Nehemiah 4
1 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
Mais lorsque Sanballat apprit que nous construisions la muraille, il se mit en colère, fut très indigné, et se moqua des Juifs.
2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned?
Il prit la parole devant ses frères et l'armée de Samarie, et dit: « Que font ces faibles Juifs? Vont-ils se fortifier? Vont-ils faire des sacrifices? Vont-ils finir en un jour? Vont-ils faire revivre les pierres des tas d'ordures, puisqu'elles sont brûlées? »
3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.
Or Tobija, l'Ammonite, était près de lui, et il disait: « Ce qu'ils construisent, si un renard y grimpait, il briserait leur mur de pierre. »
4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up to spoiling in a land of captivity:
« Écoute, notre Dieu, car nous sommes méprisés. Renvoie leur opprobre sur leur propre tête. Livrez-les au pillage dans un pays de captivité.
5 and cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked [thee] to anger before the builders.
Ne couvre pas leur iniquité. Ne laisse pas leur péché s'effacer devant toi, car ils ont insulté les bâtisseurs. »
6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half [the height] thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
Nous construisîmes donc la muraille, et toute la muraille fut jointe jusqu'à la moitié de sa hauteur, car le peuple avait envie de travailler.
7 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth;
Mais lorsque Sanballat, Tobija, les Arabes, les Ammonites et les Asdodiens apprirent que la réparation des murs de Jérusalem avançait et que les brèches commençaient à être comblées, ils furent très en colère;
8 and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.
et ils se concertèrent tous pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et semer la confusion parmi nous.
9 But we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
Mais nous avons prié notre Dieu, et nous avons veillé jour et nuit sur eux, à cause d'eux.
10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
Juda dit: « La force des porteurs de fardeaux s'affaiblit et il y a beaucoup de décombres, de sorte que nous ne pouvons pas construire la muraille. »
11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
Nos adversaires ont dit: « Ils ne sauront ni ne verront, jusqu'à ce que nous entrions au milieu d'eux, que nous les tuions et que nous fassions cesser l'ouvrage. »
12 And it came to pass that, when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times from all places, Ye must return unto us.
Lorsque les Juifs qui habitaient près d'eux arrivèrent, ils nous dirent dix fois de toutes parts: « Où que vous vous tourniez, ils nous attaqueront. »
13 Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, In the open places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
C'est pourquoi j'ai placé des gardes dans les parties les plus basses de l'espace derrière la muraille, dans les endroits ouverts. Je plaçai le peuple par groupes de familles, avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.
14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.
Je regardai, je me levai et je dis aux nobles, aux chefs et au reste du peuple: « N'ayez pas peur d'eux! Souvenez-vous du Seigneur, qui est grand et redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, vos fils, vos filles, vos femmes et vos maisons. »
15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
Lorsque nos ennemis apprirent que cela nous était connu, et que Dieu avait fait échouer leurs projets, nous retournâmes tous à la muraille, chacun à son ouvrage.
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants wrought in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
A partir de ce moment-là, la moitié de mes serviteurs travailla à l'ouvrage, et la moitié tint les lances, les boucliers, les arcs et les cottes de mailles; les chefs étaient derrière toute la maison de Juda.
17 They that builded the wall and they that bare burdens laded themselves, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon;
Ceux qui construisaient la muraille et ceux qui portaient les fardeaux se chargeaient eux-mêmes; chacun faisait l'ouvrage avec une de ses mains, et de l'autre tenait son arme.
18 and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
Parmi les bâtisseurs, chacun portait son épée au côté, et c'est ainsi qu'ils bâtissaient. Celui qui sonnait de la trompette était près de moi.
19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another:
Je dis aux nobles, aux chefs et au reste du peuple: « L'ouvrage est grand et très étendu, et nous sommes séparés sur la muraille, loin les uns des autres.
20 in what place soever ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us; our God shall fight for us.
Partout où vous entendez le son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous auprès de nous. Notre Dieu combattra pour nous. »
21 So we wrought in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
Nous avons donc fait le travail. La moitié du peuple tenait les lances depuis le lever du jour jusqu'à l'apparition des étoiles.
22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labour in the day.
Au même moment, je dis au peuple: « Que chacun, avec son serviteur, loge dans Jérusalem, afin que, la nuit, ils nous servent de garde et que, le jour, ils travaillent. »
23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, every one [went with] his weapon [to] the water.
Ainsi, ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes serviteurs, ni les hommes de la garde qui me suivaient n'enlevèrent nos vêtements. Chacun a apporté son arme à l'eau.
