Psalms 8

1 “To the chief musician upon Gittith, a psalm of David.” O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth! thou who hast set thy majesty above the heavens.

Voor muziekbegeleiding: met de gittiet. Een psalm van David. Jahweh, onze Heer, Hoe heerlijk is uw Naam over heel de aarde! Laat mij uw glorie bezingen hoog aan de hemel:

2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou founded [thy] might, because of thy opponents, that thou mightest bring to silence the enemy and him that seeketh vengeance.

Uit de mond van kind en zuigeling stemt Gij U een loflied aan, Om uw vijand te verstommen, Uw tegenstanders en haters.

3 When I behold thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast established: —

Als ik de hemelen zie, het werk uwer vingers, De maan en de sterren, die Gij een plaats hebt bereid:

4 What is the mortal, that thou rememberest him? and the son of man, that thou thinkest of him:

Wat is dan een mens, dat Gij hem zoudt gedenken, Een mensenkind, dat Gij acht op hem slaat?

5 Yet thou hast made him but a little less than angels, and hast crowned him with honor and glory.

Toch hebt Gij hem haast tot een godheid gemaakt, Hem met glorie en luister gekroond.

6 Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; every thing hast thou placed beneath his feet:

Gij hebt hem gesteld over het werk uwer handen, En alles aan zijn voeten gelegd:

7 Flocks and herds altogether, and also the beasts of the field;

Al de schapen en runderen, En de beesten in het wild;

8 The birds of heaven, and the fishes of the sea, whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

De vogels in de lucht en de vissen in zee, Al wat de paden der zeeën bewandelt.

9 O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth!

Jahweh, onze Heer, Hoe heerlijk is uw Naam over heel de aarde!
