2 Corinthians 2
1 For my own sake, as well, I decided not to pay you another painful visit.
Je me suis donc décidé à ne pas revenir une seconde fois chez vous pour vous attrister
2 If it is I who cause you pain, why, who is there to cheer me, except the person whom I am paining?
(car si je vous attristais, que deviendrais-je, n'ayant pour m'égayer que celui que j'aurais attristé?); et je vous ai écrit.
3 So I wrote as I did because I was afraid that if I had come, I should have been pained by those who ought to have made me glad; for I felt sure that it was true of you all that my joy was in every case yours also.
Je vous ai écrit pour qu'à mon arrivée ceux qui devaient me donner de la joie ne me fissent pas de chagrin; j'étais convaincu, et cela de vous tous, que ma joie est aussi la vôtre à tous.
4 I wrote to you in sore trouble and distress of heart and with many tears, not to give you pain, but to let you see how intense a love I have for you.
J'étais profondément affligé, j'avais le coeur serré, je pleurais en vous écrivant, non que je voulusse vous faire de la peine, mais vous montrer l'amour sans bornes que j'ai pour vous.
5 Now whoever has caused the pain has not so much pained me, as he has, to some extent – not to be too severe – pained every one of you.
Si l'un de vous en particulier a été une cause de tristesse, ce n'est pas moi personnellement, non je ne veux pas l'accabler, c'est vous tous, en un sens, qu'il a attristés.
6 The man to whom I refer has been sufficiently punished by the penalty inflicted by the majority of you;
Ce blâme général est pour lui un châtiment suffisant; aussi vous faut-il au contraire lui accorder sa grâce et le consoler de peur qu'il ne succombe à un trop grand chagrin.
7 so that now you must take the opposite course, and forgive and encourage him, or else he may be overwhelmed by the intensity of his pain.
Prenez donc, je vous prie, une décision charitable à son égard;
8 So I entreat you to assure him of your love.
car j'avais un but en vous écrivant, je voulais vous mettre à l'épreuve et voir si vous m'obéissiez en toutes choses.
9 I had this further object, also, in what I wrote – to find out whether you might be relied on to be obedient in everything.
Si vous lui accordez sa grâce, il a aussi la mienne; et, quant à moi,
10 Anyone you forgive, I forgive them, too. Indeed, for my part, whatever I have forgiven (if I have had to forgive anything), I have forgiven for your sakes, in the presence of Christ,
si je l'accorde, c'est à cause de vous, c'est en présence du Christ que je l'accorde,
11 so as to prevent Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.
et pour que nous ne fassions pas les affaires de Satan dont les desseins nous sont bien connus.
12 When I went to the district round Troas to tell the good news of the Christ, even though there was an opening for serving the Master,
J'étais allé à Troas pour annoncer l'Évangile du Christ, le Seigneur m'y ouvrait une porte,
13 I could get no peace of mind because I failed to find Titus, my friend; so I took leave of the people there, and went on to Macedonia.
et cependant je n'y ai pas eu l'esprit en repos parce que je n'y ai pas rencontré mon frère Tite, aussi ai-je pris congé des frères, et suis-je parti pour la Macédoine.
14 All thanks to God, who, through our union with the Christ, leads us in one continual triumph, and uses us to spread the sweet perfume of the knowledge of him in every place.
Grâces soient à Dieu qui nous fait sans cesse triompher en Christ et qui, en tout lieu, répand par nous sa connaissance comme on répand un parfum.
15 For we are the fragrance of Christ ascending to God – both among those who are in the path of salvation and among those who are in the path to ruin.
Car le parfum de Christ c'est nous qui le sommes pour Dieu et parmi les sauvés et parmi ceux qui vont périr;
16 To the latter we are a stench which arises from death and tells of death; to the former a fragrance which arises from life and tells of life. But who is equal to such a task?
pour ceux-ci cette odeur vient de la mort et va à la mort, pour ceux-là elle vient de la vie et va à la vie; — (à cette tâche qui suffira?) —
17 Unlike many people, we are not in the habit of making profit out of God’s message; but in all sincerity, and bearing God’s commission, we speak before him in union with Christ.
nous ne sommes pas, en effet, comme le grand nombre, nous ne frelatons pas la parole de Dieu, mais c'est avec sincérité, mais c'est telle qu'elle vient de Dieu, c'est devant Dieu, c'est en Christ que nous la prêchons.
