Proverbs 12
1 Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
Qui aime la réprimande aime la science; mais qui hait les remontrances est un sot.
2 A good man shall obtain favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.
L’Homme bon s’attire la bienveillance de l’Eternel, l’homme artificieux sa réprobation:
3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall never be moved.
On ne se maintient pas par l’iniquité; mais les justes jettent des racines inébranlables.
4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Une femme vertueuse est la couronne de son époux; une dévergondée, c’est la carie dans ses os.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are just: [but] the counsels of the wicked are deceit.
Les justes ne rêvent que justice, les méchants ne combinent que tromperies.
6 The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
Les méchants ne parlent que de dresser des embûches meurtrières; mais la bouche des justes ne s’applique qu’à sauver.
7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.
Une secousse, et les méchants ne sont plus! Mais la demeure des justes est stable.
8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
En proportion de son intelligence, l’homme mérite des éloges; mais les cœurs obliques sont un objet de mépris.
9 Better is he that is lightly esteemed, and hath a servant, than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.
Mieux vaut être dédaigné et posséder un esclave, que de faire le grand et manquer de pain.
10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
Le juste a le souci du bien-être de ses bêtes; mais les entrailles des méchants ne connaissent pas la pitié.
11 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.
Celui qui cultive sa terre a du pain à satiété; celui qui poursuit des frivolités manque de sens.
12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth [fruit].
L’Impie convoite ce qui devient un piège pour les méchants; mais la racine des justes est généreuse en fruits.
13 In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man: but the righteous shall come out of trouble.
Les lèvres criminelles constituent un piège funeste; mais le juste échappe à la peine.
14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the doings of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.
L’Homme doit à l’usage de la parole le bien dont il jouit; on paie à chacun le prix de ses œuvres.
15 The way of the foolish is right in his own eyes: but he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.
La voie de l’insensé paraît droite à ses yeux; mais écouter des conseils, c’est être sage.
16 A fool’s vexation is presently known: but a prudent man concealeth shame.
Le sot, sur l’heure, manifeste son dépit; un habile homme sait dévorer un affront.
17 He that uttereth truth sheweth forth righteousness, but a false witness deceit.
Celui qui est épris de loyauté expose fidèlement les faits; le témoin mensonger les dénature.
18 There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Il en est dont la parole blesse comme des coups d’épée, mais, le langage des sages est un baume bienfaisant.
19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
La vérité est éternelle; le mensonge dure un clin d’œil.
20 Deceit is in the heart of them that devise evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.
Dans le cœur de ceux qui méditent le mal s’il n’y a que perfidie; chez ceux qui donnent des conseils salutaires, il n’y a que joie.
21 There shall no mischief happen to the righteous: but the wicked shall be filled with evil.
Aucune calamité ne surprend le juste; mais les méchants sont accablés de maux.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
L’Eternel a horreur des lèvres mensongères; mais il aime ceux qui agissent avec loyauté.
23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
Un homme avisé ne fait pas montre de son savoir; les esprits sots crient leur sottise.
24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be put under taskwork.
La main diligente assure le pouvoir; la main négligente paie tribut.
25 Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop; but a good word maketh it glad.
Le souci abat le cœur de l’homme; mais une bonne parole y ramène la joie.
26 The righteous is a guide to his neighbour: but the way of the wicked causeth them to err.
Supérieur à tous est le juste; les méchants suivent un chemin qui les égare.
27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the precious substance of men [is to] the diligent.
La paresse évite de mettre son gibier sur le feu; mais l’activité est un trésor précieux pour l’homme.
28 In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.
Sur le chemin de la vertu se trouve la vie, et son sentier aboutit à l’immortalité.
