Revelation 18
1 After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Après cela je vis un autre ange, descendant du ciel, ayant une grande autorité, et la terre fut illuminée de sa gloire,
2 And he cried with a strong voice, saying: Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, and is become a habitation of demons, and a hold of every unclean spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird;
et il s'écria d'une voix puissante: Elle est tombée, elle est tombée, Babylone la grande! Elle est devenue un habitacle de démons, et une prison pour tout esprit impur et odieux, et une prison pour toute bête impure et odieuse,
3 for all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth became rich out of the abundance of her luxury.
parce que, grâce à l'ardeur de son impudicité, toutes les nations sont tombées, et que les rois de la terre se sont livrés avec elle à l'impudicité, et que les marchands de la terre se sont enrichis par la puissance de son luxe. »
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues;
Et j'entendis une autre voix venant du ciel qui disait: « Sortez du milieu d'elle, mon peuple, afin que vous ne preniez point part à ses péchés, et que vous n'ayez point à souffrir de ses fléaux;
5 for her sins have reached to heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
car ses péchés se sont accumulés jusques au ciel, et Dieu s'est souvenu de ses iniquités!
6 Requite her even as she requited, and render to her double according to her works; in the cup which she mixed, mix to her double.
Payez la comme elle-même a payé, et doublez deux fois en raison de ses propres œuvres; dans le calice qu'elle a préparé, préparez-lui une double rasade;
7 As much as she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, so much torment and mourning give her. For she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no mourning;
autant elle s'est glorifiée et plongée dans le luxe, autant donnez-lui de tourment et de deuil; car elle dit en son cœur: Je trône en reine et je ne suis point veuve, et je ne connaîtrai certainement pas le deuil.
8 therefore in one day shall her plagues come, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be burned up with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judged her.
C'est pour cela qu'en un seul jour ses fléaux fondront sur elle: la mort, le deuil et la famine, et elle sera consumée par le feu; car Il est puissant le Dieu qui l'a jugée!
9 And the kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her shall weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning,
Et les rois de la terre, qui se sont livrés avec elle à l'impudicité et au luxe, pleureront et se lamenteront sur elle, quand ils verront la fumée de son embrasement,
10 standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, the great city! Babylon, the mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
se tenant à distance par crainte de son tourment, en disant: Malheur, malheur, ô la grande ville, ô Babylone, la ville puissante; car en une seule heure est survenue ta condamnation!
11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buyeth their merchandise any more;
Et les marchands de la terre pleurent et sont dans le deuil au milieu d'elle, parce que personne n'achète plus leur cargaison:
12 merchandise of gold and of silver, and of precious stones and of pearls, and of fine linen and of purple, and of silk and of scarlet; and all citron wood, and all manner of vessels of ivory, and all manner of vessels of most costly wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble;
cargaison d'or, et d'argent, et de pierres précieuses, et de perles, et de fin lin, et de soie, et d'écarlate; et toute espèce d'ustensiles en thuya, et toute espèce d'ustensiles en ivoire, et toute espèce d'ustensiles en pierre très précieuse, et en airain, et en fer, et en marbre;
13 and cinnamon, and amomum, and odors, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and merchandise of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men.
et l'encens, et les épices, et les parfums, et la myrrhe, et l'essence, et le vin, et l'huile, et la fine farine, et le blé, et le gros et le menu bétail; et cargaison de chevaux, et de chars, et de corps; et des vies humaines.
14 And the fruits that thy soul desired are departed from thee, and all thy dainty and splendid things are perished from thee, and thou shalt find them no more.
Et le fruit que convoitait ton âme s'est éloigné de toi; et toutes les magnificences et les splendeurs t'ont été ravies, et ils ne les retrouveront certainement plus.
15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning,
Les marchands de ces choses, qui se sont enrichis grâce à elle, se tiendront à distance, par crainte de son tourment, dans les larmes et dans le deuil,
16 saying: Alas, alas, the great city, that was clothed in tilde linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls!
en disant: Malheur, malheur, ô la grande ville revêtue d'écarlate, et de pourpre et de fin lin, et couverte d'or, et de pierres précieuses et de perles; car en une seule heure toute cette grande richesse a été détruite!
17 for in one hour so great wealth is made desolate. And every pilot, and every one that saileth to any place, and mariners, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
Et tous les pilotes et tous ceux qui naviguent dans cette direction, et les matelots, et tous ceux qui exploitent la mer se tinrent à distance,
18 and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like the great city!
et ils s'écrièrent en voyant la place de son embrasement: Laquelle est semblable à la grande cité?
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried out, weeping and mourning, saying: Alas, alas, the great city, whereby were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her wealth! for in one hour she is made desolate.
Et ils jetèrent de la poussière sur leurs têtes, et ils s'écrièrent: Malheur, malheur, ô la grande ville, où se sont enrichis, grâce à son opulence, tous ceux qui possèdent les vaisseaux sur la mer; car en une seule heure elle a été détruite!
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints and ye apostles and ye prophets! for God hath avenged you on her.
Réjouis-toi à son sujet, ô ciel, et vous les saints, et les apôtres, et les prophètes! Car, en la jugeant, Dieu vous a fait justice. »
21 And a strong angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall Babylon the great city be thrown down, and shall never more be found.
Alors un ange souleva une pierre semblable à une grande meule de moulin, et il la jeta dans la mer, en disant: « C'est ainsi qu'avec violence sera précipitée Babylone, la grande ville; on ne la trouvera certainement plus!
22 And the sound of harpers, and of musicians, and of pipers, and of trumpeters shall be heard in thee no more, and no craftsman, of whatever craft, shall be found any more in thee, and the sound of a millstone shall never more be heard in thee,
Et la voix des joueurs de harpes, et des musiciens, et des joueurs de flûte et de trompette, ne sera certainement plus ouïe au milieu de toi; et aucun artisan ne sera certainement plus trouvé chez toi; et le bruit du moulin ne sera certainement plus ouï chez toi,
23 and the light of a lamp shall shine no more in thee, and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard in thee no more; for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorcery were all the nations deceived.
et la voix de l'époux et de l'épouse ne sera certainement plus ouïe chez toi. C'est que les grands de la terre étaient tes marchands, c'est que toutes les nations ont été égarées par tes sortilèges.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth.
Et l'on a trouvé chez elle le sang des prophètes et des saints, et de tous ceux qui ont été égorgés sur la terre. »
