< Luke 10 >

1 And after these things, the LORD also appointed seventy others, and sent them by twos before His face, to every city and place to where He Himself was about to come,
After this, the Master appointed seventy-two other disciples, and sent them on as his messengers, two and two, in advance, to every town and place that he was himself intending to visit.
2 then He said to them, “The harvest [is] indeed abundant, but the workmen few; implore then the Lord of the harvest, that He may put forth workmen to His harvest.
‘The harvest,’ he said, ‘is abundant, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray to the owner of the harvest to send labourers to gather in his harvest.
3 Go away; behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves;
Now, go. Remember, I am sending you out as my messengers like lambs among wolves.
4 carry no bag, no leather pouch, nor sandals; and greet no one on the way;
Do not take a purse with you, or a bag, or sandals; and do not stop to greet anyone on your journey.
5 and into whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house;
Whatever house you go to stay at, begin by praying for a blessing on it.
6 and if indeed there may be there the son of peace, your peace will rest on it; and if not so, it will turn back on you.
Then, if anyone there is deserving of a blessing, your blessing will rest on him; but if not, it will come back on yourselves.
7 And remain in that house, eating and drinking the things they have, for worthy [is] the workman of his hire; do not go from house to house,
Remain at that same house, and eat and drink whatever they offer you; for the worker is worth their wages. Do not keep changing from one house to another.
8 and into whatever city you enter, and they may receive you, eat the things set before you,
Whatever town you visit, if the people welcome you, eat what is set before you;
9 and heal the ailing in it, and say to them, The Kingdom of God has come near to you.
cure the sick there, and tell people that the kingdom of God is close at hand.
10 And into whatever city you enter, and they may not receive you, having gone forth to its broad places, say,
But, whatever town you go to visit, if the people do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say
11 And the dust that has cleaved to us from your city, we wipe off against you, but know this, that the Kingdom of God has come near to you;
“We wipe off the dust of your town which has clung to Our feet; still, be assured that the kingdom of God is close at Hand.”
12 and I say to you that it will be more tolerable for Sodom in that day than for that city.
I tell you that the doom of Sodom will be more bearable on that day than the doom of that town.
13 Woe to you, Chorazin; woe to you, Bethsaida; for if the mighty works that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they had converted long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes;
Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For, if the miracles which have been done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have sat in sackcloth and ashes and repented long ago.
14 but it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.
Yet the doom of Tyre and Sidon will be more bearable at the judgment than yours.
15 And you, Capernaum, which were exalted to Heaven, you will be brought down to Hades. (Hadēs g86)
And you, Capernaum! Will you exalt yourself to heaven? You will be flung down to Hades. (Hadēs g86)
16 He who is hearing you, hears Me; and he who is putting you away, puts Me away; and he who is putting Me away, puts away Him who sent Me.”
Anyone who listens to you is listening to me, and anyone who rejects you is rejecting me; while the person who rejects me is rejecting him who sent me as his messenger.’
17 And the seventy turned back with joy, saying, “Lord, and the demons are being subjected to us in Your Name”;
When the seventy-two returned, they exclaimed joyfully, ‘Master, even the demons submit to us when we use your name.’
18 and He said to them, “I was beholding Satan having fallen as lightning from Heaven;
And Jesus replied, ‘I have had visions of Satan, fallen, like lightning from the heavens.
19 behold, I give to you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing by any means will hurt you;
Remember, I have given you the power to trample on snakes and scorpions, and to meet all the strength of the Enemy. Nothing will ever harm you in any way.
20 but do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subjected to you, but rejoice rather that your names were written in the heavens.”
Yet do not rejoice in the fact that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been enrolled in heaven.’
21 In that hour Jesus was glad in the Spirit and said, “I confess to You, Father, Lord of Heaven and of earth, that You hid these things from wise men and understanding, and revealed them to babies; yes, Father, because so it became good pleasure before You.
At that same time, moved to exultation by the Holy Spirit, Jesus said: ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that, though you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them to the childlike! Yes, Father, I thank you that this has seemed good to you.
22 All things were delivered up to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may resolve to reveal [Him].”
Everything has been committed to me by my Father; nor does anyone know who the Son is, except the Father, or who the Father is, except the Son and those to whom the Son may choose to reveal him.’
23 And having turned to the disciples, He said, by themselves, “Blessed the eyes that are perceiving what you perceive;
Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said to them alone, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you are seeing;
24 for I say to you that many prophets and kings wished to see what you perceive, and did not see, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear.”
for, I tell you, many prophets and kings wished for the sight of the things which you are seeing, yet never heard them.’
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, trying Him, and saying, “Teacher, what having done, will I inherit continuous life?” (aiōnios g166)
Just then a student of the Law came forward to test Jesus further. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do if I am to gain eternal life?’ (aiōnios g166)
26 And He said to him, “In the Law what has been written? How do you read [it]?”
‘What is said in the Law?’ answered Jesus. ‘What do you read there?’
27 And he answering said, “You will love the LORD your God out of all your heart, and out of all your soul, and out of all your strength, and out of all your understanding, and your neighbor as yourself.”
His reply was – ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as you love yourself.’
28 And He said to him, “You answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
‘You have answered right,’ said Jesus, ‘Do that, and you will live.’
29 And he, willing to declare himself righteous, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
But the man, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’
30 And Jesus having taken up [the word], said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and having stripped him and inflicted blows, they went away, leaving [him] half dead.
To which Jesus replied, ‘A man was once going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him of everything, and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.
31 And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down in that way, and having seen him, he passed over on the opposite side;
As it chanced, a priest was going down by that road. He saw the man, but passed by on the opposite side.
32 and in like manner also, a Levite, having been around the place, having come and seen, passed over on the opposite side.
A Levite, too, did the same; he came up to the spot, but, when he saw the man, passed by on the opposite side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came along him, and having seen him, he was moved with compassion,
But a Samaritan, traveling that way, came upon the man, and, when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.
34 and having come near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and having lifted him up on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and was careful of him;
He went to him and bound up his wounds, dressing them with oil and wine, and then put him on his own mule, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 and on the next day, going forth, taking out two denarii, he gave to the innkeeper and said to him, Be careful of him, and whatever you may spend more, I, in my coming again, will give back to you.
The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. “Take care of him,” he said, “and whatever more you may spend I will myself repay you on my way back.”
36 Who, then, of these three, seems to you to have become neighbor of him who fell among the robbers?”
Now which, do you think, of these three men,’ asked Jesus, ‘proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?’
37 And he said, “He who did the kindness with him,” then Jesus said to him, “Be going on, and you be doing in like manner.”
‘The one that took pity on him,’ was the answer; at which Jesus said, ‘Go and do the same yourself.’
38 And it came to pass, in their going on, that He entered into a certain village, and a certain woman, by name Martha, received Him into her house,
As they continued their journey, Jesus came to a village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him to her house.
39 and she also had a sister, called Mary, who also, having seated herself beside the feet of Jesus, was hearing the word,
She had a sister called Mary, who seated herself at the Master’s feet, and listened to his teaching;
40 and Martha was distracted about much serving, and having stood by Him, she said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister left me alone to serve? Say then to her that she may partake along with me.”
but Martha was distracted by the many preparations that she was making. So she went up to Jesus and said, ‘Master, do you approve of my sister’s leaving me to make preparations alone? Tell her to help me.’
41 And Jesus answering said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and disquieted about many things,
‘Martha, Martha,’ replied the Master, ‘you are anxious and trouble yourself about many things;
42 but of one thing there is need, and Mary chose the good part; that will not be taken away from her.”
but only a few are necessary, or rather one. Mary has chosen the good part, and it will not be taken away from her.’
