Esther 4

1 When Mordecai learned all that had been done, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and strewed ashes on his head, and went out into the city and raised a loud and bitter cry of lamentation.

Mardochée, ayant appris tout ce qui se passait, déchira ses vêtements, s’enveloppa d’un sac et se couvrit de cendre. Puis il alla au milieu de la ville en poussant avec force des cris amers,

2 He went as far as the king’s gate, but no one could enter the gate clothed with sackcloth.

et se rendit jusqu’à la porte du roi, dont l’entrée était interdite à toute personne revêtue d’un sac.

3 In every province, wherever the king’s command and decree went, there was great mourning, fasting, weeping, and wailing among the Jews. Many of them sat in sackcloth and ashes.

Dans chaque province, partout où arrivaient l’ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut une grande désolation parmi les Juifs; ils jeûnaient, pleuraient et se lamentaient, et beaucoup se couchaient sur le sac et la cendre.

4 When Esther’s maids and attendants told her about Mordecai’s behaviour, she was greatly troubled. She sent garments for Mordecai to put on, so that he could take off his sack-cloth, but he would not accept them.

Les servantes d’Esther et ses eunuques vinrent lui annoncer cela, et la reine fut très effrayée. Elle envoya des vêtements à Mardochée pour le couvrir et lui faire ôter son sac, mais il ne les accepta pas.

5 So Esther called Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs whom he had appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what it all meant and the reason for it.

Alors Esther appela Hathac, l’un des eunuques que le roi avait placés auprès d’elle, et elle le chargea d’aller demander à Mardochée ce que c’était et d’où cela venait.

6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to the city square in front of the king’s gate.

Hathac se rendit vers Mardochée sur la place de la ville, devant la porte du roi.

7 Mordecai told him all that had happened to him and the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay into the king’s treasury for the destruction of the Jews.

Et Mardochée lui raconta tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et lui indiqua la somme d’argent qu’Haman avait promis de livrer au trésor du roi en retour du massacre des Juifs.

8 Also he gave him a copy of the decree to destroy them, that had been published in Susa, to show to Esther for her information. He also told her to go to the king and implore his mercy and to plead with him in behalf of her people.

Il lui donna aussi une copie de l’édit publié dans Suse en vue de leur destruction, afin qu’il le montrât à Esther et lui fît tout connaître; et il ordonna qu’Esther se rendît chez le roi pour lui demander grâce et l’implorer en faveur de son peuple.

9 When Hathach came and told Esther what Mordecai had said,

Hathac vint rapporter à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.

10 she instructed Hathach to go and say to Mordecai,

Esther chargea Hathac d’aller dire à Mardochée:

11 ‘All the king’s courtiers and the people of the king’s provinces know that for every man or woman who goes to the king into the inner court without being called there is one penalty, death, unless the king holds out the golden sceptre signifying that they may live. It has been thirty days since I have been called to go in to the king.’

Tous les serviteurs du roi et le peuple des provinces du roi savent qu’il existe une loi portant peine de mort contre quiconque, homme ou femme, entre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été appelé; celui-là seul a la vie sauve, à qui le roi tend le sceptre d’or. Et moi, je n’ai point été appelée auprès du roi depuis trente jours.

12 When Mordecai was told what Esther had said,

Lorsque les paroles d’Esther eurent été rapportées à Mardochée,

13 he sent back this reply to Esther, ‘Don’t imagine that you alone of all the Jews will escape because you belong to the king’s household.

Mardochée fit répondre à Esther: Ne t’imagine pas que tu échapperas seule d’entre tous les Juifs, parce que tu es dans la maison du roi;

14 If you persist in remaining silent at this time, relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another quarter, but you and your family will perish. Who knows? Maybe you have been raised to the throne for a time like this!’

car, si tu te tais maintenant, le secours et la délivrance surgiront d’autre part pour les Juifs, et toi et la maison de ton père vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n’est pas pour un temps comme celui-ci que tu es parvenue à la royauté?

15 Then Esther sent this message to Mordecai:

Esther envoya dire à Mardochée:

16 ‘Go, gather all the Jews in Susa and fast for me. Don’t eat nor drink anything for three days and nights. My maids and I will fast as well. Then I will go in to the king, although it is contrary to the law, and if I die, I die.’

Va, rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, sans manger ni boire pendant trois jours, ni la nuit ni le jour. Moi aussi, je jeûnerai de même avec mes servantes, puis j’entrerai chez le roi, malgré la loi; et si je dois périr, je périrai.

17 Mordecai did everything Esther had directed.

Mardochée s’en alla, et fit tout ce qu’Esther lui avait ordonné.
