1 Kings 20
1 Ben Hadad the king of Aram gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
Cependant Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, ayant trente-deux rois pour auxiliaires, rassembla toutes ses forces, et chevaux et chars, et il s'avança, et mit le siège devant Samarie et l'attaqua.
2 He sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, "Thus says Ben Hadad,
Et il envoya des messagers à Achab, roi d'Israël, dans la ville
3 'Your silver and your gold is mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.'"
et lui tint ce langage: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Je suis maître de ton argent et de ton or, maître de tes femmes et de tes fils, de tes meilleurs biens.
4 The king of Israel answered, "It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have."
Et le roi d'Israël répondit et dit: Comme tu le dis, roi mon seigneur, tu es maître de ma personne et de tout ce que j'ai.
5 The messengers came again, and said, "Ben Hadad says, 'I sent indeed to you, saying, "You shall deliver me your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your children;
Et les messagers revinrent et dirent: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Si je t'ai envoyé dire: Livre-moi ton argent et ton or, et tes femmes et tes fils,
6 but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house, and the houses of your servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in their eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away."'"
c'est que demain à pareille heure j'enverrai chez toi mes serviteurs pour fouiller ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs et mettre la main sur tout ce qui charme tes yeux et l'enlever.
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, "Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I did not deny him."
Alors le roi d'Israël fit assembler tous les Anciens du pays et dit: Sachez donc et considérez qu'il cherche [notre] ruine, puisqu'il m'a envoyé une sommation par rapport à mes femmes et à mes fils, et à mon argent et à mon or que je ne lui ai point refusé.
8 All the elders and all the people said to him, "Do not listen, neither consent."
Et tous les Anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: N'obéis point et ne consens point!
9 Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, "Tell my lord the king, 'All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do.'" The messengers departed, and brought him back the message.
Il dit donc aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: Je ferai tout ce que tu as demandé à ton serviteur en premier lieu, mais ceci, je ne saurais le faire.
10 Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, "The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me."
Et les messagers partirent et reportèrent la réponse. Alors Ben-Hadad députa vers lui pour lui dire: Qu'ainsi me fassent les dieux et pis encore, si la poussière de Samarie suffit à remplir les mains de tout le monde qui me suit!
11 The king of Israel answered, "Tell him, 'Do not let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.'"
Et le roi d'Israël répondit et dit: Celui qui se ceint ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui se déceint.
12 It happened, when Ben Hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, "Prepare to attack." They prepared to attack the city.
Et Ben-Hadad entendant cette réponse (or il était à boire avec les rois dans les pavillons) dit à ses serviteurs: Faites les dispositions! Et ils firent les dispositions pour l'assaut de la ville.
13 Look, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'Have you seen all this great multitude? Look, I will deliver it into your hand this day; and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"
Et voilà qu'un prophète s'approcha d'Achab, roi d'Israël, et dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: As-tu vu toute cette grande multitude? Eh bien! Je vais aujourd'hui la livrer à tes mains, afin que tu saches que je suis l'Éternel.
14 Ahab said, "By whom?" He said, "Thus says the LORD, 'By the young men of the governors of the districts.'" Then he said, "Who shall begin the battle?" He answered, "You."
Et Achab dit: Par qui? Et il reprit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Par les valets des chefs des provinces. Et Achab dit: Qui engagera le combat? Et il répondit: Toi.
15 Then he mustered the young men of the governors of the districts, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
Alors il passa en revue les valets des chefs des provinces et il s'en trouva deux cent trente-deux. Et après eux il passa en revue toutes les troupes, tous les enfants d'Israël, au nombre de sept mille.
16 They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.
Et ils firent leur sortie à midi. Cependant Ben-Hadad buvait à être ivre dans les pavillons avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires.
17 the young men of the governors of the districts went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, "Men are coming out from Samaria."
Et les valets des chefs des provinces sortirent les premiers. Alors Ben-Hadad fit aller aux informations, et il reçut ce rapport: Des gens ont fait une sortie de Samarie.
18 He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive."
Et il dit: S'ils sont sortis pour la paix, saisissez-les vivants, et, s'ils sont sortis pour le combat, saisissez-les vivants.
19 So these went out of the city, the young men of the governors of the districts, and the army which followed them.
Ceux-là donc sortirent de la place, les valets des chefs des provinces, puis l'armée qui les suivait.
20 They each killed his man. The Arameans fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen.
Et ils battirent chacun son homme, et les Syriens prirent la fuite, et les Israélites les poursuivirent, et Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, se sauva sur son cheval avec des cavaliers.
21 The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans with a great slaughter.
Et le roi d'Israël se mit en mouvement, et mit en déroute les chevaux et les chars, et fit essuyer aux Syriens une grande défaite.
22 The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, "Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Aram will come up against you."
Alors le prophète s'approcha du roi d'Israël et lui dit: Allons! sois résolu! songe et avise à ce que tu feras; car, au retour de l'année, le roi de Syrie marchera contre toi.
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, "Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
Et les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: Leurs dieux sont les dieux des montagnes; c'est pourquoi ils l'ont emporté sur nous; mais peut-être nous battant avec eux dans la plaine l'emporterons-nous sur eux.
24 Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.
Or, voici ce que tu as à faire: ôte chacun des rois de sa position, et mets les gouverneurs à leur place,
25 Muster an army, like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than them." He listened to their voice, and did so.
et toi, lève une armée égale à celle que tu as perdue, et autant de cavalerie que tu avais de cavalerie, et autant de chars que tu avais de chars, et fais-nous combattre avec eux dans la plaine; peut-être l'emporterons-nous sur eux. Et il écouta leurs avis et fit ainsi.
26 It happened at the return of the year, that Ben Hadad mustered the Arameans, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
Et, au retour de l'année, Ben-Hadad passa les Syriens en revue et s'avança jusqu'à Aphek pour se mesurer avec Israël.
27 The children of Israel were mustered, and were provisioned, and went against them. The children of Israel camped before them like two little flocks of young goats; but the Arameans filled the country.
Et les enfants d'Israël furent aussi passés en revue et avitaillés, et ils marchèrent à leur rencontre, et les enfants d'Israël campèrent en face d'eux, pareils à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient le pays.
28 A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because the Arameans have said, "The LORD is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys"; therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"
Alors l'homme de Dieu s'approcha et parla au roi d'Israël en ces termes: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: L'Éternel est Dieu des montagnes, mais non Dieu des vallées, je livrerai toute cette grande multitude-là à tes mains, afin que vous sachiez que je suis l'Éternel.
29 They camped one over against the other seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Arameans in one day.
Et ils furent campés les uns vis-à-vis des autres pendant sept jours, et le septième jour il y eut rencontre en bataille, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent aux Syriens cent mille hommes de pied en une journée.
30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner room.
Et les survivants s'enfuirent à Aphek dans la ville, et la muraille croula sur vingt-sept mille hommes, les survivants, et Ben-Hadad s'enfuit, et étant entré dans la ville, il allait de chambre en chambre.
31 His servants said to him, "See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life."
Alors ses serviteurs lui dirent: Voici, nous avons appris que les rois de la maison d'Israël sont des rois cléments; entourons donc nos reins de cilices et nos têtes de cordes, et présentons-nous au roi d'Israël; peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie.
32 So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live.'" He said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."
Et ils ceignirent leurs reins de cilices, et leurs têtes de cordes, et ils parurent devant le roi d'Israël et dirent: Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad dit: Laisse-moi la vie! Et il répondit: Est-il encore vivant? Il est mon frère!
33 Now the men were looking for an omen, and they seized upon it from him, and they said, "Ben Hadad is your brother." Then he said, "Go, bring him." Then Ben Hadad came out to him, and he had him come up into the chariot.
Et ces hommes reçurent cela comme un bon augure, et ils se hâtèrent de le prendre au mot et dirent: Ben-Hadad est donc ton frère! Et il répondit: Venez! amenez-le. Alors Ben-Hadad se présenta à lui et il le fit monter à côté de lui sur son char.
34 Ben Hadad said to him, "The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria." "I," said Ahab, "will let you go with this covenant." So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.
Et [Ben-Hadad] lui dit: Je te restituerai les villes que mon père a enlevées à ton père, et tu auras tes rues à Damas, comme mon père avait ses rues à Samarie. Et moi [dit Achab], je te laisserai aller sous la foi d'une alliance. Et il lui accorda une capitulation et le laissa partir.
35 A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the word of the LORD, "Please strike me." The man refused to strike him.
Or, l'un des fils des prophètes dit à son condisciple par ordre de l'Éternel: Bats-moi donc! Mais l'autre refusa de le battre.
36 Then he said to him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, look, as soon as you are departed from me, a lion shall kill you." As soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him.
Alors il dit à celui-ci: Parce que tu n'as pas obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, voici, quand tu m'auras quitté, tu seras abattu par le lion. Et quand il l'eut quitté, le lion le rencontra et l'abattit.
37 Then he found another man, and said, "Please strike me." The man struck him, smiting and wounding him.
Et il trouva un autre homme à qui il dit: Bats-moi donc! Et l'homme le battit et le blessa.
38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.
Alors le prophète alla se placer sur le chemin du roi, et il se déguisa en abaissant son turban sur ses yeux.
39 As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said, "Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and look, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, 'Guard this man. If by any means he be missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.'
Et au passage du roi il cria vers lui et dit: Ton serviteur faisait son service dans la mêlée du combat, lorsque, voilà qu'un homme tire de côté, m'amenant un homme et me dit: Garde cet homme-ci. S'il vient à manquer, ta vie répondra de sa vie, ou bien tu paieras un talent d'argent.
40 As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone." The king of Israel said to him, "So your judgment shall be; you yourself have decided it."
Et comme ton serviteur était occupé çà et là, l'homme disparut. Et le roi d'Israël lui dit: C'est ton jugement! Tu as décidé toi-même.
41 He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets.
Alors vite il releva son turban de dessus ses yeux, et le roi d'Israël reconnut en lui l'un des prophètes.
42 He said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.'"
Et il dit au roi: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Parce que tu as laissé échapper de ta main l'homme que j'avais anathématisé, ta vie répondra de sa vie, et ton peuple, de son peuple.
43 The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
Et le roi d'Israël rentra dans sa maison, chagrin et irrité, puis il gagna Samarie.
