< Luke 17 >

1 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘It is inevitable that there should be temptations but sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!
And he said unto the disciples, 'It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come, but woe [to him] through whom they come;
2 It would be better for them if they had been flung into the sea with a millstone round their neck, rather than that they should cause even one of these little ones to stumble.
it is more profitable to him if a weighty millstone is put round about his neck, and he hath been cast into the sea, than that he may cause one of these little ones to stumble.
3 Be on your guard! If your brother or sister does wrong, rebuke them; but if they repent, forgive them.
'Take heed to yourselves, and, if thy brother may sin in regard to thee, rebuke him, and if he may reform, forgive him,
4 Even if they wrong you seven times a day, but turns to you every time and says “I am sorry,” you must forgive them.’
and if seven times in the day he may sin against thee, and seven times in the day may turn back to thee, saying, I reform; thou shalt forgive him.'
5 ‘Give us more faith,’ said the apostles to the Master;
And the apostles said to the Lord, 'Add to us faith;'
6 but the Master said, ‘If your faith were only like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.
and the Lord said, 'If ye had faith as a grain of mustard, ye would have said to this sycamine, Be uprooted, and be planted in the sea, and it would have obeyed you.
7 Which of you, if he had a servant ploughing, or tending the sheep, would say to him, when he came in from the fields, “Come at once and take your place at the table,”
'But, who is he of you — having a servant ploughing or feeding — who, to him having come in out of the field, will say, Having come near, recline at meat?
8 Instead of saying “Prepare my dinner, and then make yourself ready and serve me while I am eating and drinking, and after that you will eat and drink yourself”?
but will not [rather] say to him, Prepare what I may sup, and having girded thyself about, minister to me, till I eat and drink, and after these things thou shalt eat and drink?
9 Does he feel grateful to his servant for doing what he is told?
Hath he favour to that servant because he did the things directed? I think not.
10 And so with you – when you have done all that you have been told, still say “We are but useless servants; we have done no more than we ought to have done.”’
'So also ye, when ye may have done all the things directed you, say — We are unprofitable servants, because that which we owed to do — we have done.'
11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus passed between Samaria and Galilee.
And it came to pass, in his going on to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee,
12 As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him.
and he entering into a certain village, there met him ten leprous men, who stood afar off,
13 Standing still, some distance off, they called out loudly, ‘Jesus! Sir! Pity us!’
and they lifted up the voice, saying, 'Jesus, master, deal kindly with us;'
14 When Jesus saw them, he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priest.’ And, as they were on their way, they were made clean.
and having seen [them], he said to them, 'Having gone on, shew yourselves to the priests;' and it came to pass, in their going, they were cleansed,
15 One of them, finding he was cured, came back, praising God loudly,
and one of them having seen that he was healed did turn back, with a loud voice glorifying God,
16 and threw himself on his face at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done; and this man was a Samaritan.
and he fell upon [his] face at his feet, giving thanks to him, and he was a Samaritan.
17 ‘Were not all the ten made clean? exclaimed Jesus. But the nine – where are they?
And Jesus answering said, 'Were not the ten cleansed, and the nine — where?
18 Were there none to come back and praise God except this foreigner?
There were not found who did turn back to give glory to God, except this alien;'
19 Get up,’ he said to him, ‘and go on your way. Your faith has delivered you.’
and he said to him, 'Having risen, be going on, thy faith hath saved thee.'
20 Being once asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was to come, Jesus answered, ‘The kingdom of God does not come in a way that can be seen,
And having been questioned by the Pharisees, when the reign of God doth come, he answered them, and said, 'The reign of God doth not come with observation;
21 nor will people say “Look, here it is!” or “There it is!”; for the kingdom of God is within you!
nor shall they say, Lo, here; or lo, there; for lo, the reign of God is within you.'
22 The day will come,’ he said to his disciples, ‘when you will long to see but one of the days of the Son of Man, and will not see it.
And he said unto his disciples, 'Days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and ye shall not behold [it];
23 People will say to you “There he is!” Or “Here he is!” Do not go and follow them.
and they shall say to you, Lo, here; or lo, there; ye may not go away, nor follow;
24 For, just as lightning will lighten and flare from one side of the heavens to the other, so will it be with the Son of Man.
for as the lightning that is lightening out of the one [part] under heaven, to the other part under heaven doth shine, so shall be also the Son of Man in his day;
25 But first he must undergo much suffering, and he must be rejected by the present generation.
and first it behoveth him to suffer many things, and to be rejected by this generation.
26 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be again in the days of the Son of Man.
'And, as it came to pass in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man;
27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being married, up to the very day on which Noah entered the ark, and then the flood came and destroyed them all.
they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were given in marriage, till the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the deluge came, and destroyed all;
28 So, too, in the days of Lot. People were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building;
in like manner also, as it came to pass in the days of Lot; they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building;
29 but, on the very day on which Lot came out of Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from the skies and destroyed them all.
and on the day Lot went forth from Sodom, He rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed all.
30 It will be the same on the day on which the Son of Man reveals himself.
'According to these things it shall be, in the day the Son of Man is revealed;
31 On that day, if a person is on their house-top and their goods in the house, they must not go down to get them; nor again must one who is on the farm turn back.
in that day, he who shall be on the house top, and his vessels in the house, let him not come down to take them away; and he in the field, in like manner, let him not turn backward;
32 Remember Lot’s wife.
remember the wife of Lot.
33 Whoever is eager to get the most out of their life will lose it; but whoever will lose it will preserve it.
Whoever may seek to save his life, shall lose it; and whoever may lose it, shall preserve it.
34 On that night, I tell you, of two people on the same bed, one will be taken and the other left;
'I say to you, In that night, there shall be two men on one couch, the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left;
35 of two women grinding grain together, one will be taken and the other left.’
two women shall be grinding at the same place together, the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left;
two men shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left.'
37 ‘Where will it be, Master?’ asked the disciples. ‘Where there is a body,’ said Jesus, ‘there will the vultures flock.’
And they answering say to him, 'Where, sir?' and he said to them, 'Where the body [is], there will the eagles be gathered together.'
