John 4
1 When therefore the Lord knew how that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
Ayant su que les Pharisiens avaient ouï dire qu'il faisait plus de disciples et baptisait plus que Jean
2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),
(quoiqu'il ne baptisât pas lui-même; c'étaient ses disciples qui baptisaient),
3 he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
le Seigneur quitta la Judée et repartit pour la Galilée.
4 And he must needs pass through Samaria.
Il lui fallait alors traverser la Samarie.
5 So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph:
Il arriva donc à une ville de ce pays nommé Sychar, près de la terre que Jacob avait donnée à son fils Joseph.
6 and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Fatigué par le voyage, Jésus s'assit sur le puits; il était environ la sixième heure.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Survint pour puiser de l'eau une femme de la Samarie.«Donne-moi à boire», lui dit Jésus.
8 For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.
(Ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.)
9 The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
La femme samaritaine lui répondit: Comment me demandes-tu à boire, toi, qui es Juif, à moi qui suis Samaritaine?» (Les Juifs, en effet, n'ont point de rapports avec les Samaritains.)
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Jésus alors lui adressa ces paroles: «Si tu savais le don de Dieu, et quel est celui qui te dit: «Donne-moi à boire», tu lui ferais toi-même une telle demande, et il te donnerait de l'eau vive.»
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
«Seigneur, lui dit la femme, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond. D'où as-tu cette eau vive?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
Es-tu plus grand que notre père Jacob, lequel nous a donné ce puits, et qui y a bu lui-même ainsi que ses fils et ses troupeaux?»
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
Jésus lui répondit par ces paroles: «Quiconque boit de l'eau que voici aura soif de nouveau;
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.
«Seigneur, reprit la femme, donne-moi cette eau-là, pour que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus ici pour puiser.»
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
«Va appeler ton mari, lui dit Jésus, et reviens ici.»
17 The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband:
La femme répondit ainsi: «Je n'ai pas de mari.» Jésus repartit: «Tu as raison de dire: «je n'ai pas de mari»;
18 for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.
en effet, tu as eu cinq maris et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela, tu as dit vrai.»
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
«Seigneur, lui dit la femme, je vois que tu es prophète.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne-ci; et vous dites, vous, qu'à Jérusalem est le lieu où il faut adorer.»
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.
«Femme, crois-moi, lui dit Jésus, il vient une heure où ni sur cette montagne-ci, ni à Jérusalem vous n'adorerez le Père.
22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know: for salvation is from the Jews.
Vous adorez, vous, ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, parce que le salut vient des Juifs.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers.
Mais il vient une heure, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité; car ce sont de tels adorateurs que demande le Père;
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
Dieu est esprit, et il faut que ceux qui l'adorent, l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.»
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (which is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.
«Je sais, repartit la femme, qu'il va venir un Messie» — (ce mot signifie Christ). — «Quand il viendra, il nous apprendra tout.»
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he].
Jésus lui dit: «Je le suis, moi qui te parle.»
27 And upon this came his disciples; and they marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
En ce moment, arrivèrent ses disciples; ils furent surpris de ce qu'il parlait à une femme. Aucun d'eux pourtant ne lui dit: «Que lui demandes-tu?» ou: «Pourquoi t'entretiens-tu avec elle?»
28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the men,
Quant à celle-ci, laissant là sa cruche, elle partit pour la ville et dit aux uns et aux autres:
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that [ever] I did: can this be the Christ?
«Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait; ne serait-ce pas le Christ?»
30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
Ils sortirent de la ville, et ils allaient vers Jésus.
31 In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
Dans l'intervalle, les disciples insistaient auprès de lui et lui disaient: «Rabbi, mange.»
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not.
«J'ai pour me nourrir, leur répondit-il, un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas.»
33 The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him [aught] to eat?
Les disciples s'interrogeaient l'un l'autre: «Quelqu'un lui a-t-il apporté à manger?»
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.
«Ma nourriture, reprit Jésus, c'est de faire la volonté de Celui qui m'a envoyé, c'est d'accomplir son oeuvre.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.
Vous dites, n'est-ce pas, qu'il y a encore quatre mois avant la moisson. Eh bien! moi, je vous dis: levez les yeux et regardez ces campagnes, elles sont blanches pour la moisson.
36 He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
Déjà le moissonneur reçoit son salaire, et ramasse du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur se réjouisse en même temps que le moissonneur. (aiōnios g166)
37 For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
Ici se vérifie cette parole: autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not laboured: others have laboured, and ye are entered into their labour.
Je vous ai envoyé moissonner là où vous n'aviez point travaillé. D'autres ont travaillé et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travails.»
39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that [ever] I did.
Beaucoup de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui d'après le témoignage porté par cette femme: «Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.»
40 So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days.
Aussi ces Samaritains vinrent-ils le prier de s'arrêter chez eux. Jésus y passa deux jours;
41 And many more believed because of his word;
et un bien plus grand nombre encore crurent en lui, après avoir écouté sa parole.
42 and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
«Ce n'est plus sur ton récit que nous croyons, disaient-ils à la femme; car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons qu'il est vraiment le Sauveur du monde.»
43 And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee.
Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là et s'en alla en Galilée.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
Il est vrai qu'il avait lui-même déclaré que «dans sa propre patrie un prophète est sans honneur».
45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
Cependant quand il y arriva, les Galiléens l'accueillirent à cause de tout ce qu'ils lui avaient vu faire à Jérusalem pendant la fête à laquelle eux aussi avaient assisté.
46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Jésus se rendit aussi de nouveau à Cana de Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Or, il y avait à Capharnaüm un officier royal dont le fils était malade.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought [him] that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
Cet officier ayant appris que Jésus, venant de Judée, était arrivé dans le pays, alla le trouver et le pria de descendre à Capharnaüm pour guérir son fils, qui était mourant.
48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.
Jésus lui dit: «A moins d'avoir sous vos yeux des miracles et des prodiges vous ne croyez pas!» —
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
«Viens, Seigneur, reprit cet officier du roi, avant que mon enfant meure!» —
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way.
Jésus lui répondit: «Va, ton fils vit.» Cet homme crut à la parole que lui avait dite Jésus et s'en alla.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived.
Il était déjà en route lorsqu'il rencontra ses serviteurs qui lui annoncèrent que son enfant était vivant.
52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
Il leur demanda à quelle heure l'enfant s'était senti mieux. «Hier, répondirent-ils, à la septième heure la fièvre l'a quitté.»
53 So the father knew that [it was] at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
Le père constata que c'était à cette heure même que Jésus lui avait dit: «Ton fils vit.» Dès lors il devint croyant, ainsi que tous ceux de sa maison.
54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judaea into Galilee.
C'était un nouveau miracle, le second que fit Jésus à son retour de Judée en Galilée.
