Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
Ein Spötter ist der Wein, ein Lärmer Bier; wer davon taumelt, ist nicht klug.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.
Wie eines jungen Löwen Knurren ist des Königs Unwillen; wenn er in Zorn gerät, verwirkt man schon sein Leben.
3 It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife: but every fool will be quarrelling.
Für einen Mann ist's eine Ehre, einem Streite fernzubleiben, und nur ein Tor tut sich hervor.
4 The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Im Herbste pflügt der Faule nicht; wenn er dann in der Ernte nachfragt, ist nichts da.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Wie Wasser in der Tiefe, ruht der Plan im Herzen eines Mannes; ein kluger Mann weiß es zu schöpfen.
6 Most men wilt proclaim every one his own kindness: but a faithful man who can find?
Gar mancher muß den Mann herbeirufen, dem Gutes er getan. Denn einen Dankbaren, wer kann ihn finden?
7 A just man that walketh in his integrity, blessed are his children after him.
Wenn jemand in Gerechtigkeit und Unschuld lebt, den ahmen seine Kinder nach.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Ein König auf dem Richterstuhle der Gerechtigkeit soll mit den Augen jeden Übeltäter aufspüren!
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Wer könnte sagen: "Gereinigt habe ich mein Herz, von meiner Lieblingssünde frei gemacht!"?
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
Zweifach Gewicht und zweifach Maß, sie beide sind dem Herrn ein Greuel.
11 Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Ein Knabe schon gibt sich in seinen Taten zu erkennen, ob krumm, ob grade wird sein Tun.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
Das hörend Ohr, das sehend Auge, sie beide hat der Herr gemacht.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Lieb nicht den Schlaf, damit du nicht verarmst! Mach schon die Augen auf, solang du Brot in Fülle hast!
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
"Wie schlecht, wie schlecht!" sagt da ein Käufer; doch ist es sein geworden, rühmt er sich.
15 There is gold, and abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Hat man auch Gold und Perlen eine Menge, ein gläsernes Gefäß ist eines Anwalts Rede.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for strangers.
Wer einem andern bürgt, dem kann sein eigen Kleid genommen werden; gepfändet wird er Fremder wegen.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Süß schmeckt dem Mann das Brot der Lüge; doch hintendrein füllt sich sein Mund mit Kieselstein.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and by wise guidance make thou war,
Die Pläne prüfe durch Beratung! Mit Klugheit führe Krieg!
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.
Geheimnisse verrät, wer stets auf Wanderschaft. Drum gib mit Plaudermäulern dich nicht ab!
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
Wer auf den Vater und die Mutter wenig gibt, des Licht verlöscht im Dunkeln.
21 An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Besitz, zu Anbeginn in Hast erworben, bleibt doch am Ende ohne Segen.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil: wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Sprich nicht. "Ich muß den bittern Kelch zur Neige trinken." Nein, hoffe auf den Herrn! Er kann dir helfen.
23 Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Ein Greuel für den Herrn ist zweierlei Gewicht; nichts nützt die falsche Waage.
24 A man’s goings are of the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
Des Mannes Schritte sind vom Herrn bestimmt; wie kann ein Mensch sich selber seinen Weg bestimmen?
25 It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
Gefährlich ist's für Menschen, Heiliges vorschnell zu versprechen und nachher das Gelobte wiederum zu überlegen.
26 A wise king winnoweth the wicked, and bringeth the [threshing] wheel over them.
Ein weiser König späht die Frevler aus, vergilt an ihnen Unordnung.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the innermost parts of the belly.
Des Menschen Geist ist vor dem Herren licht, und er durchforscht sein Innerstes.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
Der König hütet immerwährend Huld; durch Liebe stützt er seinen Thron.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
Der Ruhm der Jünglinge ist ihre Stärke; der Greise Schmuck ist graues Haar.
30 Stripes that wound cleanse away evil: and strokes [reach] the innermost parts of the belly.
Wenn eine Wunde schwärt, Umschläge bringen Linderung, so Schläge auch dem Herzensgrunde.
