Proverbs 22
1 A [good] name is rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold.
令名は大いなる富にまさり、恩恵は銀や金よりも良い。
2 The rich and the poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
富める者と貧しい者とは共に世におる、すべてこれを造られたのは主である。
3 A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
賢い者は災を見て自ら避け、思慮のない者は進んでいって、罰をうける。
4 The reward of humility [and] the fear of the LORD [is] riches, and honour, and life.
謙遜と主を恐れることとの報いは、富と誉と命とである。
5 Thorns [and] snares are in the way of the froward: he that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.
よこしまな者の道にはいばらとわながあり、たましいを守る者は遠くこれを離れる。
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.
子をその行くべき道に従って教えよ、そうすれば年老いても、それを離れることがない。
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
富める者は貧しき者を治め、借りる者は貸す人の奴隷となる。
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
悪をまく者は災を刈り、その怒りのつえはすたれる。
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
人を見て恵む者はめぐまれる、自分のパンを貧しい人に与えるからである。
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and ignominy shall cease.
あざける者を追放すれば争いもまた去り、かつ、いさかいも、はずかしめもなくなる。
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
心の潔白を愛する者、その言葉の上品な者は、王がその友となる。
12 The eyes of the LORD preserve [him that hath] knowledge, but he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.
主の目は知識ある者を守る、しかし主は不信実な者の言葉を敗られる。
13 The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be murdered in the streets.
なまけ者は言う、「ししがそとにいる、わたしは、ちまたで殺される」と。
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
遊女の口は深い落し穴である、主に憎まれる者はその中に陥る。
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
愚かなことが子供の心の中につながれている、懲しめのむちは、これを遠く追いだす。
16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain, and] he that giveth to the rich, [cometh] only to want.
貧しい者をしえたげて自分の富を増そうとする者と、富める者に与える者とは、ついに必ず貧しくなる。
17 Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
あなたの耳を傾けて知恵ある者の言葉を聞き、かつ、わたしの知識にあなたの心を用いよ。
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, if they be established together upon thy lips.
これをあなたのうちに保ち、ことごとく、あなたのくちびるに備えておくなら、楽しいことである。
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made [them] known to thee this day, even to thee.
あなたが主に、寄り頼むことのできるように、わたしはきょう、これをあなたにも教える。
20 Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
わたしは、勧めと知識との三十の言葉をあなたのためにしるしたではないか。
21 To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?
それは正しいこと、真実なことをあなたに示し、あなたをつかわした者に真実の答をさせるためであった。
22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
貧しい者を、貧しいゆえに、かすめてはならない、悩む者を、町の門でおさえつけてはならない。
23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.
それは主が彼らの訴えをただし、かつ彼らをそこなう者の命を、そこなわれるからである。
24 Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:
怒る者と交わるな、憤る人と共に行くな。
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
それはあなたがその道にならって、みずから、わなに陥ることのないためである。
26 Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts:
あなたは人と手を打つ者となってはならない、人の負債の保証をしてはならない。
27 If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
あなたが償うものがないとき、あなたの寝ている寝床までも、人が奪い取ってよかろうか。
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
あなたの先祖が立てた古い地境を移してはならない。
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
あなたはそのわざに巧みな人を見るか、そのような人は王の前に立つが、卑しい人々の前には立たない。
