Matthew 23
1 Then Jesus, speaking to the crowds and to his disciples, said,
Dann redete Jesus zu den Volksmengen und zu seinen Jüngern und sprach:
2 ‘The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees now occupy the chair of Moses.
Die Schriftgelehrten und die Pharisäer haben sich auf Moses' Stuhl gesetzt.
3 Therefore practice and lay to heart everything that they preach but do not practice.
Alles nun, was irgend sie euch sagen, tut und haltet; aber tut nicht nach ihren Werken, denn sie sagen es und tun's nicht.
4 While they make up heavy loads and pile them on other people’s shoulder’s they decline, themselves, to lift a finger to move them.
Sie binden aber schwere und schwer zu tragende Lasten und legen sie auf die Schultern der Menschen, aber sie wollen sie nicht mit ihrem Finger bewegen.
5 All their actions are done to attract attention. They widen their phylacteries, and increase the size of their tassels,
Alle ihre Werke aber tun sie, um sich vor den Menschen sehen zu lassen; denn sie machen ihre Denkzettel breit und die Quasten groß.
6 and like to have the place of honour at dinner, and the best seats in the synagogues,
Sie lieben aber den ersten Platz bei den Gastmählern und die ersten Sitze in den Synagogen
7 and to be greeted in the markets with respect, and to be called “Rabbi” by everybody.
und die Begrüßungen auf den Märkten und von den Menschen Rabbi, Rabbi! genannt zu werden.
8 But do not allow yourselves to be called “Rabbi,” for you have only one teacher, and you yourselves are all brothers and sisters.
Ihr aber, laßt ihr euch nicht Rabbi nennen; denn einer ist euer Lehrer, ihr alle aber seid Brüder.
9 And do not call anyone on the earth your “Father,” for your have only one Father, the heavenly Father.
Ihr sollt auch nicht jemand auf der Erde euren Vater nennen; denn einer ist euer Vater, der in den Himmeln ist.
10 Nor must you allow yourselves to be called “leaders,” for you have only one leader, the Christ.
Laßt euch auch nicht Meister nennen; denn einer ist euer Meister, der Christus.
11 The person who wants to be the greatest among you must be your servant.
Der Größte aber unter euch soll euer Diener sein.
12 Whoever exalts themselves will be humbled, and whoever humbles themselves will be exalted.
Wer irgend aber sich selbst erhöhen wird, wird erniedrigt werden; und wer irgend sich selbst erniedrigen wird, wird erhöht werden.
13 But alas for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You turn the key of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you do not go in yourselves, and do not allow those who try to go in to do so.
Wehe aber euch, Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr verschließet das Reich der Himmel vor den Menschen; denn ihr gehet nicht hinein, noch laßt ihr die Hineingehenden eingehen.

15 Alas for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You scour land and sea to make a single convert, and, when they are gained, you make them twice as deserving of Gehenna as you are yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr durchziehet das Meer und das Trockene, um einen Proselyten zu machen; und wenn er es geworden ist, so machet ihr ihn zu einem Sohne der Hölle, zwiefältig mehr als ihr. (Geenna g1067)
16 Alas for you, you blind guides! You say “if any swear by the Temple, their oath counts for nothing; but, if anyone swears by the gold of the Temple, their oath is binding them”!
Wehe euch, blinde Leiter! Die ihr saget: Wer irgend bei dem Tempel schwören wird, das ist nichts; wer aber irgend bei dem Golde des Tempels schwören wird, ist schuldig.
17 Fools that you are and blind! Which is the more important? The gold? Or the Temple which has given sacredness to the gold?
Narren und Blinde! Denn was ist größer, das Gold, oder der Tempel, der das Gold heiligt?
18 You say, too, “If anyone swears by the altar, their oath counts for nothing, but, if anyone swears by the offering placed on it, their oath is binding on them”!
Und: Wer irgend bei dem Altar schwören wird, das ist nichts; wer aber irgend bei der Gabe schwören wird, die auf ihm ist, ist schuldig.
19 Blind indeed! Which is the more important? The offering? Or the altar which gives sacredness to the offering?
[Narren und] Blinde! Denn was ist größer, die Gabe oder der Altar, der die Gabe heiligt?
20 Therefore a person, swearing by the altar, swears by it and by all that is on it,
Wer nun bei dem Altar schwört, schwört bei demselben und bei allem, was auf ihm ist.
21 and a person, swearing by the Temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it,
Und wer bei dem Tempel schwört, schwört bei demselben und bei dem, der ihn bewohnt.
22 while a person, swearing by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.
Und wer bei dem Himmel schwört, schwört bei dem Throne Gottes und bei dem, der darauf sitzt.
23 Alas for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You pay tithes on mint, fennel, and caraway seed, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law – justice, mercy, and good faith. These last you ought to have put into practice, without neglecting the first.
wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr verzehntet die Krausemünze und den Anis und den Kümmel, und habt die wichtigeren Dinge des Gesetzes beiseite gelassen: das Gericht und die Barmherzigkeit und den Glauben; diese hättet ihr tun und jene nicht lassen sollen.
24 You blind guides, to strain out a gnat and to swallow a camel!
Blinde Leiter, die ihr die Mücke seihet, das Kamel aber verschlucket!
25 Alas for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are filled with the results of greed and self-indulgence.
Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr reiniget das Äußere des Bechers und der Schüssel, inwendig aber sind sie voll von Raub und Unenthaltsamkeit.
26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.
Blinder Pharisäer! Reinige zuerst das Inwendige des Bechers und der Schüssel, auf daß auch das Auswendige derselben rein werde.
27 Alas for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed look fair outside, while inside they are filled with dead people’s bones and all kinds of filth.
Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr gleichet übertünchten Gräbern, die von außen zwar schön scheinen, inwendig aber voll von Totengebeinen und aller Unreinigkeit sind.
28 It is the same with you. Outwardly, and to others, you have the look of religious people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and sin.
Also scheinet auch ihr von außen zwar gerecht vor den Menschen, von innen aber seid ihr voll Heuchelei und Gestezlosigkeit.
29 Alas for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the monuments of religious people,
Wehe euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, Heuchler! Denn ihr bauet die Gräber der Propheten und schmücket die Grabmäler der Gerechten und saget:
30 and say “Had we been living in the days of our ancestors, we should have taken no part in their murder of the prophets!”
Wären wir in den Tagen unserer Väter gewesen, so würden wir nicht ihre Teilhaber an dem Blute der Propheten gewesen sein.
31 By doing this you are furnishing evidence against yourselves that you are true children of the people who murdered the prophets.
Also gebet ihr euch selbst Zeugnis, daß ihr Söhne derer seid, welche die Propheten ermordet haben;
32 Go on then, finish what your ancestors began!
und ihr, machet voll das Maß eurer Väter!
Schlangen! Otternbrut! Wie solltet ihr dem Gericht der Hölle entfliehen? (Geenna g1067)
34 That is why I send you prophets, wise people, and teachers of the Law, some of whom you will crucify and kill, and some of whom you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from town to town;
Deswegen siehe, ich sende zu euch Propheten und Weise und Schriftgelehrte; und etliche von ihnen werdet ihr töten und kreuzigen, und etliche von ihnen werdet ihr in euren Synagogen geißeln und werdet sie verfolgen von Stadt zu Stadt;
35 so that on your heads may fall every drop of innocent blood split on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel down to that of Zechariah, Barachiah’s son, whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar.
damit über euch komme alles gerechte Blut, das auf der Erde vergossen wurde, von dem Blute Abels, des Gerechten, bis zu dem Blute Zacharias', des Sohnes Barachias', den ihr zwischen dem Tempel und dem Altar ermordet habt.
36 All this, I tell you, will come home to the present generation.
Wahrlich, ich sage euch, dies alles wird über dieses Geschlecht kommen.
37 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! She who slays the prophets and stones the messengers sent to her – Oh, how often have I wished to gather your children round me, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not come!
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, die da tötet die Propheten und steinigt, die zu ihr gesandt sind! Wie oft habe ich deine Kinder versammeln wollen, wie eine Henne ihre Küchlein versammelt unter ihre Flügel, und ihr habt nicht gewollt!
38 Verily, your house is left to you desolate!
Siehe, euer Haus wird euch öde gelassen;
39 For nevermore, I tell you, will you see me, until you say – “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”’
denn ich sage euch: Ihr werdet mich von jetzt an nicht sehen, bis ihr sprechet: “Gepriesen sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn!”
