John 4
1 When therefore the Lord knew how that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
そのため，イエスがヨハネより多くの弟子を作ってバプテスマを施していることがファリサイ人たちの耳に入ったことを主が知ったとき
2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),
（イエス自身がバプテスマを施すことはせず，弟子たちがそうしていたのだが），
3 he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
彼はユダヤを去り，ガリラヤに向けて出発した。
4 And he must needs pass through Samaria.
しかし，サマリアを通り抜けなければならなかった。
5 So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph:
そこで，ヤコブがその子ヨセフに与えた一区画の土地の近くにある，シカルと呼ばれるサマリアの町に来た。
6 and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
ヤコブの井戸はここにあった。それでイエスは，旅のために疲れていたので，井戸のそばに座った。第六時ごろであった。
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
一人のサマリアの女が水をくみに来た。イエスは彼女に言った，「飲み水をくれないか」 。
8 For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.
弟子たちは食物を買いに町へ行っていたからである。
9 The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
それでサマリアの女は彼に言った，「ユダヤ人のあなたが，サマリア人の女のわたしから飲み水をお求めになるのはどうしてですか」。（ユダヤ人はサマリア人と商取り引きをしないからである。）
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
イエスは彼女に答えた，「あなたが神の贈り物と，『飲み水をくれないか』と言った者がだれなのかを知っていたなら，あなたは彼に求め，彼はあなたに命の水を与えたことだろう」 。
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
女は彼に言った，「だんな様，あなたはくむ物をお持ちでなく，この井戸は深いのです。それで，あなたはその生きた水をどこから手に入れられるのですか。
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
あなたは，わたしたちの父祖ヤコブよりも偉大なのですか。彼はわたしたちにこの井戸を与え，子供や牛がしたように自らもここから飲んだのです」。
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
イエスは彼女に答えた，「この水を飲む者はみな再び渇く。
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.
女は彼に言った，「だんな様，わたしにその水を下さい。わたしが渇くことがなく，ここにずっと水をくみに来なくてもよいようにするためです」。
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
イエスは彼女に言った，「あなたの夫を呼びに行って，ここに戻って来なさい」 。
17 The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband:
女は答えた，「わたしには夫がありません」。 イエスは彼女に言った，「『わたしには夫がない』とはよく言った。
18 for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.
あなたには五人の夫がいたが，今一緒にいる者は夫ではないからだ。それをあなたは正しく言った」 。
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
女は彼に言った，「だんな様，わたしはあなたが預言者だということが分かります。
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
わたしたちの父祖たちはこの山で崇拝しましたが，あなた方ユダヤ人は，人々が崇拝すべき場所はエルサレムにあると言います」。
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.
イエスは彼女に言った，「女よ，わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなた方がこの山でもエルサレムでもないところで，父を崇拝する時が来る。
22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know: for salvation is from the Jews.
あなた方は自分たちの知らないものを崇拝している。わたしたちは自分たちが知っているものを崇拝している。救いはユダヤ人から出るからだ。
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers.
だが，真の崇拝者が霊と真理をもって父を崇拝する時が来ている。今がその時だ。父はそのような人々を，ご自分の崇拝者になるために求めておられるからだ。
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
神は霊であられるので，その方を崇拝する人々は，霊と真理をもって崇拝しなければならない」 。
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (which is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.
女は彼に言った，「わたしはメシアが来られることを知っています」（メシアはキリストと呼ばれる）。「その方が来られるときに，わたしたちにすべての事柄を知らせてくださるでしょう」。
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he].
イエスは彼女に言った，「あなたに話しているわたしがその者だ」 。
27 And upon this came his disciples; and they marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
その時，弟子たちが戻って来た。彼らは，彼が女と話していることで驚き怪しんだ。しかし，「何を求めておられるのですか」とか，「なぜ彼女と話しておられるのですか」などと言う者はいなかった。
28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the men,
そこで，女は水がめを置いて，町に去って行き，人々に言った，
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that [ever] I did: can this be the Christ?
「来て，わたしのしたことを何もかも告げた人を見てください。この人がキリストではないでしょうか」。
30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
そこで彼らは町から出て，彼のもとへやって来た。
31 In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
その間に，弟子たちは「ラビ，召し上がってください」と言って，彼を促していた。
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not.
しかし彼は彼らに言った，「わたしには，あなた方の知らない，食べるべき食物がある」 。
33 The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him [aught] to eat?
それで弟子たちは互いに言い合った，「だれかが彼に食べる物を持って来たのだろうか」。
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.
イエスは彼らに言った，「わたしの食物とは，わたしを遣わした方のご意志を行ない，そのみ業を成し遂げることだ。
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.
あなた方は，『収穫までまだ四か月ある』と言うではないか。見よ，あなた方に言う。目を上げて，畑を見なさい。すでに収穫を待って白くなっている。
36 He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
刈り取る者は報酬を受け取って，永遠の命に至る実を集めている。種をまく者と刈り取る者とが共に喜ぶためだ。 (aiōnios g166)
37 For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
このことにおいて，『一人はまき，もう一人は刈り取る』ということわざは真実なのだ。
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not laboured: others have laboured, and ye are entered into their labour.
わたしは，自分たちが労苦しなかったものを刈り取らせるために，あなた方を遣わした。ほかの人たちが労苦したのであり，あなた方は彼らの労苦の実にあずかっているのだ」 。
39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that [ever] I did.
その町から来た大勢のサマリア人が，「この方はわたしのしたことを何もかも告げた」と証言した女のその言葉のゆえに，彼を信じた。
40 So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days.
そこでサマリア人たちは彼のもとにやって来ると，自分たちのところに滞在してくれるよう頼んだ。彼はそこに二日滞在した。
41 And many more believed because of his word;
彼の言葉のゆえに，さらに多くの人が信じた。
42 and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
彼らは女に言った，「わたしたちは，もはやあなたの話のゆえに信じるのではない。自分で聞いて，この方こそ確かにキリスト，世の救い主だと知ったからだ」。
43 And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee.
二日後，彼はそこから出発してガリラヤに入った。
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
イエス自身が，預言者は自分の故郷では誉れを得ないと証言したからである。
45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
そこでガリラヤに来ると，ガリラヤの人たちは彼を受け入れた。彼らも祭りに行ったので，彼が祭りの際にエルサレムで行なわれたすべての事柄を見ていたのである。
46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
それでイエスは再びガリラヤのカナに行った。水をブドウ酒に変えた所である。カペルナウムにある貴族がいて，その息子が病気であった。
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought [him] that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
イエスがユダヤからガリラヤに出て来たことを聞くと，彼はそのもとに行き，下って来て自分の息子をいやしてくれるように頼んだ。その息子が死にそうだったからである。
48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.
それでイエスは彼に言った，「あなた方は，しるしや不思議を見なければ，決して信じないだろう」 。
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
その貴族はイエスに言った，「主よ，わたしの子供が死ぬ前に下っていらしてください」。
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way.
イエスは彼に言った，「帰りなさい。あなたの息子は生きる」 。その人は，イエスが自分に話した言葉を信じて，帰って行った。
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived.
さて，下って行くと，その召使いたちが出迎えて報告し，「お子さんは生きています」と言った。
52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
そこで彼は，子供が良くなり始めた時刻を彼らに尋ねた。それで彼らは，「昨日の第七時に熱が引きました」と言った。
53 So the father knew that [it was] at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
それで父親は，それが，「あなたの息子は生きる」 とイエスが言ったその時刻であったことを知った。そこで，彼もその家の者たち全員も信じた。
54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judaea into Galilee.
これはまた，イエスがユダヤからガリラヤに出て来て行なわれた二番目のしるしである。
