Matthew 8
1 When Jesus had come down from the hill, great crowds followed him.
Et quand il fut descendu de la montagne, de grandes foules le suivirent.
2 He saw a leper who came up, and bowed to the ground before him, and said, ‘Master, if only you are willing, you are able to make me clean.’
Et voici, un lépreux s’approchant, se prosterna devant lui, disant: Seigneur, si tu veux, tu peux me rendre net.
3 Stretching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying as he did so, ‘I am willing; become clean.’ Instantly he was made clean from his leprosy;
Et [Jésus], étendant la main, le toucha, disant: Je veux, sois net. Et aussitôt il fut nettoyé de sa lèpre.
4 and then Jesus said to him, ‘Be careful not to say a word to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift directed by Moses, as evidence of your cure.’
Et Jésus lui dit: Prends garde de ne le dire à personne; mais va, montre-toi au sacrificateur et offre le don que Moïse a ordonné, pour qu’il leur serve de témoignage.
5 After Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion in the Roman army came up to him, entreating his help.
Et comme il entrait dans Capernaüm, un centurion vint à lui, le suppliant,
6 ‘Sir,’ he said, ‘my manservant is lying ill at my house with a stroke of paralysis, and is suffering terribly.’
et disant: Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché à la maison, atteint de paralysie, horriblement tourmenté.
7 ‘I will come and cure him,’ answered Jesus.
Et Jésus lui dit: J’irai, moi, et je le guérirai.
8 ‘Sir,’ the centurion went on, ‘I am unworthy to receive you under my roof; but only speak, and my manservant will be cured.
Et le centurion répondit et dit: Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit; mais dis seulement une parole, et mon serviteur sera guéri;
9 For I myself am a man under the orders of others, with soldiers under me; and, if I say to one of them “Go,” he goes, and to another “Come,” he comes, and to my slave “Do this,” he does it.’
car moi aussi, je suis un homme placé sous l’autorité [d’autrui], ayant sous moi des soldats; et je dis à l’un: Va, et il va; et à un autre: Viens, et il vient; et à mon esclave: Fais cela, et il le fait.
10 Jesus was surprised to hear this, and said to those who were following him, ‘Never I tell you, in any Israelite have I met with such faith as this!
Et Jésus, l’ayant entendu, s’en étonna, et dit à ceux qui [le] suivaient: En vérité, je vous dis: je n’ai pas trouvé, même en Israël, une si grande foi.
11 Yes, and many will come in from East and West and take their places beside Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven;
Et je vous dis que plusieurs viendront d’orient et d’occident, et s’assiéront avec Abraham et Isaac et Jacob dans le royaume des cieux;
12 while the heirs to the kingdom will be banished into the darkness outside; there, there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’
mais les fils du royaume seront jetés dans les ténèbres de dehors: là seront les pleurs et les grincements de dents.
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go now, and it will be according to your faith.’ And the man was cured that very hour.
Et Jésus dit au centurion: Va, et qu’il te soit fait comme tu as cru; et à cette heure-là son serviteur fut guéri.
14 When Jesus went into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law prostrated with fever.
Et Jésus, étant venu dans la maison de Pierre, vit la belle-mère de Pierre couchée là et ayant la fièvre;
15 On his taking her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and began to take care of him.
et il lui toucha la main, et la fièvre la quitta; et elle se leva et le servit.
16 In the evening the people brought to Jesus many who were possessed by demons; and he drove out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were ill,
Et le soir étant venu, on lui apporta beaucoup de démoniaques; et il chassa les esprits par [une] parole, et guérit tous ceux qui se portaient mal;
17 in fulfilment of these words in the prophet Isaiah – “He took our infirmities on himself, and bore the burden of our diseases.”
en sorte que fût accompli ce qui a été dit par Ésaïe le prophète, disant: « Lui-même a pris nos langueurs, et a porté nos maladies ».
18 Seeing a crowd round him, Jesus gave orders to go across.
Or Jésus, voyant de grandes foules autour de lui, commanda de passer à l’autre rive.
19 A teacher of the Law came up to him, and said, ‘Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.’
Et un scribe s’approchant, lui dit: Maître, je te suivrai où que tu ailles.
20 ‘Foxes have holes,’ answered Jesus, ‘and wild birds their nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
Et Jésus lui dit: Les renards ont des tanières, et les oiseaux du ciel ont des demeures; mais le fils de l’homme n’a pas où reposer sa tête.
21 ‘Master,’ said another, who was a disciple, ‘let me first go and bury my father.’
Et un autre de ses disciples lui dit: Seigneur, permets-moi de m’en aller premièrement et d’ensevelir mon père.
22 But Jesus answered, ‘Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.’
Mais Jésus lui dit: Suis-moi, et laisse les morts ensevelir leurs morts.
23 Then he got into the boat, followed by his disciples.
Et quand il fut monté dans le bateau, ses disciples le suivirent;
24 Suddenly so great a storm came up on the sea, that the waves broke right over the boat. But Jesus was asleep;
et voici, une grande tourmente s’éleva sur la mer, en sorte que le bateau était couvert par les vagues; mais lui dormait.
25 and the disciples came and roused him. ‘Master,’ they cried, ‘save us; we are lost!’
Et les disciples s’approchèrent et le réveillèrent, disant: Seigneur, sauve-[nous]! nous périssons.
26 ‘Why are you so timid?’ he said. ‘You of little faith!’ Then Jesus rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and a great calm followed.
Et il leur dit: Pourquoi êtes-vous craintifs, gens de petite foi? Alors, s’étant levé, il reprit les vents et la mer, et il se fit un grand calme.
27 The men were amazed, and exclaimed, ‘What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!’
Et les gens s’en étonnèrent, disant: Quel est celui-ci, que les vents même et la mer lui obéissent!
28 On getting to the other side – the region of the Gadarenes – Jesus met two men who were possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one was able to pass that way.
Et quand il arriva à l’autre rive, dans le pays des Gergéséniens, deux démoniaques, sortant des sépulcres, vinrent à sa rencontre; [et ils étaient] très violents, en sorte que personne ne pouvait passer par ce chemin-là.
29 Suddenly they shrieked out, ‘What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before our time?’
Et voici, ils s’écrièrent, disant: Qu’y a-t-il entre nous et toi Jésus, Fils de Dieu? Es-tu venu ici avant le temps pour nous tourmenter?
30 A long way off, there was a herd of many pigs, feeding;
Et il y avait, loin d’eux, un grand troupeau de pourceaux qui paissait.
31 and the foul spirits began begging Jesus, ‘If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’
Et les démons le priaient, disant: Si tu nous chasses, permets-nous de nous en aller dans le troupeau des pourceaux.
32 ‘Go,’ he said. The spirits came out, and entered the pigs; and the whole herd rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and died in the water.
Et il leur dit: Allez. Et eux, sortant, s’en allèrent dans le troupeau des pourceaux; et voici, tout le troupeau des pourceaux se rua du haut de la côte dans la mer; et ils moururent dans les eaux.
33 At this the men who tended them ran away and went to the town, carrying the news of all that had occurred, and of what had happened to the possessed men.
Et ceux qui les paissaient s’enfuirent; et, s’en étant allés dans la ville, ils racontèrent tout, et ce qui était arrivé aux démoniaques.
34 At the news the whole town went out to meet Jesus, and, when they saw him, they entreated him to go away from their region.
Et voici, toute la ville sortit au-devant de Jésus; et l’ayant vu, ils le prièrent de se retirer de leur territoire.
