Matthew 26
1 When Jesus had finished teaching all of that, he said to his disciples,
Jésus ayant achevé tous ces discours, dit à ses disciples:
2 ‘You know that in two days time the Festival of the Passover will be here; and that the Son of Man is to be given up to be crucified.’
« Vous savez que la Pâque a lieu dans deux jours, et que le Fils de l’homme va être livré pour être crucifié. »
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people met in the house of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
Alors les Princes des prêtres et les Anciens du peuple se réunirent dans la cour du grand-prêtre, appelé Caïphe,
4 and plotted together to arrest Jesus by stealth and put him to death;
et ils délibérèrent sur les moyens de s’emparer de Jésus par ruse et de le faire mourir.
5 but they said, ‘Not during the Festival, or the people may riot.’
« Mais, disaient-ils, il ne faut pas que ce soit pendant la fête, de peur qu’il ne s’élève quelque tumulte parmi le peuple. »
6 After Jesus had reached Bethany, and while he was in the house of Simon the leper,
Comme Jésus était à Béthanie, dans la maison de Simon le lépreux,
7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster jar of very costly perfume, and poured the perfume on his head as he sat at the table.
une femme s’approcha de lui, avec un vase d’albâtre contenant un parfum de grand prix; et pendant qu’il était à table, elle répandit le parfum sur sa tête.
8 The disciples were indignant at seeing this. ‘What is this waste for?’ they exclaimed.
Ce que voyant, les disciples dirent avec indignation: « À quoi bon cette perte?
9 ‘It could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to poor people.’
On aurait pu vendre ce parfum très cher et en donner le prix aux pauvres. »
10 ‘Why are you troubling the woman?’ Jesus said, when he noticed it. ‘For this is a beautiful deed that she has done to me.
Jésus, s’en étant aperçu, leur dit: « Pourquoi faites-vous de la peine à cette femme? C’est une bonne action qu’elle a faite à mon égard.
11 You always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
Car vous avez toujours les pauvres avec vous; mais moi, vous ne m’avez pas toujours.
12 In pouring this perfume on my body, she prepares me for my burial.
En répandant ce parfum sur mon corps, elle l’a fait pour ma sépulture.
13 I tell you, wherever, in the whole world, this good news is proclaimed, what this woman has done will be told in memory of her.’
Je vous le dis, en vérité, partout où sera prêché cet évangile, dans le monde entier, ce qu’elle a fait sera raconté en mémoire d’elle. »
14 It was then that one of the Twelve, named Judas Iscariot, made his way to the chief priests,
Alors l’un des Douze, appelé Judas Iscariote, alla trouver les Princes des prêtres,
15 and said ‘What are you willing to give me, if I betray Jesus to you?’ The Priests counted him out thirty pieces of silver as payment.
et leur dit: « Que voulez-vous me donner, et je vous le livrerai? » Et ils lui comptèrent trente pièces d’argent.
16 So from that time Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
Depuis ce moment, il cherchait une occasion favorable pour livrer Jésus.
17 On the first day of the Festival of the unleavened bread, the disciples came up to Jesus, and said, ‘Where do you wish us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?’
Le premier jour des Azymes, les disciples vinrent trouver Jésus, et lui dirent: « Où veux-tu que nous préparions le repas pascal? »
18 ‘Go into the city to a certain man,’ he answered, ‘and say to him “The teacher says – My time is near. I will keep the Passover with my disciples at your house.”’
Jésus leur répondit: « Allez à la ville chez un tel, et dites-lui: Le Maître te fait dire: Mon temps est proche, je ferai chez toi la Pâque avec mes disciples. »
19 The disciples did as Jesus directed them, and prepared the Passover.
Les disciples firent ce que Jésus leur avait commandé, et ils préparèrent la Pâque.
20 In the evening Jesus took his place with the twelve disciples,
Le soir étant venu, il se mit à table avec les Douze.
21 and, while they were eating, he said, ‘I tell you that one of you will betray me.’
Pendant qu’ils mangeaient, il dit: « Je vous le dis en vérité, l’un de vous me trahira. »
22 In great grief they began to say to him, one by one, ‘Can it be I, Master?’
Ils en furent profondément attristés et chacun se mit à lui dire: « Est-ce moi, Seigneur? »
23 ‘The one who dipped his bread beside me in the dish,’ replied Jesus, ‘is the one who will betray me.
Il répondit: « Celui qui a mis avec moi la main au plat, celui-là me trahira!
24 True, the Son of Man must go, as scripture says of him, yet alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is being betrayed! For that man it would be better never to have been born!’
Le Fils de l’homme s’en va selon ce qui est écrit de lui; mais malheur à l’homme par qui le Fils de l’homme est trahi! Mieux vaudrait pour lui que cet homme-là ne fût pas né. »
25 Judas, who was betraying him, turned to him and said, ‘Can it be I, Rabbi?’ ‘It is,’ answered Jesus.
Judas, qui le trahissait, prit la parole et dit: « Est-ce moi, Maître? » — « Tu l’as dit, » répondit Jésus.
26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and, after saying the blessing, broke it and, as he gave it to his disciples, said, ‘Take it and eat it; this is my body.’
Pendant le repas, Jésus prit le pain; et, ayant prononcé une bénédiction, il le rompit et le donna à ses disciples, en disant: « Prenez et mangez, ceci est mon corps. »
27 Then he took a cup, and, after saying the thanksgiving, gave it to them, with the words, ‘Drink from it, all of you;
Il prit ensuite la coupe, et, ayant rendu grâces, il la leur donna en disant: « Buvez-en tous:
28 for this is my covenant blood, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
car ceci est mon sang, le sang de la nouvelle alliance, répandu pour la multitude en rémission des péchés.
29 I tell you that I will never, after this, drink of this juice of the grape, until that day when I will drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.’
Je vous le dis, je ne boirai plus désormais de ce fruit de la vigne, jusqu’au jour où je le boirai nouveau avec vous dans le royaume de mon Père. »
30 They then sang a hymn, and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Après le chant de l’hymne, ils s’en allèrent au mont des Oliviers.
31 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Even you will all fall away from me tonight. Scripture says – “I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.”
Alors Jésus leur dit: « Je vous serai à tous, cette nuit, une occasion de chute; car il est écrit: Je frapperai le pasteur, et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées.
32 But, after I have risen, I will go before you into Galilee.’
Mais après que je serai ressuscité, je vous précéderai en Galilée. »
33 ‘If everyone else falls away from you,’ Peter answered, ‘I will never fall away!’
Pierre, prenant la parole, lui dit: « Quand tu serais pour tous une occasion de chute, tu ne le seras jamais pour moi. »
34 ‘I tell you,’ replied Jesus, ‘that this very night, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times!’
Jésus lui dit: « Je te le dis en vérité, cette nuit-même, avant que le coq chante, tu me renieras trois fois. »
35 ‘Even if I must die with you,’ Peter exclaimed, ‘I will never disown you!’ All the disciples spoke in the same way.
Pierre lui répondit: « Quand il me faudrait mourir avec toi, je ne te renierai pas. » Et tous les autres disciples dirent de même.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a garden called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit down here while I go and pray over there.’
Alors Jésus arriva avec eux dans un domaine appelé Gethsémani, et il dit à ses disciples: « Asseyez-vous ici, pendant que je m’éloignerai pour prier. »
37 Taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to show signs of sadness and deep distress of mind.
Ayant pris avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée, il commença à éprouver de la tristesse et de l’angoisse.
38 ‘I am sad at heart,’ he said, ‘sad even to death; wait here and watch with me.’
Et il leur dit: « Mon âme est triste jusqu’à la mort; demeurez ici et veillez avec moi. »
39 Going on a little further, he threw himself on his face in prayer. ‘My Father,’ he said, ‘if it is possible, let me be spared this cup; only, not as I will, but as you will.’
Et s’étant un peu avancé, il se prosterna la face contre terre, priant et disant: « Mon Père, s’il est possible, que ce calice passe loin de moi! Cependant, non pas comme je veux, mais comme tu veux. »
40 Then he came to his disciples, and found them asleep. ‘What!’ he said to Peter, ‘could none of you watch with me for one hour?
Il vint ensuite à ses disciples, et, les trouvant endormis, il dit à Pierre: « Ainsi, vous n’avez pu veiller une heure avec moi!
41 Watch and pray so that you don’t fall into temptation. True, the spirit is eager, but human nature is weak.’
Veillez et priez, afin que vous n’entriez pas en tentation; l’esprit est prompt, mais la chair est faible. »
42 Again, a second time, he went away, and prayed. ‘My Father,’ he said, ‘if I cannot be spared this cup, but must drink it, your will be done!’
Il s’éloigna une seconde fois et pria ainsi: « Mon Père, si ce calice ne peut passer sans que je le boive, que ta volonté soit faite! »
43 And coming back again he found them asleep, for their eyes were heavy.
Étant venu de nouveau, il les trouva encore endormis, car leurs yeux étaient appesantis.
44 So he left them, and went away again, and prayed a third time, again saying the same words.
Il les laissa, et s’en alla encore prier pour la troisième fois, disant les mêmes paroles.
45 Then he came to the disciples, and said, ‘Sleep on now, and rest yourselves. Look – my time is close at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of wicked people.
Puis il revint à ses disciples et leur dit: « Dormez maintenant et reposez-vous; voici que l’heure est proche, où le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des pécheurs. —
46 Up, and let us be going. Look! My betrayer is close at hand.’
Levez-vous, allons, celui qui me trahit est près d’ici. »
47 And, while he was still speaking, Judas, who was one of the Twelve, came in sight; and with him was a great crowd of people, with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Il parlait encore, lorsque Judas, l’un des Douze, arriva, et avec lui une troupe nombreuse de gens armés d’épées et de bâtons, envoyée par les Princes des prêtres et les Anciens du peuple.
48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them. ‘The man whom I kiss,’ he had said, ‘will be the one; arrest him.’
Le traître leur avait donné ce signe: « Celui que je baiserai, c’est lui, arrêtez-le. »
49 So he went up to Jesus at once, and exclaimed, ‘Welcome, Rabbi!’ and kissed him;
Et aussitôt, s’approchant de Jésus, il dit: « Salut, Maître », et il le baisa.
50 at which Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you have come for.’ The men went up, seized Jesus, and arrested him.
Jésus lui dit: « Mon ami, pourquoi es-tu ici? » En même temps, ils s’avancèrent, mirent la main sur Jésus et le saisirent.
51 Suddenly one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and striking the high priest’s servant, cut off his ear.
Et voilà qu’un de ceux qui étaient avec Jésus, mettant l’épée à la main, en frappa le serviteur du grand prêtre et lui emporta l’oreille.
52 ‘Sheathe your sword,’ Jesus said, ‘for all who draw the sword will be put to the sword.
Alors Jésus lui dit: « Remets ton épée à sa place; car tous ceux qui se serviront de l’épée, périront par l’épée.
53 Do you think that I cannot ask my Father for help, when he would at once send to my aid more than twelve legions of angels?
Penses-tu que je ne puisse pas sur l’heure prier mon Père, qui me donnerait plus de douze légions d’anges?
54 But in that case how would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say that this must be?’
Comment donc s’accompliront les Écritures, qui attestent qu’il en doit être ainsi? »
55 Jesus at the same time said to the crowds, ‘Have you come out, as if after a robber, with swords and clubs, to take me? I have sat teaching day after day in the Temple Courts, and yet you did not arrest me.’
En même temps, Jésus dit à la foule: « Vous êtes venus, comme à un voleur, avec des épées et des bâtons pour me prendre. J’étais tous les jours assis parmi vous, enseignant dans le temple, et vous ne m’avez pas saisi;
56 The whole of this occurred in fulfilment of the prophetic scriptures. Then the disciples all forsook him and fled.
mais tout cela s’est fait, afin que s’accomplissent les oracles des prophètes. » Alors tous les disciples l’abandonnèrent et prirent la fuite.
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the Law and elders had assembled.
Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l’emmenèrent chez Caïphe, le grand prêtre, où s’étaient assemblés les scribes et les Anciens du peuple.
58 Peter followed him at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, to see the outcome.
Pierre le suivit de loin jusqu’à la cour du grand prêtre, y entra, et s’assit avec les serviteurs pour voir la fin.
59 Meanwhile the chief priests and the whole of the High Council were trying to get such false evidence against Jesus, as would warrant putting him to death,
Cependant les Princes des prêtres et tout le Conseil cherchaient quelque faux témoignage contre Jésus afin de le faire mourir;
60 but they did not find any, although many came forward with false evidence. Later on, however, two men came forward and said,
et ils n’en trouvèrent point, quoique plusieurs faux témoins se fussent présentés. Enfin il en vint deux
61 ‘This man said “I am able to destroy the Temple of God, and to build it in three days.”’
qui dirent: « Cet homme a dit: Je puis détruire le temple de Dieu et le rebâtir en trois jours. »
62 Then the high priest stood up, and said to Jesus, ‘Have you no answer? What is this evidence which these men are giving against you?’
Le grand prêtre, se levant, dit à Jésus: « Ne réponds-tu rien à ce que ces hommes déposent contre toi? »
63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, ‘I order you, by the living God, to tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.’
Jésus gardait le silence. Et le grand prêtre lui dit: « Je t’adjure par le Dieu vivant de nous dire si tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu? »
64 ‘It is true,’ Jesus answered, ‘Moreover I tell you all that hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the Almighty, and coming on the clouds of the heavens.’
Jésus lui répondit: « Tu l’as dit; de plus, je vous le dis, dès ce jour vous verrez le Fils de l’homme siéger à la droite du Tout-Puissant et venir sur les nuées du ciel. »
65 Then the high priest tore his robes. ‘This is blasphemy!’ he exclaimed. ‘Why do we want any more witnesses? You have just heard his blasphemy!
Alors le grand prêtre déchira ses vêtements, en disant: « Il a blasphémé, qu’avons-nous encore besoin de témoins? Vous venez d’entendre son blasphème:
66 What is your decision?’ They answered, ‘He deserves death.’
que vous en semble? » Ils répondirent: « Il mérite la mort. »
67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him, while others dealt blows at him, saying as they did so,
Alors ils lui crachèrent au visage, et le frappèrent avec le poing; d’autres le souffletèrent,
68 ‘Now play the prophet for us, you Christ! Who was it that struck you?’
en disant: « Christ, devine qui t’a frappé. »
69 Peter, meanwhile, was sitting outside in the courtyard; and a maidservant came up to him, and exclaimed, ‘Why, you were with Jesus the Galilean!’
Cependant Pierre était dehors, assis dans la cour. Une servante l’aborda et lui dit: « Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen. »
70 But Peter denied it before them all. ‘I do not know what you mean,’ he replied.
Mais il le nia devant tous en disant: « Je ne sais ce que tu veux dire. »
71 When he had gone out into the gateway, another maid saw him, and said to those who were there, ‘This man was with Jesus of Nazareth!’
Comme il se dirigeait vers le vestibule, pour s’en aller, une autre servante le vit et dit à ceux qui se trouvaient là: « Celui-ci était aussi avec Jésus de Nazareth. »
72 Again he denied it with an oath, ‘I do not know the man!’
Et Pierre le nia une seconde fois avec serment: « Je ne connais pas cet homme. »
73 But soon afterwards those who were standing by came up and said to Peter, ‘You also are certainly one of them; why, even your way of speaking proves it!’
Peu après, ceux qui étaient là s’approchèrent de Pierre, et lui dirent: « Certainement, tu es aussi de ces gens-là; car ton langage même te faire reconnaître. »
74 Then Peter said, ‘I swear that I do not know the man! May God punish me if I am lying!’ At that moment a cock crowed;
Alors il se mit à faire des imprécations et à jurer qu’il ne connaissait pas cet homme. Aussitôt le coq chanta.
75 and Peter remembered the words which Jesus had said – “Before a cock has crowed, you will disown me three times”; and he went outside, and wept bitterly.
Et Pierre se souvint de la parole que Jésus lui avait dite: « Avant que le coq chante, tu me renieras trois fois; » et étant sorti, il pleura amèrement.
