Acts 7
1 Then the high priest asked, ‘Is this true?’
Wtedy najwyższy kapłan zapytał: Czy tak się sprawy mają?
2 Stephen replied, ‘Brothers and fathers, hear what I have to say. God, who manifests himself in the glory, appeared to our ancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, and before he settled in Haran, and said to him –
A on odpowiedział: Mężowie bracia i ojcowie, słuchajcie! Bóg chwały ukazał się naszemu ojcu Abrahamowi, gdy był w Mezopotamii, zanim zamieszkał w Charanie.
3 “Leave your country and your people, and come into the country that I will show you.”
I powiedział do niego: Opuść swoją ziemię i swoją rodzinę i idź do ziemi, którą ci wskażę.
4 And so Abraham left the country of the Chaldaeans and settled in Haran; and from there, after his father’s death, God caused him to migrate into this country, in which you are now living.
Wtedy wyszedł z ziemi chaldejskiej i zamieszkał w Charanie. A stamtąd, gdy umarł jego ojciec, [Bóg] przeniósł go do tej ziemi, w której wy teraz mieszkacie.
5 God did not at that time give him any part of it, not even a foot of ground. But he promised to give him possession of it and his descendants after him, though at that time he had no child.
I nie dał mu w niej dziedzictwa nawet na stopę [jego] nogi. Obiecał tylko, że da ją w posiadanie jemu i jego potomstwu po nim, gdy [jeszcze] nie miał dziecka.
6 God’s words were these – “Abraham’s descendants will live in a foreign country, where they will be enslaved and ill-treated for four hundred years.
I tak mu Bóg powiedział: Twoje potomstwo będzie przebywać w obcej ziemi, wezmą je w niewolę i będą je uciskać przez czterysta lat.
7 But I myself will judge the nation, to which they will be enslaved,” God said, “and after that they will leave the country and worship me in this place.”
Lecz ten naród, u którego będzie w niewoli, ja będę sądził – powiedział Bóg. A potem wyjdą i będą mi służyć na tym miejscu.
8 Then God made with Abraham the covenant of circumcision; and under it Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him when he was eight days old; and Isaac became the father of Jacob; and Jacob of the Twelve Patriarchs.
I zawarł z nim przymierze obrzezania. Tak to [Abraham] spłodził Izaaka i obrzezał go ósmego dnia, a Izaak Jakuba, a Jakub dwunastu patriarchów.
9 The Patriarchs, out of jealousy, sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him,
A patriarchowie z zawiści sprzedali Józefa do Egiptu. Lecz Bóg był z nim.
10 and delivered him out of all his troubles, and enabled him to win favour and show wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who appointed him Governor of Egypt and of his whole household.
I wyrwał go ze wszystkich jego utrapień, i dał mu łaskę i mądrość w oczach faraona, króla Egiptu, który ustanowił go przełożonym nad Egiptem i nad całym swoim domem.
11 Then a famine spread over the whole of Egypt and Canaan, causing great distress, and our ancestors could find no food.
Potem nastał głód i wielka niedola w całej ziemi Egiptu i Kanaan, a nasi ojcowie nie znajdowali żywności.
12 Hearing, however, that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob sent our ancestors there on their first visit.
A gdy Jakub usłyszał, że w Egipcie jest zboże, wysłał naszych ojców pierwszy raz.
13 In the course of their second visit, Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, and his family became known to Pharaoh.
A za drugim [razem] Józef dał się poznać swoim braciom i faraon dowiedział się o rodzie Józefa.
14 Then Joseph sent an urgent invitation to his father Jacob and to his relatives, seventy-five persons in all;
Potem Józef posłał po swego ojca Jakuba i całą swoją rodzinę [liczącą] siedemdziesiąt pięć dusz.
15 and so Jacob went down into Egypt. There he died, and our ancestors also,
Jakub przybył do Egiptu i [tam] umarł on sam i nasi ojcowie.
16 and their bodies were removed to Shechem, and laid in the tomb which Abraham had bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.
I zostali przeniesieni do Sychem i złożeni w grobie, który Abraham kupił za pieniądze u synów Chamora, [ojca] Sychema.
17 As the time drew near for the fulfilment of the promise which God had made to Abraham, the people increased largely in numbers in Egypt,
A gdy zbliżył się czas obietnicy, którą Bóg złożył Abrahamowi, lud w Egipcie rozrodził się i rozmnożył;
18 until a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph, came to the throne.
Aż nastał inny król, który nie znał Józefa.
19 This king acted deceitfully towards our people and ill-treated our ancestors, making them abandon their own infants, so that they should not be reared.
Ten, działając podstępnie wobec naszego narodu, uciskał naszych ojców tak, że musieli porzucać swoje niemowlęta, żeby nie zostawały przy życiu.
20 It was just at this time that Moses was born. He was an exceedingly beautiful child, and for three months was brought up in his own father’s house;
W tym czasie urodził się Mojżesz, a był miły Bogu i wychowywano go przez trzy miesiące w domu jego ojca.
21 and, when he was abandoned, the daughter of Pharaoh found him and brought him up as her own son.
A gdy go porzucono, wzięła go córka faraona i wychowała go jak syna.
22 So Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and proved his ability both by his words and actions.
I wyuczono Mojżesza całej mądrości egipskiej, i był potężny w słowach i czynach.
23 When he was in his fortieth year, he resolved to visit his fellow Israelites;
A gdy miał czterdzieści lat, przyszło mu na myśl odwiedzić swych braci, synów Izraela.
24 and, seeing an Israelite ill-treated, he defended him, and avenged the man, who was being wronged, by striking down the Egyptian.
A kiedy zobaczył, że jednemu z nich wyrządzano krzywdę, ujął się za nim i pomścił skrzywdzonego, zabijając Egipcjanina.
25 He thought his own people would understand that God was using him to save them; but they failed to do so.
Sądził bowiem, że jego bracia zrozumieją, że Bóg przez jego ręce daje im wybawienie. Lecz oni nie zrozumieli.
26 The next day he again appeared on the scene, when some of them were fighting, and tried to make peace between them. “Men,” he said, “you are brothers; how is it that you are ill-treating one another?”
Następnego dnia zjawił się wśród nich, gdy się ze sobą bili, i próbował ich pogodzić, mówiąc: Ludzie, jesteście braćmi, dlaczego krzywdzicie jeden drugiego?
27 But the man who was ill-treating his fellow workman pushed Moses aside saying – “Who made you a ruler and judge over us?
Lecz ten, który krzywdził bliźniego, odepchnął go, mówiąc: Kto cię ustanowił wodzem i sędzią nad nami?
28 Do you mean to make away with me as you did yesterday with that Egyptian?”
Czy chcesz mnie zabić, tak jak wczoraj zabiłeś Egipcjanina?
29 At these words Moses took to flight, and became an exile in Midian; and there he had two sons born to him.
Na te słowa Mojżesz uciekł i był cudzoziemcem w ziemi Madian, gdzie spłodził dwóch synów.
30 Forty years had passed when there appeared to him, in the desert of Mount Sinai, an angel in a flame of fire in a bush.
Po czterdziestu latach ukazał mu się na pustyni góry Synaj anioł Pana w płomieniu ognia w krzaku.
31 When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the vision; but on his going nearer to look at it more closely, the voice of the Lord was heard to say –
Kiedy Mojżesz [to] ujrzał, zdziwił się na ten widok. A gdy podszedł, aby się [temu] przyjrzeć, rozległ się głos Pana:
32 “I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Moses trembled, and did not dare to look.
Ja jestem Bogiem twoich ojców, Bogiem Abrahama, Bogiem Izaaka i Bogiem Jakuba. A Mojżesz zadrżał i nie śmiał się przypatrywać.
33 Then the Lord said to him – “Take your sandals off your feet, for the spot where you are standing is holy ground.
Wtedy Pan powiedział do niego: Zdejmij z nóg obuwie, bo miejsce, na którym stoisz, jest ziemią świętą.
34 I have seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt, and heard their groans, and I have come down to deliver them. Come now and I will send you into Egypt.”
Patrząc, widziałem utrapienie mego ludu, który jest w Egipcie, i słyszałem jego wzdychanie, i zstąpiłem, żeby go wybawić. Dlatego teraz chodź, poślę cię do Egiptu.
35 This same Moses, whom they had disowned with the words – “Who made you a ruler and a judge?” was the man whom God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer, under the guidance of the angel that had appeared to him in the bush.
Tego Mojżesza, którego się wyparli, mówiąc: Któż cię ustanowił wodzem i sędzią? – tego Bóg posłał jako wodza i wybawiciela przez rękę anioła, który mu się ukazał w krzaku.
36 He it was who led them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the desert during forty years.
On wyprowadził ich, czyniąc cuda i znaki w ziemi Egiptu, nad Morzem Czerwonym i na pustyni [przez] czterdzieści lat.
37 This was the Moses who said to the people of Israel – “God will raise up for you, from among yourselves, a prophet, as he raised up me.”
To jest ten Mojżesz, który powiedział synom Izraela: Proroka jak ja wzbudzi wam Pan, wasz Bóg, spośród waszych braci. Jego będziecie słuchać.
38 He, too, it was who was present at the assembly in the desert, with the angel who talked to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors, and who received living truths to impart to you.
On to był w zgromadzeniu na pustyni z aniołem, który mówił do niego na górze Synaj i z naszymi ojcami. On przyjął żywe słowa Boże, aby nam je przekazać.
39 Yet our ancestors refused him obedience; more than that, they rejected him, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,
Lecz nasi ojcowie nie chcieli mu być posłuszni, ale odepchnęli go i zwrócili swoje serca ku Egiptowi.
40 while they said to Aaron – “Make us Gods who will lead the way for us, since, as for this Moses who has brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
Powiedzieli do Aarona: Zrób nam bogów, którzy będą szli przed nami, bo nie wiemy, co się stało z tym Mojżeszem, który nas wyprowadził z ziemi Egiptu.
41 That was the time when they made the calf and offered sacrifice to their idol, and held festivities in honour of their own handiwork!
I zrobili cielca w tych dniach, i złożyli ofiarę temu bożkowi, i cieszyli się dziełami swoich rąk.
42 So God turned from them and left them to the worship of the Starry Host, as is written in the book of the prophets – “Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me, house of Israel, all those forty years in the desert?
Wtedy Bóg odwrócił się [od nich] i oddał ich w służbę zastępom nieba, jak jest napisane w księdze proroków: Czy mi składaliście zabite [zwierzęta] i inne ofiary na pustyni przez czterdzieści lat, domu Izraela?
43 You took with you the tent where Moloch is worshipped and the star of the god Rephan – the images which you had made to worship. Therefore I will exile you beyond Babylon.”
Raczej obnosiliście namiot Molocha i gwiazdę waszego boga Remfana, wizerunki, które sobie zrobiliście, żeby oddawać im cześć. Dlatego zaprowadzę was poza Babilon.
44 Our ancestors had the tent where they worshipped God in the desert, constructed, just as he who spoke to Moses had directed him to make it, after the model which he had seen.
Nasi ojcowie mieli na pustyni Namiot Świadectwa, jak zarządził ten, który powiedział Mojżeszowi, aby go uczynił według wzoru, który widział.
45 This tent, which was handed down to them, was brought into this country by our ancestors who accompanied Joshua (at the conquest of the nations that God drove out before their advance), and remained here until the time of David.
Nasi ojcowie z Jozuem wzięli go i wnieśli do posiadłości pogan, których Bóg wypędził sprzed oblicza naszych ojców, aż do dni Dawida;
46 David found favour with God, and prayed that he might provide the God of Jacob with a place to reside.
Który znalazł łaskę przed Bogiem i prosił, aby mógł znaleźć przybytek dla Boga Jakuba.
47 But it was Solomon who built a house for God.
Lecz Salomon zbudował mu dom.
48 Yet it is not in buildings made by hands that the Most High dwells. As the prophet says –
Najwyższy jednak nie mieszka w świątyniach uczynionych ręką, jak mówi prorok:
49 “The heavens are a throne for me, and the earth a stool for my feet. What manner of house will you build me, asks the Lord, or what place is there where I may rest?
Niebo jest moim tronem, a ziemia podnóżkiem moich stóp. Jakiż dom mi zbudujecie, mówi Pan, albo gdzie jest miejsce mego odpoczynku?
50 Was it not my hand that made all these things?”
Czy tego wszystkiego nie uczyniła moja ręka?
51 Stubborn people, heathen in heart and ears, you are for ever resisting the Holy Spirit; your ancestors did it, and you are doing it still.
[Ludzie] twardego karku, nieobrzezanego serca i uszu! Wy zawsze sprzeciwiacie się Duchowi Świętemu. Jak wasi ojcowie, [tak] i wy!
52 Which of the prophets escaped persecution at their hands? They killed those who foretold the coming of the righteous one; of whom you, in your turn, have now become the betrayers and murderers –
Którego z proroków nie prześladowali wasi ojcowie? Pozabijali też tych, którzy przepowiadali przyjście Sprawiedliwego, którego wy staliście się teraz zdrajcami i mordercami.
53 you who received the Law as transmitted by angels and yet failed to keep it.’
Wy, którzy otrzymaliście prawo przez rozporządzenie aniołów, lecz nie przestrzegaliście [go].
54 As they listened to this, the Council grew frantic with rage, and gnashed their teeth at Stephen.
Gdy to usłyszeli, wpadli w gniew i zgrzytali na niego zębami.
55 He, filled as he was with the Holy Spirit, fixed his eyes intently on the heavens, and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right hand.
A on, pełen Ducha Świętego, patrzył uważnie w niebo i ujrzał chwałę Boga i Jezusa stojącego po prawicy Boga.
56 ‘Look,’ he exclaimed, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand!’
I powiedział: Oto widzę niebiosa otwarte i Syna Człowieczego stojącego po prawicy Boga.
57 At this, with a loud shout, they stopped their ears and all rushed on him, forced him outside the city,
A [oni] podnieśli wielki krzyk, zatkali sobie uszy i jednomyślnie się na niego rzucili.
58 and began to stone him, the witnesses laying their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.
Wyrzucili go poza miasto i kamienowali, a świadkowie złożyli swoje szaty u stóp młodzieńca zwanego Saulem.
59 And they stoned Stephen, while he cried to the Lord, ‘Lord Jesus! Receive my spirit!’
Tak kamienowali Szczepana, modlącego się tymi słowy: Panie Jezu, przyjmij mojego ducha.
60 Falling on his knees, he called out loudly, ‘Lord! Do not charge them with this sin;’ and with these words he fell asleep.
A upadłszy na kolana, zawołał donośnym głosem: Panie, nie poczytaj im tego za grzech. A gdy to powiedział, zasnął.
