2 Kings 18
1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
La troisième année d'Hosée, fils d'Éla, roi d'Israël, Ezéchias, fils d'Achaz, roi de Juda, devint roi.
2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.
Il avait vingt-cinq ans à son avènement et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem. Or le nom de sa mère était Abi, fille de Zacharie.
3 And he did that which was right hi the eyes of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.
Et il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Éternel, en tout point comme David, son père, avait fait.
4 He removed the high places, and brake the pillars, and cut down the Asherah: And he brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made; for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.
Lui il abolit les tertres, et brisa les colonnes et extirpa les Aschères, et mit en pièces le serpent d'airain qu'avait fait Moïse; car jusqu'à cette époque les enfants d'Israël l'avaient encensé, et on l'appelait Nehustan (serpent d'airain).
5 He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor [among them] that were before him.
C'est dans l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qu'il mit sa confiance et après lui il n'y eut pas son pareil entre tous les rois de Juda, non plus que parmi ses prédécesseurs.
6 For he clave to the LORD, he departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
Et il fut attaché à l'Éternel: il ne Le déserta point, et il garda ses commandements, que l'Éternel avait prescrits à Moïse.
7 And the LORD was with him; whithersoever he went forth he prospered: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
Et l'Éternel fut avec lui: il réussit dans toutes ses expéditions. Et il rompit avec le roi d'Assyrie et ne fut point dans sa dépendance.
8 He smote the Philistines unto Gaza and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
Il battit les Philistins jusqu'à Gaza et [ravagea] leur territoire depuis la tour d'observation aux villes fortes.
9 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.
Et la quatrième année du roi Ezéchias, qui est la septième année d'Hosée, fils d'Éla, roi d'Israël, Salmanassar, roi d'Assyrie, s'avança contre Samarie et l'assiégea,
10 And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
et s'en empara au bout de trois ans: ce fut la sixième année d'Ezéchias, c'est-à-dire, la neuvième année d'Hosée, roi d'Israël, que Samarie fut prise.
11 And the king of Assyria carried Israel away unto Assyria, and put them in Halah, and in Habor, [on] the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
Et et roi d'Assyrie déporta les Israélites en Assyrie et les établit à Halah et au Chabor, fleuve de Gozan, et dans les villes des Mèdes,
12 because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.
parce qu'ils n'avaient pas écouté la voix de l'Éternel, leur Dieu, et qu'ils avaient transgressé son alliance: tout ce qu'avait prescrit Moïse, serviteur de l'Éternel, ils ne l'avaient ni écouté, ni fait.
13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
La quatorzième année du roi Ezéchias, Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, s'avança contre toutes les villes fortes de Juda, et s'en empara.
14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
Alors Ezéchias, roi de Juda, dépêcha vers le roi d'Assyrie à Lachis pour lui dire: J'ai forfait! retire-toi de chez moi et je subirai ce que tu m'imposeras. Et le roi d'Assyrie imposa à Ezéchias, roi de Juda, trois cents talents d'argent et trente talents d'or.
15 And Hezekiah gave [him] all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house.
Et Ezéchias délivra tout l'argent qui se trouvait dans le temple de l'Éternel et dans les trésors du palais royal.
16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off [the gold from] the doors of the temple of the LORD, and [from] the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
Dans cette circonstance Ezéchias coupa les portes du temple de l'Éternel et leurs cadres qu'avait plaqués Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et les remit au roi d'Assyrie.
17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army unto Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.
Néanmoins le roi d'Assyrie envoya Tharthan et Rabsaris et Rabsaké de Lachis contre le roi Ezéchias avec des forces considérables à Jérusalem: et ils s'avancèrent et arrivèrent à Jérusalem; et quand on se fut avancé et qu'on fut arrivé, ils se placèrent à l'aqueduc de l'étang supérieur qui est sur le chemin du champ du foulon.
18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
Et ils appelèrent le roi. Alors sortit vers eux Eliakim, fils d'Hilkia, préfet du palais, et Sebna, le Secrétaire, et Joah, fils d'Asaph, le Chancelier.
19 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
Et Rabsaké leur dit: Allez dire à Ezéchias: Ainsi parle le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie: Qu'est-ce que cette confiance où tu mets ton appui?
20 Thou sayest, but they are but vain words, [There is] counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me?
Tu dis (pur vain parler): J'ai pour faire la guerre conseil et bravoure. Eh bien! sur qui as-tu mis ton appui pour rompre avec moi?
21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
Eh bien! voilà que tu t'appuies sur ce roseau cassé, sur l'Egypte, lequel perce la main de qui s'en étaie: tel est Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui s'appuient sur lui.
22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
Que si vous me dites: C'est dans l'Éternel, notre Dieu, que nous nous confions; n'est-ce pas lui dont Ezéchias a aboli les tertres et les autels, et Ezéchias qui a dit à Juda et à Jérusalem: Devant cet autel vous adorerez à Jérusalem?
23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Maintenant donc fais un accord avec mon Maître, le roi d'Assyrie, et je te donnerai deux mille chevaux,
24 How then canst thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
si tu peux te donner les cavaliers pour les monter. Et comment repousserais-tu un seul général des moindres serviteurs de mon Maître? mais tu te confies dans l'Egypte pour chars et cavaliers!
25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
Hé! est-ce sans l'Éternel que je me suis avancé jusqu'à cette place pour la saccager? L'Éternel m'a dit: Marche contre ce pays-là et le saccage!
26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not with us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Et Eliakim, fils d'Hilkia, et Sebna et Joah dirent à Rabsaké: Parle donc à tes serviteurs dans la langue syrienne que nous comprenons et ne nous parle pas dans la langue juive aux oreilles de ce peuple qui est sur la muraille.
27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? [hath he not sent me] to the men which sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?
Et Rabsaké leur dit: Est-ce à ton maître et à toi que mon Maître m'a envoyé porter ces paroles? n'est-ce pas aux gens assis sur la muraille pour manger leurs excréments et boire leur urine avec vous?
28 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear ye the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Se présentant alors, Rabsaké cria d'une voix forte en langue juive, et parla et dit: Écoutez la parole du grand roi, roi d'Assyrie!
29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
Ainsi parle le roi: Qu'Ezéchias ne vous abuse pas, car il ne saurait vous sauver de ma main.
30 neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Et qu'Ezéchias ne vous fasse pas avoir confiance dans l'Éternel en disant: L'Éternel veut nous sauver et cette ville-ci ne sera point livrée aux mains du roi d'Assyrie.
31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
N'écoutez pas Ezéchias! car ainsi parle le roi d'Assyrie: Faites amitié avec moi et passez de mon côté; et vous jouirez chacun de sa vigne, et chacun de son figuier, et vous vous désaltérerez chacun à l'eau de sa citerne,
32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
jusqu'à ce que je vienne pour vous emmener dans un pays pareil à votre pays, dans un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes, un pays d'oliviers à huile, et de miel, et vous vivrez et ne mourrez pas. N'écoutez donc pas Ezéchias, quand il vous leurre en disant: L'Éternel nous sauvera.
33 Hath any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
Les dieux des nations ont-ils, l'un ou l'autre, sauvé son pays de la main du roi d'Assyrie?
34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
Où sont les dieux de Hamath ou d'Arpad? Où les dieux de Sepharvaïm, Héna et Ivva, pour sauver Samarie de ma main?
35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
Quels sont parmi tous les dieux des États ceux qui ont sauvé leur État de ma main pour croire que l'Éternel sauvera Jérusalem de ma main?
36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
Et le peuple fut muet et ne lui répondit mot, car tel était l'ordre du roi qui avait dit: Ne répondez pas!
37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah, with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
Et Eliakim, fils d'Hilkia, préfet du palais, et Sebna, le Secrétaire, et Joah, fils d'Asaph, le Chancelier, se présentèrent à Ezéchias, les habits déchirés, et lui redirent les discours de Rabsaké.
