Proverbs 1
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
ダビデの子、イスラエルの王ソロモンの箴言。
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;
これは人に知恵と教訓とを知らせ、悟りの言葉をさとらせ、
3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness and judgment and equity;
賢い行いと、正義と公正と公平の教訓をうけさせ、
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion:
思慮のない者に悟りを与え、若い者に知識と慎みを得させるためである。
5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; and that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:
賢い者はこれを聞いて学に進み、さとい者は指導を得る。
6 To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
人はこれによって箴言と、たとえと、賢い者の言葉と、そのなぞとを悟る。
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: [but] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
主を恐れることは知識のはじめである、愚かな者は知恵と教訓を軽んじる。
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
わが子よ、あなたは父の教訓を聞き、母の教を捨ててはならない。
9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
それらは、あなたの頭の麗しい冠となり、あなたの首の飾りとなるからである。
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
わが子よ、悪者があなたを誘っても、それに従ってはならない。
11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;
彼らがあなたに向かって、「一緒に来なさい。われわれは待ち伏せして、人の血を流し、罪のない者を、ゆえなく伏してねらい、
12 Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; (Sheol h7585)
陰府のように、彼らを生きたままで、のみ尽し、健やかな者を、墓に下る者のようにしよう。 (Sheol h7585)
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil;
われわれは、さまざまの尊い貨財を得、奪い取った物で、われわれの家を満たそう。
14 Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; we will all have one purse:
あなたもわれわれの仲間に加わりなさい、われわれは共に一つの金袋を持とう」と言っても、
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
わが子よ、彼らの仲間になってはならない、あなたの足をとどめて、彼らの道に行ってはならない。
16 For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
彼らの足は悪に走り、血を流すことに速いからだ。
17 For in vain is the net spread, in the eyes of any bird:
すべて鳥の目の前で網を張るのは、むだである。
18 And these lay wait for their own blood, they lurk privily for their own lives.
彼らは自分の血を待ち伏せし、自分の命を伏してねらうのだ。
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
すべて利をむさぼる者の道はこのようなものである。これはその持ち主の命を取り去るのだ。
20 Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; she uttereth her voice in the broad places;
知恵は、ちまたに呼ばわり、市場にその声をあげ、
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse; at the entering in of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words:
城壁の頂で叫び、町の門の入口で語る。
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
「思慮のない者たちよ、あなたがたは、いつまで思慮のないことを好むのか。あざける者は、いつまで、あざけり楽しみ、愚かな者は、いつまで、知識を憎むのか。
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
わたしの戒めに心をとめよ、見よ、わたしは自分の思いを、あなたがたに告げ、わたしの言葉を、あなたがたに知らせる。
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
わたしは呼んだが、あなたがたは聞くことを拒み、手を伸べたが、顧みる者はなく、
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
かえって、あなたがたはわたしのすべての勧めを捨て、わたしの戒めを受けなかったので、
26 I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
わたしもまた、あなたがたが災にあう時に、笑い、あなたがたが恐慌にあう時、あざけるであろう。
27 When your fear cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you.
これは恐慌が、あらしのようにあなたがたに臨み、災が、つむじ風のように臨み、悩みと悲しみとが、あなたがたに臨む時である。
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:
その時、彼らはわたしを呼ぶであろう、しかし、わたしは答えない。ひたすら、わたしを求めるであろう、しかし、わたしに会えない。
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
彼らは知識を憎み、主を恐れることを選ばず、
30 They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof:
わたしの勧めに従わず、すべての戒めを軽んじたゆえ、
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
自分の行いの実を食らい、自分の計りごとに飽きる。
32 For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
思慮のない者の不従順はおのれを殺し、愚かな者の安楽はおのれを滅ぼす。
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.
しかし、わたしに聞き従う者は安らかに住まい、災に会う恐れもなく、安全である」。
