John 18
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.
Après avoir dit ces choses Jésus sortit avec ses disciples pour se rendre, au delà du torrent des cèdres, en un lieu où se trouvait un jardin dans lequel il entra, lui et ses disciples.
2 And Judas also, his betrayer, knew the place; because Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples.
Or Judas, qui le livrait, connaissait aussi l'endroit, parce que souvent Jésus s'y était réuni à ses disciples.
3 Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with torches and lanterns and weapons.
Judas donc, ayant pris la cohorte et des satellites que lui avaient donnés les grands prêtres et les pharisiens, arrive en ce lieu avec des torches, des lanternes et des armes.
4 But Jesus, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith to them, Whom do ye seek?
Jésus donc, qui savait tout ce qui allait lui arriver, sortit et leur dit: « Qui cherchez-vous? »
5 They answered him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus saith to them, I am he. Now Judas also, his betrayer, was standing with them.
Ils lui répondirent: « Jésus le Nazoréen. » Il leur dit: « C'est moi qui suis Jésus. » Or Judas qui le livrait était aussi avec eux.
6 As soon then as he said to them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Lors donc qu'il leur eut dit: « C'est moi qui le suis, » ils reculèrent en arrière et tombèrent par terre.
7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom do ye seek? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
Il leur demanda donc derechef: « Qui cherchez-vous? » Et ils dirent: « Jésus le Nazoréen. »
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore ye are seeking me, let these men go.
Jésus répondit: « Je vous ai dit que c'est moi qui le suis, si donc vous me cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci. » —
9 That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom thou hast given me, I have lost none.”
Afin que fût accomplie la parole qu'il avait dite: ceux que tu m'as donnés, je n'en ai perdu aucun. —
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and smote the servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. And the servant's name was Malchus.
Simon Pierre qui avait une épée la tira donc et frappa l'esclave du grand prêtre et lui coupa l'oreille droite; or le nom de l'esclave était Malchus.
11 Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Jésus dit donc à Pierre: « Remets l'épée dans le fourreau; la coupe que le Père m'a donnée, ne la boirai-je pas? »
12 So the band and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him,
La cohorte, et le commandant, et les satellites des Juifs se saisirent donc de Jésus et le garrottèrent,
13 and carried him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high-priest that year.
et ils le conduisirent d'abord chez Annas; il était en effet beau-père de Caïaphas, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là. —
14 And it was Caiaphas who counseled the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Or Caïaphas était celui qui avait donné aux Juifs le conseil: il convient qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple. —
15 And Simon Peter and the other disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high-priest, and went with Jesus into the court of the palace of the high-priest.
Cependant Simon Pierre suivait Jésus, avec un autre disciple; or ce disciple-ci était connu du grand prêtre, et il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du grand prêtre,
16 But Peter was standing outside at the door. The other disciple therefore, who was an acquaintance of the high-priest, went out and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
mais Pierre se tenait dehors près de la porte. L'autre disciple, celui qui était connu du grand prêtre, sortit donc, et parla à la portière, et il fit entrer Pierre.
17 Then the maid-servant that kept the door saith to Peter, Art thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
La servante qui faisait office de portière dit donc à Pierre: « N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cet homme-là? » Il lui dit: « Je n'en suis point. »
18 And the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and were warming themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself.
Cependant les esclaves et les satellites se tenaient auprès d'un brasier qu'ils avaient allumé, car il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient; or Pierre se tenait aussi avec eux et se chauffait.
19 The high-priest then asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.
Le grand prêtre interrogea donc Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken plainly to the world; I always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble, and in secret I spoke nothing.
Jésus lui répondit: « Pour moi, c'est publiquement que j'ai parlé au monde; j'ai constamment enseigné dans une synagogue et dans le temple où tous les Juifs se rassemblent, et je n'ai rien dit en cachette.
21 Why askest thou me? Ask those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, these know what I have said.
Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Interroge ceux qui ont entendu ce dont je leur ai parlé; voici, ce sont eux qui savent ce que j'ai dit. »
22 And when he had said this, one of the officers who was standing by struck Jesus on the face, saying, Is it thus that thou answerest the high-priest?
Or quand il eut dit cela, un des satellites qui se trouvait là donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant: « C'est ainsi que tu réponds au grand prêtre! »
23 Jesus answered him, If I spoke what is evil, testify to the evil; but if well, why dost thou strike me?
Jésus lui répondit: « Si j'ai mal parlé, porte témoignage du mal que j'ai dit, mais si c'est bien, pourquoi me frappes-tu? »
24 Annas therefore sent him bound to Caiaphas the high-priest.
Annas l'envoya donc garrotté à Caïaphas le grand prêtre.
25 And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, Art thou also one of his disciples? He denied and said, I am not.
Cependant Simon Pierre était à se chauffer; ils lui dirent donc: « N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples? » Il le nia et dit: « Je n'en suis point. »
26 One of the servants of the high-priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
Un des esclaves du grand prêtre, qui était parent de celui dont Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, dit: « Est-ce que je ne t'ai pas vu dans le jardin avec lui? »
27 Then Peter denied again; and immediately a cock crew.
Pierre donc nia derechef, et aussitôt un coq chanta.
28 Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's palace; and it was early. And they did not themselves go into the palace, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.
Ils conduisent donc Jésus de chez Caïaphas au prétoire; or c'était le matin, et eux-mêmes n'entrèrent pas dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller, et de pouvoir manger la pâque.
29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and saith, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
Pilate donc sortit pour se rendre auprès d'eux et dit: « Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme? »
30 They answered and said to him, If he had not been doing evil, we would not have delivered him up to thee.
Ils lui répliquèrent: « Si celui-ci n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré. »
31 Pilate therefore said to them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any one to death.
Pilate leur dit donc: « Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et jugez-le selon votre loi. » Les Juifs lui dirent: « Il ne nous est pas permis de mettre personne à mort. » —
32 That the words of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what kind of death he was to die.
Afin que fût accomplie la parole par laquelle Jésus avait indiqué de quelle mort il devait mourir. —
33 Pilate therefore went into the palace again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
Pilate entra donc derechef dans le prétoire, et il appela Jésus, et lui dit: « Es-tu le roi des Juifs? »
34 Jesus answered, Dost thou say this of thyself, or did others tell thee concerning me?
Jésus répondit: « Est-ce de toi-même que tu dis cela, ou bien d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi? »
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation and the chief priests delivered thee up to me. What hast thou done?
Pilate répondit: « Est-ce que je suis Juif? C'est ta nation et les grands prêtres qui t'ont livré à moi; qu'as-tu fait? »
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought, that I should not be delivered up to the Jews; but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Jésus répondit: « Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde; si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes satellites auraient combattu afin que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs; mais maintenant mon royaume n'est pas d'ici. »
37 Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest what is true; for I am a king. For this end have I been born, and for this cause have I come into the world, that I may bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth listeneth to my voice.
Pilate lui dit donc: « Tu es donc roi? » Jésus répondit: « Tu le dis; en effet je suis roi. C'est pour rendre témoignage à la vérité que je suis né et que je suis venu dans le monde; quiconque est de la vérité écoute ma voix. »
38 Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find nothing criminal in him.
Pilate lui dit: « Qu'est-ce que la vérité? » Et en disant cela il sortit derechef pour se rendre auprès des Juifs, et il leur dit: « Pour moi, je ne trouve en lui aucun crime;
39 But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: do ye desire, therefore, that I release to you the king of the Jews?
mais c'est votre coutume que je vous relâche quelqu'un à Pâque, voulez-vous donc que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs? »
40 Then they cried out again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
Ils s'écrièrent donc derechef: « Non pas celui-ci, mais Barabbas! » Or Barabbas était un brigand.
