Genesis 4
1 And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man with [the help of] the LORD.
人はその妻エバを知った。彼女はみごもり、カインを産んで言った、「わたしは主によって、ひとりの人を得た」。
2 And again she bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
彼女はまた、その弟アベルを産んだ。アベルは羊を飼う者となり、カインは土を耕す者となった。
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
日がたって、カインは地の産物を持ってきて、主に供え物とした。
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
アベルもまた、その群れのういごと肥えたものとを持ってきた。主はアベルとその供え物とを顧みられた。
5 but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
しかしカインとその供え物とは顧みられなかったので、カインは大いに憤って、顔を伏せた。
6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
そこで主はカインに言われた、「なぜあなたは憤るのですか、なぜ顔を伏せるのですか。
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
正しい事をしているのでしたら、顔をあげたらよいでしょう。もし正しい事をしていないのでしたら、罪が門口に待ち伏せています。それはあなたを慕い求めますが、あなたはそれを治めなければなりません」。
8 And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
カインは弟アベルに言った、「さあ、野原へ行こう」。彼らが野にいたとき、カインは弟アベルに立ちかかって、これを殺した。
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?
主はカインに言われた、「弟アベルは、どこにいますか」。カインは答えた、「知りません。わたしが弟の番人でしょうか」。
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
主は言われた、「あなたは何をしたのです。あなたの弟の血の声が土の中からわたしに叫んでいます。
11 And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
今あなたはのろわれてこの土地を離れなければなりません。この土地が口をあけて、あなたの手から弟の血を受けたからです。
12 when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.
あなたが土地を耕しても、土地は、もはやあなたのために実を結びません。あなたは地上の放浪者となるでしょう」。
13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
カインは主に言った、「わたしの罰は重くて負いきれません。
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that whosoever findeth me shall slay me.
あなたは、きょう、わたしを地のおもてから追放されました。わたしはあなたを離れて、地上の放浪者とならねばなりません。わたしを見付ける人はだれでもわたしを殺すでしょう」。
15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
主はカインに言われた、「いや、そうではない。だれでもカインを殺す者は七倍の復讐を受けるでしょう」。そして主はカインを見付ける者が、だれも彼を打ち殺すことのないように、彼に一つのしるしをつけられた。
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
カインは主の前を去って、エデンの東、ノドの地に住んだ。
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
カインはその妻を知った。彼女はみごもってエノクを産んだ。カインは町を建て、その町の名をその子の名にしたがって、エノクと名づけた。
18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methushael: and Methushael begat Lamech.
エノクにはイラデが生れた。イラデの子はメホヤエル、メホヤエルの子はメトサエル、メトサエルの子はレメクである。
19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
レメクはふたりの妻をめとった。ひとりの名はアダといい、ひとりの名はチラといった。
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and [have] cattle.
アダはヤバルを産んだ。彼は天幕に住んで、家畜を飼う者の先祖となった。
21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.
その弟の名はユバルといった。彼は琴や笛を執るすべての者の先祖となった。
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
チラもまたトバルカインを産んだ。彼は青銅や鉄のすべての刃物を鍛える者となった。トバルカインの妹をナアマといった。
23 And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me:
レメクはその妻たちに言った、「アダとチラよ、わたしの声を聞け、レメクの妻たちよ、わたしの言葉に耳を傾けよ。わたしは受ける傷のために、人を殺し、受ける打ち傷のために、わたしは若者を殺す。
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
カインのための復讐が七倍ならば、レメクのための復讐は七十七倍」。
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For, [said she], God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.
アダムはまたその妻を知った。彼女は男の子を産み、その名をセツと名づけて言った、「カインがアベルを殺したので、神はアベルの代りに、ひとりの子をわたしに授けられました」。
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
セツにもまた男の子が生れた。彼はその名をエノスと名づけた。この時、人々は主の名を呼び始めた。
