1 Corinthians 14
1 Strive to possess love; and desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that of prophesying.
Poursuivez la charité, tout en ambitionnant les dons spirituels, mais surtout celui de prophétie.
2 For he that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue speaketh not to men, but to God; for no one heareth; but in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries;
En effet celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas pour les hommes mais pour Dieu, car personne ne l'entend, mais c'est en esprit qu'il profère des mystères,
3 but he that prophesieth speaketh to men edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
tandis que celui qui prophétise parle aux hommes pour les édifier, et les exhorter, et les consoler.
4 He that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Celui qui parle en langue s'édifie lui-même, tandis que celui qui prophétise édifie l'église.
5 I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, unless he interpret, that the church may receive edification.
Je veux bien que tous vous parliez en langues, mais plus encore que vous prophétisiez. Or celui qui prophétise l'emporte sur celui qui parle en langues, à moins qu'il n'interprète afin que l'église en reçoive de l'édification.
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching?
Et maintenant, frères, si je venais auprès de vous pour vous parler en langues, en quoi vous serais-je utile, à moins que je ne vous parlasse sous forme de révélation, ou de connaissance, ou de prophétie, ou d'instruction?
7 And even things without life that give sound, whether pipe or harp, if they make no distinction in the sounds, how shall that be known which is piped or harped?
Ainsi les objets inanimés qui rendent un son, une flûte par exemple, ou une harpe, s'ils n'expriment une diversité de ton, comment reconnaître ce que joue la flûte, ou ce que joue la harpe?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle?
Et en effet, si une trompette rend un son indistinct, qui est-ce qui se prépare au combat?
9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall that be known which is spoken? For ye will be speaking into the air.
De même aussi, si vous ne faites pas entendre avec la langue des paroles bien distinctes, comment reconnaîtra-t-on ce que vous dites, car vous parlerez en l'air?
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and not one is without meaning.
Combien ne peut-il pas y avoir de variétés d'idiomes dans le monde? et chacun est un langage;
11 If then I know not the meaning of the language, I shall be to him that speaketh a foreigner, and he that speaketh a foreigner to me.
si donc je ne connais pas la valeur de l'idiome, je serai un barbare aux yeux de celui qui le parle, et celui-ci sera un barbare à mes yeux.
12 So also ye, since ye are eager to possess spiritual gifts, be earnest to abound in them to the edification of the church.
Ainsi, vous aussi, puisque vous êtes ambitieux des esprits, cherchez, pour l'édification de l'église, à en posséder le plus qu'il est possible;
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an [[unknown]] tongue pray that he may interpret.
c'est pourquoi, que celui qui parle en langue demande la grâce d'interpréter.
14 For if I pray in an [[unknown]] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Si je prie en langue, mon esprit prie, mais mon intelligence demeure stérile.
15 How stands it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Qu'y a-t-il donc à faire? Je prierai par l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence; je chanterai par l'esprit, je chanterai aussi avec l'intelligence.
16 Else, if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, since he understandeth not what thou art saying?
Autrement, si tu rends grâces par l'esprit, comment celui qui occupe la place du simple fidèle dira-t-il l'Amen après ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait ce que tu dis?
17 For thou indeed givest thanks well; but the other is not edified.
En effet, tu rends, il est vrai, d'excellentes actions de grâces, mais l'autre n'est pas édifié.
18 I thank God, I speak in an [[unknown]] tongue more than ye all;
J'en rends grâces à Dieu: je parle en langues plus que vous tous,
19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might also instruct others, than ten thousand words in an [[unknown]] tongue.
mais j'aimerais mieux proférer dans une assemblée d'église cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, afin d'instruire aussi d'autres personnes, que dix mille paroles en langue.
20 Brethren, do not become children in understanding; yet in malice be children, but in understanding be men.
Frères, ne devenez pas de petits enfants pour le jugement, mais pour la malice restez en bas âge, tandis que pour le jugement il vous faut devenir des hommes.
21 In the Law it is written: “With men of other tongues and with other lips will I speak to this people,
Il est écrit dans la loi: « C'est avec des gens d'une autre langue et avec les lèvres d'autres nations que Je parlerai à ce peuple, et même sous cette forme ils ne M'écouteront pas, dit le Seigneur. »
22 and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.” Wherefore the tongues are for a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
Ainsi donc les langues sont destinées à être un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour les incrédules, tandis que la prophétie s'adresse, non aux incrédules, mais à ceux qui croient.
23 If therefore the whole church be assembled in one place, and all be speaking with tongues, and there come in those who are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
Si donc l'église se réunissait tout entière, et que tous parlassent en langues, les simples fidèles qui pourraient survenir ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes en délire?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that is an unbeliever, or unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is searched through by all,
Au contraire, si tous prophétisent, et qu'il survienne quelque incrédule ou un simple fidèle, il est censuré par tous, il est jugé par tous,
25 the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is indeed within you.
les secrets de son cœur sont mis en lumière, de telle sorte que, tombant la face contre terre, il adorera Dieu, en proclamant que Dieu est réellement au milieu de vous.
26 How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a lesson of instruction, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation; let all things be done for edification.
Qu'y a-t-il donc à faire, frères? Quand vous vous assemblez, chacun a un psaume, a une instruction, a une révélation, a une langue, a une interprétation; que tout se fasse en vue de l'édification.
27 If any one speak in an [[unknown]] tongue, let it be by two, or, at the most, by three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
Quelqu'un parle-t-il en langue, qu'il n'y en ait que deux, ou tout au plus trois, qui le fassent, chacun à son tour, et qu'un seul interprète;
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
mais s'il ne se trouve pas d'interprète, qu'il se taise dans l'assemblée d'église et qu'il parle pour lui-même et pour Dieu.
29 And of the prophets let two or three speak, and let the others judge;
Quant aux prophètes, que deux ou trois prennent la parole et que les autres en jugent;
30 if anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first speaker be silent.
mais si l'un de ceux qui sont assis reçoit une révélation, que le premier se taise;
31 For one by one ye can all prophesy, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.
car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l'un après l'autre, afin que tous soient instruits, et que tous soient encouragés;
32 And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
et les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes,
33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
car Dieu ne veut pas le désordre, mais la paix. Comme dans toutes les églises des saints,
34 let your women keep silence in the churches; for it is not permitted them to speak, but they are to be in subjection, as also saith the Law.
que les femmes se taisent dans les assemblées d'église; car il ne leur est pas permis de parler; mais qu'elles demeurent soumises, comme le dit aussi la loi;
35 And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church.
mais si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque point, qu'elles interrogent chez elles leurs propres maris, car il est malséant pour une femme de parler dans une assemblée d'église.
36 What! Did the word of God come forth from you? Or did it come to you alone?
Ou bien est-ce de chez vous qu'est sortie la parole de Dieu? Est-ce à vous seul qu'elle est parvenue?
37 If any one thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him know surely that the directions I am writing to you are the Lord's;
Si quelqu'un s'imagine être prophète ou être en possession des dons spirituels, qu'il sache que ce que je vous écris est un commandement du seigneur;
38 but if any one be ignorant, let him be ignorant!
mais si quelqu'un l'ignore, qu'il l'ignore!
39 Wherefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues;
Ainsi donc, mes frères, recherchez avec ardeur le don de prophétie, et n'empêchez pas qu'on parle en langues,
40 but let all things be done becomingly, and in order.
mais que tout se fasse avec décence et avec ordre.
