Acts 16
1 And he came to Derbe and Lystra; and lo! a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewess, but whose father was a Greek;
puis il se rendit aussi à Derbe, et à Lystre. Et voici, là se trouvait un disciple nommé Timothée, fils d'une femme juive croyante, mais d'un père grec,
2 who was well a spoken of by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.
et auquel les frères de Lystre et d'Icône rendaient un bon témoignage.
3 Him Paul wished to go forth with him, and took and circumcised him on account of the Jews who were in those places; for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui, et, se l'étant attaché, il le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient dans ces lieux-là, car tous savaient que son père était grec.
4 And as they journeyed through the cities, they delivered to them for their observance the decrees which had been ordained by the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.
Or, dans les villes qu'ils traversaient, ils transmirent, pour qu'on les observât, les décrets rendus par les apôtres et les anciens de Jérusalem.
5 The churches therefore were established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
Quant aux églises, elles s'affermissaient donc dans la foi et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour.
6 And having gone through Phrygia and the Galatian country, on being forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia,
Cependant ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, après avoir été empêchés par le saint esprit d'annoncer la parole en Asie;
7 they came to Mysia, and were attempting to go into Bithynia; but the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them.
mais, étant arrivés près de la Mysie, ils se préparaient à entrer en Bithynie, et l'esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas;
8 And passing by Mysia, they came to Troas.
alors, franchissant la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas,
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. There stood a man of Macedonia beseeching him and saying, Come over into Macedonia and help us.
et une vision apparut de nuit à Paul: un Macédonien se tenait debout et le sollicitait en disant: « Passe en Macédoine pour nous secourir. »
10 And when he had seen the vision, we immediately endeavored to go into Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to publish the glad tidings to them.
Or, quand il eut vu la vision, nous cherchâmes aussitôt à parvenir en Macédoine, concluant que Dieu nous avait appelés à leur annoncer la bonne nouvelle.
11 And setting sail from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis;
Étant donc partis de Troas, nous cinglâmes rapidement vers la Samothrace, et le lendemain nous arrivâmes à Néapolis,
12 and thence to Philippi, which is a chief city of the province of Macedonia, a colony. And we remained in the city some days.
et de là à Philippes, qui est la première ville d'un district de Macédoine, et une colonie. Nous restâmes quelques jours dans cette ville,
13 And on the sabbath-day we went forth out of the gate to a river-side, where was wont to be a place of prayer, and we sat down, and spoke to the women who had assembled.
et le jour du sabbat nous vînmes, hors de la porte, près d'une rivière où nous pensions que se trouvait un lieu de prière, et nous étant assis nous parlions aux femmes qui y étaient rassemblées.
14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, was listening; whose heart the Lord opened to attend to the things which were spoken by Paul.
Et une femme, nommée Lydie, marchande de pourpre de la ville de Thyatire, révérant Dieu, nous écoutait, et le Seigneur ouvrit son cœur pour qu'elle prêtât attention à ce que disait Paul.
15 And when she had been baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be a believer in the Lord, come into my house, and abide. And she constrained us.
Or, dès qu'elle eut été baptisée ainsi que sa famille, elle nous sollicitait en disant: « Puisque vous avez jugé que j'avais foi au Seigneur, venez demeurer chez moi; » et elle nous y contraignit.
16 And it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain bond-maid having a soothsaying spirit met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.
Or, il advint, pendant que nous nous acheminions vers le lieu de prière, qu'une certaine servante possédée d'un esprit ventriloque, laquelle procurait à ses maîtres un profit considérable par ses divinations, nous rencontra.
17 This woman followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, who announce to you the way of salvation.
Cette femme, se mettant à suivre Paul et nous, s'écriait: « Ces hommes-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu très haut, qui vous annoncent le chemin du salut. »
18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, being much displeased, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out immediately.
Or elle fit cela pendant plusieurs jours; mais Paul, importuné, se retourna et dit à l'esprit: « Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d'elle; » et il sortit au moment même.
19 But her masters seeing that the hope of their gain was gone, laid hold of Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the market-place to the rulers;
Et ses maîtres, ayant vu que l'espoir de leur profit s'en était allé, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats,
20 and having brought them before the magistrates, said, These men are grievously disturbing our city, being Jews;
et, après les avoir amenés aux préteurs, ils dirent: « Ces hommes-là troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs,
21 and they teach customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to receive or observe.
et ils proclament des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis, ni de recevoir, ni de suivre, nous qui sommes Romains. »
22 And the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates, tearing off their clothes, commanded to beat them with rods;
Et la foule se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs, leur ayant fait arracher leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'on les battît de verges;
23 and when they had laid on them many stripes, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely;
puis, après leur avoir fait infliger plusieurs coups, ils les jetèrent en prison, en enjoignant au geôlier de les tenir sous bonne garde;
24 who having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
celui-ci, après avoir reçu cette injonction, les jeta dans la prison intérieure et fixa leurs pieds dans les ceps.
25 But at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing praises to God; and the prisoners were listening to them.
Or, sur le minuit, Paul et Silas étant en prière, chantaient des hymnes à Dieu, et les prisonniers les entendaient;
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and all the doors were immediately opened, and the bands of all were loosed.
mais, tout à coup, il se fit un grand tremblement de terre, en sorte que les fondements de la prison en furent ébranlés; puis toutes les portes s'ouvrirent et les chaînes de tous se détachèrent.
27 And the jailer awakening out of sleep, and seeing the prison-doors open, drew his sword, and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
Et le geôlier s'étant éveillé, et ayant vu les portes de la prison ouvertes, tira son épée, et il était sur le point de se tuer, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient enfuis;
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.
mais Paul l'appela à haute voix en disant: « Ne te fais aucun mal; car nous sommes tous ici. »
29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas;
Et ayant demandé de la lumière, il s'élança et se jeta tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas,
30 and having brought them out, he said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
et, les ayant fait sortir, il dit: « Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé? »
31 And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and thou wilt be saved, and thy household.
Et ils lui dirent: « Crois au seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille; »
32 And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
et ils lui annoncèrent la parole de Dieu, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33 And he took them with him at that hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and he was immediately baptized, himself and all that belonged to him.
Et, les ayant pris avec lui à ce moment même de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies, et lui-même fut baptisé immédiatement ainsi que tous les siens;
34 And when he had brought them up into his house, he set food before them, and rejoiced with all his house, having become a believer in God.
puis, les ayant conduits chez lui, il leur servit un repas, et il fut tout réjoui d'avoir cru en Dieu avec toute sa famille.
35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Release those men.
Cependant, quand le jour fut venu, les préteurs dépêchèrent leurs licteurs, en disant: « Élargis ces hommes-là. «
36 And the jailer reported these words to Paul: The magistrates have sent to release you; now therefore come out, and go in peace.
Or le geôlier transmit le message à Paul, en disant: « Les préteurs ont envoyé l'ordre de vous élargir; maintenant donc sortez, et allez en paix. »
37 But Paul said to them, They have publicly beaten us uncondemned, although we are Romans, and have thrust us into prison; and now do they thrust us out secretly? No; but let them come themselves, and bring us out.
Mais Paul leur dit: « Après nous avoir fait battre de verges en public, sans jugement, nous qui sommes des Romains, ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir secrètement! Non certes! Mais qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous mettre en liberté. «
38 And the sergeants reported these words to the magistrates; and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.
Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, et ils furent effrayés en apprenant qu'ils étaient Romains,
39 And they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they entreated them to leave the city.
et ils vinrent les apaiser, et, après les avoir fait sortir, ils les prièrent de quitter la ville.
40 And when they had come out of the prison, they went into the house of Lydia; and when they saw the brethren, they exhorted them, and departed.
Mais, quand ils furent sortis de la prison, ils entrèrent chez Lydie, et, après avoir vu et exhorté les frères, ils partirent.
