< Matthew 16 >

1 Here the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and, to test Jesus, requested him to show them some sign from the heavens.
Et accesserunt ad eum Pharisæi, et Sadducæi tentantes: et rogaverunt eum ut signum de cælo ostenderet eis.
2 But Jesus answered, ‘In the evening you say “It will be fine weather, for the sky is as red as fire.”
At ille respondens, ait illis: Facto vespere dicitis: Serenum erit, rubicundum est enim cælum.
3 But in the morning you say “Today it will be stormy, for the sky is as red as fire and threatening.” You learn to read the sky; yet you are unable to read the signs of the times!
Et mane: Hodie tempestas, rutilat enim triste cælum.
4 A wicked and unfaithful generation is asking for a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah.’ So he left them and went away.
Faciem ergo cæli diiudicare nostis: signa autem temporum non potestis scire? Generatio mala et adultera signum quærit: et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Ionæ prophetæ. Et relictis illis, abiit.
5 Now the disciples had crossed to the opposite shore, and had forgotten to take any bread.
Et cum venissent discipuli eius trans fretum, obliti sunt panes accipere.
6 Presently Jesus said to them, ‘Take care and be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’
Qui dixit illis: Intuemini, et cavete a fermento Pharisæorum, et Sadducæorum.
7 But the disciples began talking among themselves about their having brought no bread.
At illi cogitabant intra se dicentes: Quia panes non accepimus.
8 On noticing this, Jesus said, ‘Why are you talking among yourselves about your being short of bread, you of little faith?
Sciens autem Iesus, dixit: Quid cogitatis intra vos modicæ fidei, quia panes non habetis?
9 Don’t you yet see, nor remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took away?
Nondum intelligitis, neque recordamini quinque panum in quinque millia hominum, et quot cophinos sumpsistis?
10 Nor yet the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you took away?
neque septem panum in quattuor millia hominum, et quot sportas sumpsistis?
11 How is it that you do not see that I was not speaking about bread? Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’
Quare non intelligitis, quia non de pane dixi vobis: Cavete a fermento Pharisæorum, et Sadducæorum?
12 Then they understood that he had told them to be on their guard, not against the leaven of bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Tunc intellexerunt quia non dixerit cavendum a fermento panum, sed a doctrina Pharisæorum, et Sadducæorum.
13 On coming into the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples this question – ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’
Venit autem Iesus in partes Cæsareæ Philippi: et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens: Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?
14 ‘Some say John the Baptist,’ they answered, ‘Others, however, say that he is Elijah, while others again say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’
At illi dixerunt: Alii Ioannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Ieremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.
15 ‘But you,’ he said, ‘who do you say that I am?’
Dicit illis Iesus: Vos autem quem me esse dicitis?
16 To this Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’
Respondens Simon Petrus dixit: Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
17 ‘Blessed are you, Simon, Son of Jonah,’ Jesus replied. ‘For no human being has revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Respondens autem Iesus, dixit ei: Beatus es Simon Bar Iona: quia caro, et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in cælis est.
18 Yes, and I say to you, your name is “Peter” – a Rock, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail over it. (Hadēs g86)
Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam. (Hadēs g86)
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be held in heaven to be forbidden, and whatever you allow on earth will be held in heaven to be allowed.’
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in cælis: et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in cælis.
20 Then he charged his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
Tunc præcepit discipulis suis ut nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Iesus Christus.
21 At that time Jesus Christ began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and undergo much suffering at the hands of the elders, and chief priests, and teachers of the Law, and be put to death, and rise on the third day.
Exinde cœpit Iesus ostendere discipulis suis, quia oporteret eum ire Ierosolymam, et multa pati a senioribus, et Scribis, et principibus sacerdotum, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.
22 But Peter took Jesus aside, and began to rebuke him. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘please God that will never be your fate!’
Et assumens eum Petrus, cœpit increpare illum dicens: Absit a te, Domine: non erit tibi hoc.
23 Jesus, however, turning to Peter, said, ‘Out of my way, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you look at things, not as God does, but as person does.’
Qui conversus, dixit Petro: Vade post me Satana, scandalum es mihi: quia non sapis ea, quæ Dei sunt, sed ea, quæ hominum.
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wishes to walk in my steps, they must renounce self, and take up their cross, and follow me.
Tunc Iesus dixit discipulis suis: Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.
25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever, for my sake, loses his life will find it.
Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam. Qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.
26 What good will it do a person to gain the whole world, if he forfeits his life? Or what will a person give that is of equal value with his life?
Quid enim prodest homini, si mundum universum lucretur, animæ vero suæ detrimentum patiatur? Aut quam dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua?
27 For the Son of Man is to come in his Father’s glory, with his angels, and then he will give to everyone what his actions deserve.
Filius enim hominis venturus est in gloria Patris sui cum Angelis suis: et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opera eius.
28 I tell you, some of those who are standing here will not know death until they have seen the Son of Man coming into his kingdom.’
Amen dico vobis, sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem, donec videant Filium hominis venientem in regno suo.
