1 Corinthians 10
1 Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
兄弟たちよ。このことを知らずにいてもらいたくない。わたしたちの先祖はみな雲の下におり、みな海を通り、
2 and were all baptized into Mushe in the cloud and in the sea;
みな雲の中、海の中で、モーセにつくバプテスマを受けた。
3 and all ate the same spiritual food;
また、みな同じ霊の食物を食べ、
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Meshikha.
みな同じ霊の飲み物を飲んだ。すなわち、彼らについてきた霊の岩から飲んだのであるが、この岩はキリストにほかならない。
5 However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
しかし、彼らの中の大多数は、神のみこころにかなわなかったので、荒野で滅ぼされてしまった。
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
これらの出来事は、わたしたちに対する警告であって、彼らが悪をむさぼったように、わたしたちも悪をむさぼることのないためなのである。
7 Neither be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play."
だから、彼らの中のある者たちのように、偶像礼拝者になってはならない。すなわち、「民は座して飲み食いをし、また立って踊り戯れた」と書いてある。
8 Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.
また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは不品行をしてはならない。不品行をしたため倒された者が、一日に二万三千人もあった。
9 Neither let us test the Meshikha, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.
また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは主を試みてはならない。主を試みた者は、へびに殺された。
10 Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.
また、ある者たちがつぶやいたように、つぶやいてはならない。つぶやいた者は、「死の使」に滅ぼされた。
11 Now these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come. (aiōn g165)
これらの事が彼らに起ったのは、他に対する警告としてであって、それが書かれたのは、世の終りに臨んでいるわたしたちに対する訓戒のためである。 (aiōn g165)
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he does not fall.
だから、立っていると思う者は、倒れないように気をつけるがよい。
13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
あなたがたの会った試錬で、世の常でないものはない。神は真実である。あなたがたを耐えられないような試錬に会わせることはないばかりか、試錬と同時に、それに耐えられるように、のがれる道も備えて下さるのである。
14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
それだから、愛する者たちよ。偶像礼拝を避けなさい。
15 I speak as to wise people. Judge what I say.
賢明なあなたがたに訴える。わたしの言うことを、自ら判断してみるがよい。
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a sharing of the blood of Meshikha? The bread which we break, is it not a sharing of the body of Meshikha?
わたしたちが祝福する祝福の杯、それはキリストの血にあずかることではないか。わたしたちがさくパン、それはキリストのからだにあずかることではないか。
17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.
パンが一つであるから、わたしたちは多くいても、一つのからだなのである。みんなの者が一つのパンを共にいただくからである。
18 Consider Israyel according to the flesh. Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
肉によるイスラエルを見るがよい。供え物を食べる人たちは、祭壇にあずかるのではないか。
19 What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
すると、なんと言ったらよいか。偶像にささげる供え物は、何か意味があるのか。また、偶像は何かほんとうにあるものか。
20 But I say that the things which pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I do not desire that you would have fellowship with demons.
そうではない。人々が供える物は、悪霊ども、すなわち、神ならぬ者に供えるのである。わたしは、あなたがたが悪霊の仲間になることを望まない。
21 You cannot both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.
主の杯と悪霊どもの杯とを、同時に飲むことはできない。主の食卓と悪霊どもの食卓とに、同時にあずかることはできない。
22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
それとも、わたしたちは主のねたみを起そうとするのか。わたしたちは、主よりも強いのだろうか。
23 "All things are lawful," but not all things are profitable. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが益になるわけではない。すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが人の徳を高めるのではない。
24 Let no one seek his own, but his neighbor's good.
だれでも、自分の益を求めないで、ほかの人の益を求めるべきである。
25 Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience,
すべて市場で売られている物は、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。
26 for "the earth is the Lord's, and its fullness."
地とそれに満ちている物とは、主のものだからである。
27 But if one of those who do not believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience.
もしあなたがたが、不信者のだれかに招かれて、そこに行こうと思う場合、自分の前に出される物はなんでも、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。
28 But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience.
しかし、だれかがあなたがたに、これはささげ物の肉だと言ったなら、それを知らせてくれた人のために、また良心のために、食べないがよい。
29 Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other's conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience?
良心と言ったのは、自分の良心ではなく、他人の良心のことである。なぜなら、わたしの自由が、どうして他人の良心によって左右されることがあろうか。
30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks?
もしわたしが感謝して食べる場合、その感謝する物について、どうして人のそしりを受けるわけがあろうか。
31 Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
だから、飲むにも食べるにも、また何事をするにも、すべて神の栄光のためにすべきである。
32 Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God;
ユダヤ人にもギリシヤ人にも神の教会にも、つまずきになってはいけない。
33 even as I also please all people in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
わたしもまた、何事にもすべての人に喜ばれるように努め、多くの人が救われるために、自分の益ではなく彼らの益を求めている。
