول به حارث آمد تا با وعده‌های خدا داوود را تقویت دهد.

17 and said unto him, —Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee, but, thou, shalt become king over Israel, and, I, shall be, next, unto thee, yea and, Saul my father, knoweth this.

یوناتان به او گفت: «نترس، پدرم هرگز تو را پیدا نخواهد کرد. تو پادشاه اسرائیل خواهی شد و من معاون تو. پدرم نیز این موضوع را به خوبی می‌داند.»

18 And they two solemnised a covenant before Yahweh, —and David remained in the thicket, but, Jonathan, departed to his own house.

پس هر دو ایشان در حضور خداوند پیمان دوستی خود را تجدید نمودند. داوود در حارث ماند، ولی یوناتان به خانه برگشت.

19 Then came up the Ziphites unto Saul in Gibeah, saying, —Is not David hiding himself with us, in the strongholds in the thicket, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the right of Jeshimon?

اما اهالی زیف نزد شائول به جِبعه رفتند و گفتند: «ما می‌دانیم داوود کجا پنهان شده است. او در صحرای نِگِب در مخفیگاه‌های حارث واقع در کوه حخیله است.

20 Now, therefore, according to all the desire of thy soul O king, to come down, come! and, ours, [will it be] to surrender him into the hand of the king.

هر وقت پادشاه مایل باشند، بیایند تا او را دست بسته تسلیم کنیم.»

21 Then said Saul, Blessed, be ye, of Yahweh, —because ye have taken pity upon me.

شائول گفت: «خداوند شما را برکت دهد که به فکر من هستید!

22 Go, I pray you, make ready yet further, and get to know and see his place, where may be his track, who hath seen him there, —for it hath been said unto me, Cunning indeed, is, he!

بروید و بیشتر تحقیق کنید تا مطمئن شوید او در آنجاست. ببینید چه کسی او را دیده است. می‌دانم که او خیلی زرنگ و حیله‌گر است.

23 See, then, and get to know—of all the hiding places, where he hideth himself, and return unto me, for certainty, then will I go with you, —and it shall be, if he is in the land, that I will search him out, through all the thousands of Judah.

مخفیگاه‌های او را پیدا کنید، آنگاه برگردید و جزئیات را به من گزارش دهید و من همراه شما بدانجا خواهم آمد. اگر در آنجا باشد، هر طور شده او را پیدا می‌کنم، حتی اگر مجبور باشم وجب به وجب تمام سرزمین یهودا را بگردم!»

24 So they arose and departed to Ziph, before Saul, —but, David and his men, were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah, to the right of Jeshimon.

مردان زیف به خانه‌هایشان برگشتند. اما داوود چون شنید که شائول در تعقیب او به طرف زیف می‌آید، برخاسته با افرادش به بیابان معون که در جنوب یهودا واقع شده است، رفت. ولی شائول و افرادش نیز به دنبال او تا معون رفتند.

25 Then Saul and his men departed, to seek [him]; but it had been told David, and he had gone down the cliff, and taken up his abode in the wilderness of Maon, —and when Saul had, heard it, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.

26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and, David and his men, on that side of the mountain, —wherefore David became hurried, to get away from the presence of Saul, but, Saul and his men, were surrounding David and his men, to capture then:

شائول و داوود در دو طرف یک کوه قرار گرفتند. شائول و سربازانش هر لحظه نزدیکتر می‌شدند و داوود سعی می‌کرد راه فراری پیدا کند، ولی فایده‌ای نداشت.

27 when, a messenger, came unto Saul, saying, —Haste thee and come! for the Philistines have spread over the land.

درست در این هنگام به شائول خبر رسید که فلسطینی‌ها به اسرائیل حمله کرده‌اند.

28 Then returned Saul from pursuing David, and departed to meet the Philistines, —for which cause, they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth ["the Cliff of Separation"].

پس شائول به ناچار دست از تعقیب داوود برداشت و برای جنگ با فلسطینی‌ها بازگشت. به این دلیل آن مکان را صخرۀ جدایی نامیدند.

29 And David went up from thence, —and abode in the strongholds of En-gedi.

داوود از آنجا رفت و در مخفیگاه‌های عین جدی پنهان شد.
