Proverbs 22
1 A [good] name is rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Nama baik lebih berharga daripada harta yang banyak; dikasihi orang lebih baik daripada diberi perak dan emas.
2 The rich and the poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
Orang kaya dan orang miskin mempunyai satu hal yang sama: Tuhanlah yang menciptakan mereka semua.
3 A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
Orang bijaksana menghindar apabila melihat bahaya; orang bodoh berjalan terus lalu tertimpa malapetaka.
4 The reward of humility [and] the fear of the LORD [is] riches, and honour, and life.
Orang yang takwa kepada TUHAN dan merendahkan diri, akan bahagia, makmur dan dihormati.
5 Thorns [and] snares are in the way of the froward: he that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.
Perangkap dan jebakan terdapat pada jalan orang curang; jauhilah semua itu jika engkau ingin selamat.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Ajarlah seorang anak cara hidup yang patut baginya, maka sampai masa tuanya ia akan hidup demikian.
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Orang miskin dikuasai oleh orang kaya; orang yang meminjam dikuasai oleh orang yang meminjamkan.
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
Orang yang menabur kecurangan akan menuai bencana; akhirnya kuasanya untuk bertindak sewenang-wenang akan lenyap.
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
Orang yang baik hati diberkati TUHAN, karena ia membagi rezeki dengan orang yang berkekurangan.
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and ignominy shall cease.
Usirlah orang yang suka menghina, maka berhentilah pertikaian, permusuhan dan cela-mencela.
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
Orang yang menyukai ketulusan dan yang manis bicaranya, akan menjadi sahabat raja.
12 The eyes of the LORD preserve [him that hath] knowledge, but he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.
Dengan membongkar kebohongan orang yang curang, TUHAN menjaga agar pengetahuan yang benar tetap terpelihara.
13 The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be murdered in the streets.
Si pemalas suka tinggal di rumah; ia berkata, "Ada singa di luar, aku bisa diterkam di tengah jalan."
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
Rayuan wanita pelacur merupakan jebakan; orang yang dimurkai TUHAN terperosok ke dalamnya.
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Sudah sewajarnya anak-anak berbuat hal-hal yang bodoh, tetapi rotan dapat mengajar mereka mengubah kelakuan.
16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain, and] he that giveth to the rich, [cometh] only to want.
Siapa mau menjadi kaya dengan menindas orang miskin dan memberi hadiah kepada orang berada pada akhirnya akan melarat.
17 Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
Dengarkan, aku akan mengajarkan kepadamu petuah orang arif! Perhatikanlah pengajaranku.
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, if they be established together upon thy lips.
Engkau akan senang apabila pengajaranku itu kausimpan dalam hatimu. Karena dengan demikian kau telah siap apabila kau hendak memakainya.
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made [them] known to thee this day, even to thee.
Aku mengajarkannya kepadamu sekarang karena aku ingin kau menaruh kepercayaanmu kepada TUHAN.
20 Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
Tiga puluh petuah sudah kutuliskan untukmu--petuah-petuah yang mengandung pengetahuan dan nasihat yang baik;
21 To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?
dan yang akan mengajarkan kepadamu apa yang sungguh-sungguh benar. Nanti, jika kau ditanyai, kau dapat memberi jawaban yang tepat.
22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
Janganlah merugikan orang miskin, hanya karena ia lemah; dan di sidang pengadilan janganlah memperkosa hak orang yang tak berdaya.
23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.
Sebab, TUHAN akan membela perkara mereka dan mencabut nyawa orang yang menindas mereka.
24 Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:
Janganlah bergaul dengan orang yang suka marah dan cepat naik darah.
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
Nanti engkau akan meniru dia, dan tidak bisa lagi menghilangkan kebiasaan itu.
26 Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts:
Janganlah berjanji untuk menanggung utang orang lain.
27 If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
Nanti jika engkau tidak sanggup melunasinya, tempat tidurmu pun akan disita.
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
Janganlah sekali-kali memindahkan batas tanah yang sudah ditetapkan oleh nenek moyangmu.
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
Pernahkah engkau melihat orang yang cakap melakukan pekerjaannya? Orang itu akan dipekerjakan di istana raja-raja, bukan di rumah orang biasa.
