Judges 3
1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
Voici les nations que l'Éternel laissa pour mettre Israël à l'épreuve par elles, tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan,
2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof;
afin que les générations des enfants d'Israël le sachent, pour leur apprendre la guerre, du moins à ceux qui ne l'avaient pas connue auparavant:
3 [namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath.
4 And they were for to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
On les laissa pour éprouver Israël par eux, afin de savoir s'ils écouteraient les commandements de l'Éternel, qu'il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse.
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites; the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
Les enfants d'Israël habitaient parmi les Cananéens, les Hittites, les Amorites, les Perizzites, les Hivvites et les Jébusites.
6 and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
Ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, donnèrent leurs propres filles à leurs fils et servirent leurs dieux.
7 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.
Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, ils oublièrent l'Éternel, leur Dieu, et servirent les Baals et les Ashéroths.
8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
La colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cushan Rishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie; les enfants d'Israël furent au service de Cushan Rishathaim pendant huit ans.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
Lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel, l'Éternel suscita aux enfants d'Israël un sauveur qui les sauva, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb.
10 And the spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.
L'Esprit de Yahvé descendit sur lui, et il jugea Israël. Il partit en guerre, et Yahvé livra entre ses mains Cushan Rishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie. Sa main l'emporta sur Cushan Rishathaim.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans, puis Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut.
12 And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
Les enfants d'Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.
Il rassembla à lui les fils d'Ammon et d'Amalek, et il alla frapper Israël, et ils possédèrent la ville des palmiers.
14 And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
Les enfants d'Israël servirent Églon, roi de Moab, pendant dix-huit ans.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and the children of Israel sent a present by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.
Mais lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à Yahvé, Yahvé leur suscita un sauveur: Ehud, fils de Gera, le Benjamite, un gaucher. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un tribut à Eglon, roi de Moab.
16 And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
Ehud se fabriqua une épée à deux tranchants, longue d'une coudée, qu'il porta sous ses vêtements, sur sa cuisse droite.
17 And he offered the present unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.
Il offrit le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab. Or Églon était un homme très gras.
18 And when he had made an end of offering the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
Quand Ehud eut fini d'offrir le tribut, il renvoya les gens qui portaient le tribut.
19 But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
Mais lui-même s'éloigna des idoles de pierre qui se trouvaient près de Gilgal et dit: « J'ai un message secret pour toi, ô roi. » Le roi dit: « Tais-toi! » Tous ceux qui se tenaient près de lui le quittèrent.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in his summer parlour. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Ehud vint le trouver, et il était assis seul dans la chambre haute et fraîche. Ehud dit: « J'ai un message de Dieu pour toi. » Il se leva de son siège.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
Ehud étendit sa main gauche, prit l'épée de sa cuisse droite et se la planta dans le corps.
22 and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his belly; and it came out behind.
La poignée entra aussi après la lame; et la graisse se referma sur la lame, car il n'avait pas retiré l'épée de son corps; et elle sortit par derrière.
23 Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
Ehud sortit sur le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute et les verrouilla.
24 Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked; and they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
Après qu'il fut parti, ses serviteurs vinrent et virent que les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées. Ils dirent: « Il est sûrement en train de se couvrir les pieds dans la chambre haute. »
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took the key, and opened [them]: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
Ils attendirent jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient honte; et voici qu'il n'ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute. Ils prirent donc la clé et les ouvrirent, et voici que leur seigneur était tombé mort sur le sol.
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.
Ehud s'échappa pendant qu'ils attendaient, passa au-delà des idoles de pierre et se sauva à Seirah.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them.
Lorsqu'il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Ephraïm; les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il les conduisit.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.
Il leur dit: « Suivez-moi, car Yahvé a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. » Ils le suivirent et prirent les gués du Jourdain contre les Moabites, et ne permirent à aucun homme de passer.
29 And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valour; and there escaped not a man.
Ils frappèrent en ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous les hommes forts et tous les hommes valeureux. Aucun homme n'échappa.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
Moab fut donc soumis en ce jour sous la main d'Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans.
31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also saved Israel.
Après lui, Shamgar, fils d'Anath, frappa six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœuf. Il sauva aussi Israël.
