< Job 15 >

1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
Pea naʻe toki tali ʻe Elifasi mei Timani, ʻo ne pehē,
2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
“He ʻoku taau mo e tangata poto ke lau meʻa vaʻinga, mo fakapito hono kete ʻaki ʻae matangi hahake?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
‌ʻOku taau ʻene leaʻaki ʻae lea taʻeʻaonga? Pe ko e ngaahi lau ʻe ʻikai te ne lavaʻi ʻaki ha lelei?
4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, and restrainest devotion before God.
‌ʻIo, ʻoku ke liʻaki ʻae manavahē, pea ke taʻofi ʻae lotu ʻi he ʻao ʻoe ʻOtua.
5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
He ʻoku lea ʻaki ʻe ho ngutu ʻa hoʻo angahala, ka ʻoku ke fili ki he ʻelelo ʻoe fakaoloolo.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
‌ʻOku talatalaakiʻi koe ʻe ho ngutu pe ʻoʻou, kae ʻikai ko au: ʻio, ko ho loungutu pe ʻoʻou ʻoku fakamoʻoni kiate koe.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
“He ko e ʻuluaki tangata koe naʻe fanauʻi? Pe naʻe fakatupu koe ʻi muʻa ʻi he ngaahi moʻunga?
8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
He kuo ke fanongo ʻe koe ki he meʻa fufū ʻae ʻOtua? Pea ʻoku ke fakangata ʻae poto kiate koe?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
Ko e hā ʻoku ke ʻilo, ka ʻoku ʻikai te mau ʻilo? Ko e hā ʻoku ke ʻilo pau, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai ʻiate kimautolu?
10 With us are both the grayheaded and the very aged men, much elder than thy father.
‌ʻOku ʻiate kimautolu ʻae ʻuluhinā mo e kau mātuʻa, ʻoku motuʻa lahi ʻi hoʻo tamai.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, and the word [that dealeth] gently with thee?
He ʻoku siʻi ʻae ngaahi fakafiemālie ʻae ʻOtua kiate koe? He ʻoku ai ha meʻa fakalilolilo ʻiate koe?
12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
Ko e hā ʻoku ʻāvea ai koe ʻe ho loto? Pea ʻoku lalama ho mata ʻi he hā.
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest [such] words go out of thy mouth.
Koeʻuhi ʻoku ke fakafoki ho loto ke tuʻu ki he ʻOtua, pea tuku ke tafe ʻae ngaahi lea ni mei ho ngutu?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
Ko e hā ʻae tangata, ke pehē ʻoku maʻa ia? Pe ha taha ʻoku fanauʻi ʻe he fefine, ke pehē ʻoku tonuhia ia?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
Vakai, ʻoku ʻikai falala siʻi ʻe ia ki heʻene kau māʻoniʻoni; ʻio, naʻa mo e ngaahi langi ʻoku ʻikai maʻa ia ʻi hono ʻao.
16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, a man that drinketh iniquity like water!
Ka ʻe fēfē hono lahi hake ʻoe fakalielia mo e ʻuli ʻoe tangata, ʻaia ʻoku ne inumia ʻae angahala ʻo hangē ha vai?
17 I will shew thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare:
“Te u fakahā kiate koe, fanongo kiate au; pea ko ia kuo u mamata ai te u fakamatala atu;
18 (Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it;
‌ʻAia naʻe tala ʻe he kakai poto mei heʻenau ngaahi tamai, ʻo ʻikai fufū ia:
19 Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them: )
‌ʻAkinautolu pē naʻe foaki ki ai ʻae fonua, pea naʻe ʻikai feʻaluʻaki ha muli ʻiate kinautolu.
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
‌ʻOku langa mamahi ʻae tangata angahala ʻi he ʻaho kotoa pē, pea ʻoku fufū mei he fakaaoao ʻae lau ʻoe ngaahi taʻu.
21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; in prosperity the spoiler shall come upon him:
Ko e ongo fakailifia ʻoku ʻi hono telinga: ʻi he lolotonga ʻo ʻene monūʻia ʻe hoko kiate ia ʻae fakaʻauha.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword:
‌ʻOku ʻikai ʻamanaki ʻe ia ke ne liu mai mei he fakapoʻuli, pea ʻoku talia ia ʻe he heletā.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand:
‌ʻOku ʻalu fano pe ia ʻo kumi ʻae mā, ʻo pehē, ‘Ko mā ia?’ ʻOku ne ʻilo ʻoku ofi ʻae ʻaho ʻoe fakapoʻuli.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle:
‌ʻE fakamanavahēʻi ia ʻe he mamahi mo e feinga; te na ikuna ia, ʻo hangē ha tuʻi kuo teu ki he tuʻa.
25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, and behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;
He ʻoku ne mafao atu hono nima ki he ʻOtua, ʻo ne fakamālohi ia ʻo tuʻu ki he Māfimafi.
26 He runneth upon him with a [stiff] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers:
‌ʻOku ne ʻohofi kiate ia, ʻio, ki hono kia, ki he ngaahi potu matolu ʻo hono sifa fatafata:
27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, and made collops of fat on his flanks;
Koeʻuhi ʻoku ne fai ke fuʻu pupula hono mata, pea ne fangapesi ke matolu ʻae ngako ʻi hono ngaahi potu.
28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, in houses which no man inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.
Ka ʻoku ne nofo ʻi he ngaahi kolo lala, ʻi he ngaahi fale ʻoku ʻikai nofo ai ha taha, ʻaia kuo tuʻutuʻuni ko e ngaahi tuʻunga veve.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth.
‌ʻE ʻikai koloaʻia ia, ʻe ʻikai tuʻumaʻu ʻene ngaahi meʻa, pea ʻe ʻikai te ne faʻa fai ke fakatolonga hono lelei ʻi he fonua.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
‌ʻE ʻikai ʻalu ia mei he fakapoʻuli; ʻe mangia ʻe he afi ʻa hono ngaahi vaʻa, pea ʻi he mānava ʻo hono fofonga ʻe mole atu ia.
31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself: for vanity shall be his recompence.
Ke ʻoua naʻa falala ia ʻaia kuo kākaaʻi ki he vaʻinga: ko hono totongi ko e vaʻinga pe.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
‌ʻE fakamoʻoni eni ʻi he teʻeki hoko hono ʻaho, pea ʻe ʻikai maʻuiʻui hono vaʻa.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
‌ʻE lulu ʻe ia ke tō hono fuhi kālepi taʻemomoho ʻo hangē pe ko e vaine, pea te ne fakamokulu hono fisi ʻo hangē pē ko e ʻolive.
34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
He koeʻuhi ʻe lala ʻae fakatahaʻanga ʻoe kau angahala, pea ʻe fakaʻauha ʻe he afi ʻae ngaahi fale naʻe maʻu ʻaki ʻae koloa kovi.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
‌ʻOku nau tuʻituʻia ʻi he pauʻu, pea nau fanauʻi ʻae vaʻinga, pea ʻoku teuteu ʻe honau loto ʻae kākā.
