Jeremiah 50
1 The word that the LORD spake concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.
La parole que prononça l'Éternel sur Babel et sur le pays des Chaldéens, par Jérémie, le prophète:
2 Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.
Annoncez-le parmi les peuples, et publiez-le, et dressez une bannière! Publiez, ne taisez rien, dites: Babel est prise, Bel confus, Mérodach atterré, ses idoles sont confondues, et ses faux dieux consternés!
3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast.
Car du nord un peuple marche sur elle: il fera de son pays un désert, où il n'y aura plus d'habitants; les hommes et les bêtes ont fui, sont partis.
4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek the LORD their God.
Dans ces jours et dans ce temps-là, dit l'Éternel, les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda reviendront tous ensemble; ils chemineront en pleurant [de joie], et ils chercheront l'Éternel, leur Dieu;
5 They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, [saying], Come ye, and join yourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten.
ils s'informeront de la route de Sion; là se tournent leurs regards: ils arrivent et s'attachent à l'Éternel par une alliance éternelle qui ne sera pas mise en oubli.
6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.
Mon peuple était un troupeau de brebis perdues; leurs bergers les avaient égarées et laissées errer dans les montagnes; elles couraient de montagne à colline, oubliant leur bercail.
7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers.
Quiconque les trouvait, les dévorait, et leurs ennemis disaient: Nous ne sommes point coupables! parce qu'ils avaient péché contre l'Éternel, le refuge fidèle, et l'espoir de leurs pères, l'Éternel.
8 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks.
Fuyez de Babel, et sortez du pays des Chaldéens, et soyez comme des béliers à la tête du troupeau;
9 For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain.
car voici, je fais lever et s'avancer contre Babel une masse de grands peuples du pays du nord; et ils se rangent en bataille contre elle; et c'est ainsi qu'elle sera prise. Leurs flèches sont celles d'un adroit guerrier; elles ne reviennent pas sans effet.
10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD.
La Chaldée devient un pillage, et tous ses spoliateurs seront rassasiés, dit l'Éternel.
11 Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder mine heritage, because ye are wanton as an heifer that treadeth out [the corn], and neigh as strong horses;
Car vous fûtes joyeux, car vous fûtes contents, spoliateurs de mon héritage! car vous vous êtes égayés comme le taureau qui foule le grain, et vous avez henni comme les étalons.
12 your mother shall be sore ashamed; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
Votre mère rougit fort, celle qui vous enfanta est toute confuse; voici la fin des nations, ravage, sécheresse et solitude.
13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
Par l'effet de la colère de l'Éternel, elle ne sera plus habitée, elle sera toute déserte; quiconque passera devant Babel, hochera la tête, et se rira de toutes ses plaies.
14 Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD.
Postez-vous tout autour de Babel, vous tous qui bandez l'arc; tirez contre elle, n'épargnez pas les flèches; car elle a péché contre l'Éternel!
15 Shout against her round about; she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD; take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
De tous les côtés poussez contre elle le cri de guerre. Elle tend les mains; ses fondements s'écroulent, ses murs tombent; car ce sont là les vengeances de l'Éternel. Vengez-vous sur elle! faites-lui ce qu'elle a fait.
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.
Exterminez de Babel le semeur, et celui qui manie la faucille au temps de la moisson. Devant la terrible épée chacun retournera vers son peuple, et chacun fuira dans son pays.
17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
Israël était une brebis égarée que le lion avait effarouchée. D'abord le roi d'Assyrie l'avait dévorée, et enfin Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, lui rongea les os.
18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria;
C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Voici, je châtierai le roi de Babel et son pays, comme je châtiai le roi d'Assyrie;
19 And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.
et je ramènerai Israël dans son pâturage pour qu'il paisse sur le Carmel et à Basan, et que sur les montagnes d'Éphraïm et en Galaad il rassasie son âme.
20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.
Dans ces jours et dans ce temps-là, dit l'Éternel, on cherchera le péché d'Israël, et il n'existera plus; et le crime de Juda, et il ne se trouvera plus; car je pardonnerai à ceux que je laisserai survivre.
21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
Monte contre le pays doublement rebelle, et contre les habitants à punir! Massacre et extermine-les, dit l'Éternel, et exécute tout ce que je t'ai commandé.
22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
Cri de guerre dans le pays et grand désastre!
23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
Comme il est mis en pièces et brisé, le marteau de toute la terre! Quelle solitude Babel est devenue au milieu des nations!
24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD.
Je tendis le filet contre toi, et tu t'y es prise, Babel, à l'improviste. Tu es atteinte et conquise, parce que tu as livré la guerre à l'Éternel.
25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for the Lord, the LORD of hosts, hath a work [to do] in the land of the Chaldeans.
L'Éternel ouvrit son arsenal, et en tira les armes de sa colère, car le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, a une œuvre à faire dans le pays des Chaldéens.
26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.
Marchez sur elle de toutes parts, ouvrez ses greniers, entassez-y comme des monceaux de blé, et mettez-la au ban, et qu'il n'y reste rien.
27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
Égorgez tous ses taureaux, qu'ils descendent à la tuerie! Malheur à eux, car leur jour est arrivé, le temps de leur châtiment!
28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple.
Les cris des fugitifs et de ceux qui se sauvent du pays de Babel, vont annoncer en Sion la vengeance de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, la vengeance de son temple.
29 Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; camp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
Appelez contre Babel les archers; vous tous qui bandez l'arc, campez autour d'elle; que personne n'échappe; rendez-lui selon ses œuvres, et tout ce qu'elle a fait, faites-le-lui; car elle résista orgueilleusement à l'Éternel, au Saint d'Israël.
30 Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith the LORD.
Aussi ses jeunes hommes tomberont dans ses rues, et tous ses guerriers seront détruits en ce jour, dit l'Éternel.
31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
Me voici, à mon tour! j'en veux à toi, orgueilleuse, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées; car ton jour est arrivé, le temps de ton châtiment.
32 And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him.
L'orgueilleuse trébuchera et tombera, et personne ne la relèvera, et j'allumerai un feu dans ses villes, qui dévorera tous ses alentours.
33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together: and all that took them captives hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda subissent l'oppression tous ensemble, et tous ceux qui les emmenèrent captifs, les retiennent, et refusent de les relâcher.
34 Their redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
Mais leur vengeur est puissant, l'Éternel des armées est son nom; Il défendra leur cause, pour donner le repos au pays, et troubler les habitants de Babel.
35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
L'épée fond sur les Chaldéens, dit l'Éternel, et sur les habitants de Babel, et sur ses princes et sur ses sages;
36 A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed.
l'épée fond sur les vains parleurs, et ils délirent;
37 A sword is upon their horse, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her, and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed.
l'épée fond sur ses guerriers, et ils sont atterrés; l'épée fond sur ses chevaux et sur ses chars, et sur tous les alliés qui sont chez elle, et ils deviennent des femmes; l'épée fond sur ses trésors, et ils sont pillés;
38 A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up: for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad upon idols.
la sécheresse envahit ses eaux, et elles tarissent; car c'est un pays d'idoles, ils font gloire de leurs faux dieux.
39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
C'est pourquoi il deviendra le gîte des bêtes du désert et des chacals, le gîte de l'autruche; jamais personne n'y habitera plus, et elle sera déserte dans tous les âges.
40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.
De même que Dieu renversa Sodome et Gomorrhe et les villes voisines, dit l'Éternel, de même personne n'y fixera son séjour, ni aucun homme sa demeure.
41 Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation, and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
Voici, un peuple arrive du nord, et une grande nation et beaucoup de rois se lèvent des bouts de la terre;
42 They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea, and they ride upon horses; every one set in array, as man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
ils manient l'arc et le javelot; ils sont cruels et sans pitié; leur voix comme la mer gronde, et sur des chevaux ils sont montés, rangés comme un seul homme en bataille contre toi, fille de Babel.
43 The king of Babylon hath heard the fame of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, [and] pangs as of a woman in travail.
Le roi de Babel en entend la rumeur, et ses mains faiblissent; les douleurs le prennent, les maux, comme la femme en travail.
44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of Jordan against the strong habitation: but I will suddenly make them run away from her; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over her: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?
Voici, tel qu'un lion, il monte des [bois], ornement du Jourdain, dans le pacage toujours vert; tout à coup Je les en chasserai, et J'y établirai comme chef celui que Je choisirai. Car qui est égal à moi? et qui m'assignera? et quel est le berger qui me résisterait?
45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, [even] the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
Aussi, entendez l'arrêt que l'Éternel arrête contre Babel, et les pensées qu'il médite contre le pays des Chaldéens: En vérité ils les traîneront comme de faibles agneaux, et dévasteront leur pâturage.
46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembleth, and the cry is heard among the nations.
A ce cri: « Babel est prise! » la terre tremble, et un gémissement retentit parmi les nations.
