< Jonah 1 >

1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Dubbiin Waaqayyoo akkana jedhee gara Yoonaas ilma Amitaayi dhufe:
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
“Sababii hamminni ishee fuula koo dura dhufeef, gara Nanawwee magaalaa guddittii dhaqiitii isheedhaan mormuudhaan itti lallabi.”
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Yoonaas garuu Waaqayyo duraa baqatee Tarshiishitti qajeele. Innis Yoopheetti gad buʼee doonii gara Tarshiish deemu tokko argate. Erga gatii geejjibaa baasee booddee Waaqayyo duraa miliquuf jedhee doonii yaabbatee Tarshiishitti imale.
4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
Waaqayyo bubbee jabaa tokko galaanatti erge; dambaliin akka malee jabaan tokko kaanaan dooniin sun gargar caccabuu gaʼe.
5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
Warri doonii sana oofan hundinuu akka malee sodaatanii tokkoon tokkoon isaanii waaqa isaaniitti iyyatan. Isaanis baʼaa xinneessuuf jedhanii doonii irraa feʼiisa galaanatti gad dadarbatan. Yoonaas garuu garaa doonii seenee ciisee achitti hirribni guddaan isa qabe.
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
Ajajaan doonii sanaa gara isaa dhufee, “Ati akkam akkas rafuu dandeessa? Kaʼii waaqa kee waammadhu! Tarii inni nuu dhagaʼee nus duʼa oolla taʼaatii” jedheen.
7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Warri doonii oofanis, “Kottaa nama balaa kana nutti fide beekuuf ixaa buufannaatii” waliin jedhan. Isaan ixaa buufannaan ixaan sun Yoonaas irra buʼe.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
Kanaafuu isaan, “Mee nutti himi; namni balaa nutti dhufe kana hundaaf itti gaafatamu eenyu? Hojiin kee maali? Ati eessaa dhufte? Biyyi kee eessa? Ati saba kam keessaa dhalatte?” jedhanii isa gaafatan.
9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
Innis, “Ani Ibricha Waaqayyo, Waaqa isa samii, galaanaa fi lafa uume sana waaqeffatuu dha” jedhee deebise.
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Wanni kun isaan sodaachisnaan, “Ati maal goote?” jedhanii isa gaafatan. Isaanis sababii inni duraanuu isaanitti himeef akka inni Waaqayyo duraa miliquuf baqachuutti jiru beekan.
11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
Galaanni sunis ittuma caalchisee raafamaa dhufe. Kanaafuu isaan, “Nu amma galaana kana tasgabbeessuuf maal si gochuu qabna?” jedhanii isa gaafatan.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
Innis, “Ol na fuudhaatii galaanatti na darbadhaa; ergasii galaanichi gab jedha. Ani akka dhaʼaan galaanaa hamaan kun sababii balleessaa kootiitiif dhufe nan beeka” jedhee deebise.
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
Namoonni sun garuu qooda kanaa doonii sana gara qarqaraatti baasuuf waan dandaʼan hunda yaalan. Isaan garuu galaanni sun ittuma caalchisee raafamaa waan dhufeef baasuu hin dandeenye.
14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
Kana irratti isaan, “Yaa Waaqayyo, ati sababii lubbuu namicha kanaatiif jettee nu hin fixin. Yaa Waaqayyo ati waan akkuma feete hojjetteef yakka lubbuu nama balleessaa hin qabnee ajjeesuu nutti hin herregin” jedhanii gara Waaqayyootti iyyatan.
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
Akkasiin Yoonaasin fuudhanii doonii irraa gad darbatan; galaanni raafamaa ture sunis gab jedhe.
16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
Kana irratti namoonni sun akka malee Waaqayyoon sodaatanii aarsaa Waaqayyoof dhiʼeessan; wareegas wareeganiif.
17 And the LORD prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Waaqayyo garuu akka inni Yoonaasin liqimsuuf qurxummii guddaa tokko qopheesse; Yoonaasis guyyaa sadii fi halkan sadii garaa qurxummii sanaa keessa ture.
