< Psalms 41 >

1 For the leader; for Jeduthun. A psalm of David. Happy are those who consider the weak; in the day of misfortune the Lord will deliver them.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in the time of trouble.
2 He will keep them safe, happy, and long in the land, and not give them up to the rage of their foes.
The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him to the will of his enemies.
3 The Lord will sustain them on bed of languishing; tending their sickness, as long as they lie.
The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
4 For this cause I say, ‘Lord, show me your favour; heal me, because I have sinned against you.’
I said, LORD, be merciful to me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.
5 My enemies speak of me nothing but evil, ‘When will he die, and his name pass away?’
My enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?
6 When one comes to see me, their words ring hollow; their heart keeps gathering mischief the while; and when they go out, they give it speech.
And if he cometh to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.
7 In secret they whisper together against me, all those who hate me plot evil against me.
All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.
8 ‘Some fatal disease has fastened upon him; and now that he lies, he will rise up no more.’
An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast to him: and now that he lieth he shall rise no more.
9 My most trusted friend, on whom I relied, who ate of my bread, has turned against me.
Yea, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
10 But do you, Lord, graciously raise me up, that I may pay them their due reward.
But thou, O LORD, be merciful to me, and raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 By this will I know you delight in me: if my foes may not shout over me in triumph.
By this I know that thou favourest me, because my enemy doth not triumph over me.
12 For my innocence you uphold me, and set me forever before your face.
And as for me, thou upholdest me in my integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.
13 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting, Amen and Amen.
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.
