Titus 1

1 From Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, on behalf of the faith of God’s chosen people, and their knowledge of that truth which makes for godliness

Paulus, Knecht Gottes, aber Apostel Jesu Christi, nach dem Glauben der Auserwählten Gottes und nach der Erkenntnis der Wahrheit, die nach der Gottseligkeit ist,

2 – and is based on the hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began, (aiōnios g166)

in der Hoffnung des ewigen Lebens, welches Gott, der nicht lügen kann, verheißen hat vor ewigen Zeiten, (aiōnios g166)

3 and has revealed at his own time in his message, with the preaching of which I was entrusted by the command of God our Saviour.

zu seiner Zeit aber sein Wort geoffenbart hat durch die Predigt, die mir anvertraut worden ist nach Befehl unseres Heilandgottes

4 To Titus, my true child in our shared faith: May God, the Father, and Christ Jesus, our Saviour, bless you and give you peace.

Titus, meinem echten Kinde nach unserem gemeinschaftlichen Glauben: Gnade und Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und Christo Jesu, unserem Heilande!

5 My reason for leaving you in Crete was that you might put in order what had been left unfinished, and appoint church elders in the various towns, as I myself directed you.

Deswegen ließ ich dich in Kreta, daß du, was noch mangelte, in Ordnung bringen und in jeder Stadt Älteste anstellen möchtest, wie ich dir geboten hatte:

6 They are to be of irreproachable character, faithful to their partners, whose children are believers in Christ and have never been open to the charge of being wild or unruly.

Wenn jemand untadelig ist, eines Weibes Mann, der gläubige Kinder hat, die nicht eines ausschweifenden Lebens beschuldigt oder zügellos sind.

7 For a supervisor, as God’s steward, ought to be of blameless character – not arrogant or quick-tempered, not given to drunkeness, violence or shady money-making.

Denn der Aufseher muß untadelig sein als Gottes Verwalter, nicht eigenmächtig, nicht zornmütig, nicht dem Wein ergeben, nicht ein Schläger, nicht schändlichem Gewinn nachgehend,

8 Instead, they should be hospitable, love what is good, self-controlled, upright, people of holy life and disciplined,

sondern gastfrei, das Gute liebend, besonnen, gerecht, fromm, enthaltsam,

9 holding firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught – so that they may be able to encourage others by sound teaching, as well as to refute those who contradict it.

anhangend dem zuverlässigen Worte nach der Lehre, auf daß er fähig sei, sowohl mit der gesunden Lehre zu ermahnen, als auch die Widersprechenden zu überführen.

10 For there are many undisciplined persons who lead others astray with their nonsense, especially those of the group advocating the necessity of circumcision.

Denn es gibt viele zügellose Schwätzer und Betrüger, besonders die aus der Beschneidung,

11 They need to be kept quiet as they disrupt whole households by teaching what they ought not to teach, simply to make shameful financial gain.

denen man den Mund stopfen muß, welche ganze Häuser umkehren, indem sie um schändlichen Gewinnes willen lehren, was sich nicht geziemt.

12 It was a Cretan – one of their own prophets – who said: “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons.” This statement is true.

Es hat einer aus ihnen, ihr eigener Prophet, gesagt: “Kreter sind immer Lügner, böse, wilde Tiere, faule Bäuche”.

13 Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,

Dieses Zeugnis ist wahr; um dieser Ursache willen weise sie streng zurecht, auf daß sie gesund seien im Glauben

14 and may pay no attention to Jewish legends, or to the directions of those who turn their backs on the truth.

und nicht achten auf jüdische Fabeln und Gebote von Menschen, die sich von der Wahrheit abwenden.

15 To those whose minds are pure, all things are ritually pure, but to those whose minds are tainted and unbelieving nothing is pure, as their minds and consciences are alike polluted.

Den Reinen ist alles rein; den Befleckten aber und Ungläubigen ist nichts rein, sondern befleckt ist sowohl ihre Gesinnung, als auch ihr Gewissen.

16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable and disobedient and useless for any good work.

Sie geben vor, Gott zu kennen, aber in den Werken verleugnen sie ihn und sind greulich und ungehorsam und zu jedem guten Werke unbewährt.
