Joshua 3
1 Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they moved from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel. They lodged there before they passed over.
Et le matin Josué se leva, et ils partirent de Sittim et ils arrivèrent au Jourdain, lui et tous les enfants d'Israël, et là ils firent une halte avant de passer.
2 It happened after three days, that the officers went through the midst of the camp;
Et au bout de trois jours les Officiers parcoururent l'intérieur du camp
3 and they commanded the people, saying, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the cohanim the Levites bearing it, then you shall move from your place, and follow it.
et donnèrent les ordres au peuple en ces termes: Dès que vous apercevrez l'Arche d'Alliance de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, portée par les Prêtres, les Lévites, partez vous-mêmes de votre station, et suivez-la. Mais qu'il reste entre vous et Elle un espace d'environ deux mille coudées.
4 However, keep a distance of about two thousand nine hundred fifty-three feet between yourselves and the ark. Do not come near to it, that you may know the way by which you must go; for you have not passed this way before."
Ne vous en rapprochez pas, afin de pouvoir découvrir le chemin où vous devez marcher, car vous n'avez passé par ce chemin ni hier ni avant-hier.
5 Joshua said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you."
Et Josué dit au peuple: Mettez-vous en état de sainteté, car demain l'Éternel opérera des miracles au milieu de vous.
6 Joshua spoke to the cohanim, saying, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people." They took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
Et Josué parla aux Prêtres en ces termes: Transportez l'Arche de l'Alliance et précédez le peuple. Et ils transportèrent l'Arche de l'Alliance et marchèrent en avant du peuple.
7 The LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
Et l'Éternel dit à Josué: Aujourd'hui je veux commencer à te grandir devant les yeux de tout Israël, afin qu'ils comprennent que je suis avec toi, de même que j'ai été avec Moïse.
8 You shall command the cohanim who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, 'When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'"
Et toi, donne cet ordre aux Prêtres qui portent l'Arche de l'Alliance: Quand vous atteindrez la limite des eaux du Jourdain, arrêtez-vous dans le lit du Jourdain.
9 Joshua said to the children of Israel, "Come here, and hear the words of the LORD your God."
Et Josué dit aux enfants d'Israël: Approchez et écoutez les paroles de l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
10 Joshua said, "Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, and the Hethite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you.
Et Josué dit: A ceci vous reconnaîtrez qu'un Dieu Vivant est au milieu de vous, et qu'il chassera devant vous les Cananéens et les Héthiens et les Hévites et les Perizzites et les Girgasites et les Amoréens et les Jébusites:
11 Look, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into the Jordan.
voici, l'Arche de l'Alliance du Seigneur de toute la terre vous devancera dans le Jourdain.
12 Now therefore take twelve men from the children of Israel, one man for each tribe.
Et à présent choisissez-vous douze hommes dans les Tribus d'Israël, un homme par Tribu.
13 It shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the cohanim who bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap."
Et aussitôt que la plante des pieds des Prêtres, porteurs de l'Arche de l'Éternel, Seigneur de toute la terre, se posera dans les eaux du Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain seront coupées dans leur cours, les eaux qui descendent d'en haut, et s'amoncelleront.
14 It happened, when the people moved from their tents to pass over the Jordan, the cohanim who bore the ark of the covenant being before the people,
Et au départ du peuple sorti de ses tentes pour passer le Jourdain, les Prêtres chargés de l'Arche de l'Alliance devançant le peuple,
15 and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the cohanim who bore the ark had dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the time of harvest),
au moment où les porteurs de l'Arche atteignirent le Jourdain, et où se mouillèrent les pieds des Prêtres, porteurs de l'Arche, plongèrent à la limite de l'eau (or le Jourdain est rempli jusqu'au-dessus de ses berges pendant tout le temps de la moisson),
16 that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people passed over right against Jericho.
alors les eaux qui descendaient d'en haut s'arrêtèrent; elles s'élevèrent en un monceau, à une très grande distance, près de Adam, ville située à côté de Tsarthan; et les eaux qui descendaient à la mer de la plaine, la Mer Salée, furent complètement détachées, et le peuple passa vis-à-vis de Jéricho.
17 The cohanim who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.
Et les Prêtres chargés de l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel s'arrêtèrent de pied ferme sur le sec dans le lit du Jourdain, et tout Israël marcha sur le sec, jusqu'à ce que tout le peuple eût achevé de passer le Jourdain.
