Judges 7
1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Alors Jérubbaal (c'est-à-dire, Gédéon) se leva dès le matin, ainsi que toute la troupe qu'il avait avec lui, et ils campèrent à la source de Harod. Or les Madianites avaient leur camp au nord près du monticule de More dans la vallée.
2 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
Et l'Éternel dit à Gédéon: Il y a trop de gens avec toi, pour que je livre Madian entre leurs mains, car il ne faut pas qu'Israël se glorifie à ma face et dise: C'est mon bras qui m'a sauvé.
3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Fais donc proclamer aux oreilles de l'armée cet avis: Que tous ceux qui sont timides et craintifs s'en retournent, et de la montagne se retirent à Galaad. Alors vingt-deux mille s'en allèrent de l'armée, et il en resta dix mille.
4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Et l'Éternel dit à Gédéon: Il y en a encore trop. Fais-les descendre à l'eau, et là je t'en ferai l'épuration; et celui-là marchera avec toi, duquel je te dirai: il marchera avec toi; et aucun de ceux desquels je te dirai: il ne marchera pas avec toi, ne devra marcher avec toi.
5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
Et il fit descendre la troupe à l'eau, et l'Éternel dit à Gédéon: Mets à part tous ceux qui tireront l'eau avec la langue en lapant comme lape le chien, et de même tous ceux qui s'agenouilleront pour boire.
6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
Et le nombre de ceux qui lapèrent en portant avec la main l'eau à la bouche fut de trois cents hommes, et tout le reste de la troupe s'était agenouillé pour humer l'eau.
7 And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the people go every man unto his place.
Et l'Éternel dit à Gédéon: C'est par ces trois cents hommes qui ont lapé, que je vous sauverai et livrerai Madian entre tes mains; d'ailleurs que tout le reste de la troupe regagne le logis.
8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the men of Israel every man unto his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
Et ils prirent avec eux des vivres et leurs trompettes, et Gédéon renvoya les autres Israélites chacun dans leurs tentes, et il retint les trois cents hommes. Or le camp de Madian était en bas dans la vallée.
9 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
Et pendant la nuit même l'Éternel lui dit: Debout! descends sur le camp, car je l'ai livré entre tes mains,
10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Purah thy servant down to the camp:
et si tu redoutes cette descente, descends au camp avec Pura, ton valet.
11 and thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down into the camp. Then went he down with Purah his servant unto the outermost part of the armed men that were in the camp.
Et tu écouteras ce qu'on y dit; en suite de quoi tu prendras courage pour descendre sur le camp. Alors il descendit avec Pura, son valet, jusqu'à l'extrémité des avant-postes du camp.
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea shore for multitude.
Or les Madianites et les Amalécites et tous les enfants de l'Orient s'étendaient dans la vallée aussi nombreux que des sauterelles, et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables, pareils en quantité aux grains de sable des bords de la mer.
13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and smote it that it fell, and turned it upside down, that the tent lay along.
Et Gédéon vint, et voici, l'un d'eux racontait à l'autre un songe en ces termes: Voici, j'ai eu un songe: et voilà qu'une galette de pain d'orge roulait dans le camp de Madian, et elle arriva jusqu'aux tentes et elle les heurta, et elles tombèrent, et elle les mit sens dessus dessous, et les tentes étaient renversées.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: into his hand God hath delivered Midian, and all the host.
Et l'autre répondait et disait: Ce n'est pas autre chose que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, l'homme d'Israël: Dieu livre entre ses mains Madian et toute l'armée.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
Et Gédéon, à l'ouïe du récit du songe et de son explication, se prosterna. Puis étant rentré au camp d'Israël il dit: Debout! car l'Éternel livre entre vos mains le camp de Madian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.
Et il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois sections. Et il leur mit à tous des trompettes à la main et des cruches vides, et des torches dans les cruches.
17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
Et il leur dit: Regardez à moi, et imitez! Voici, je vais me porter au bout du camp, et ce que je ferai, faites-le de même.
18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For the LORD and for Gideon.
Et quand moi et tous mes compagnons, nous sonnerons de la trompette, vous aussi, sonnez de la trompette tout autour du camp et criez: Pour l'Éternel et Gédéon!
19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.
Ainsi Gédéon accompagné de ses cent hommes se porta à un bout du camp à l'entrée de la veille médiale: on venait à peine de placer les sentinelles. Alors ils sonnèrent des trompettes et cassèrent les cruches qu'ils portaient à la main,
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD and of Gideon.
et les trois sections sonnèrent des trompettes, et cassèrent les cruches, et prenant de la main gauche les torches et de la droite les trompettes pour en sonner, ils crièrent: Épée de l'Éternel et de Gédéon!
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran; and they shouted, and put [them] to flight.
Et ils restèrent chacun en place tout autour du camp. Alors dans tout le camp, de courir, de pousser des cris, et de fuir.
22 And they blew the three hundred trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the host: and the host fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
Et ils sonnèrent des trois cents trompettes, et l'Éternel leur fit dans toute l'enceinte du camp tourner leurs épées les uns contre les autres. Et l'armée s'enfuit jusqu'à Beth-Sitta vers Tsejera, à la lisière d'Abel-Mehola près de Thabbath.
23 And the men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.
Alors se rassemblèrent les Israélites de Nephthali et d'Asser et de tout Manassé, et ils se mirent à la poursuite de Madian.
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth-barah, even Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even Jordan.
Et Gédéon dépêcha des messagers dans toute la montagne d'Ephraïm pour dire: Descendez à la rencontre des Madianites, et coupez-leur l'eau jusqu'à Beth-Bara et au Jourdain. Alors tous les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent, et ils leur coupèrent l'eau jusqu'à Beth-Bara et au Jourdain.
25 And they took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond Jordan.
Et ils firent prisonniers deux princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeeb, et ils égorgèrent Oreb sur le rocher d'Oreb et Zeeb près du Pressoir de Zeeb; et ils poursuivirent les Madianites, et ils apportèrent à Gédéon depuis l'autre côté du Jourdain les têtes d'Oreb et de Zeeb.
