Nahum 1
1 The doom of Nineveh, The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
De godsspraak over Ninive. Het boek van het visioen van Nahum uit Elkosj.
2 A God watchful and avenging is the Lord; an avenger is the Lord, and full of fury; the Lord taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and keepeth in mind the deeds of his enemies.
Een naijverig God, een wreker is Jahweh, Een wreker is Jahweh, vol gramschap; Jahweh wreekt zich op die Hem weerstaat, Is onverbiddelijk voor zijn vijanden.
3 The Lord is long-suffering, and great in power, but he will by no means clear the guilty: the Lord—in the whirlwind and in the storm is his way, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
Wel is Jahweh lankmoedig, Maar groot ook in kracht, Hij laat niets ongestraft; Zijn weg loopt door storm en orkaan, De wolken zijn het stof van zijn voeten.
4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and all the rivers he drieth up: Bashan then withereth, with Carmel, and the flowers of Lebanon wither.
Hij dreigt de zee, en droogt ze uit, En al haar stromen legt Hij bloot; Basjan en Karmel kwijnen weg, Het groen van de Libanon verwelkt.
5 Mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away; and the earth is lifted up at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
De bergen rillen voor Hem, De heuvelen smelten; De aarde rijst op voor zijn aanschijn, De wereld met al haar bewoners.
6 Before his indignation who can stand? and who can subsist before the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken down by him.
Wie houdt stand voor zijn gramschap, Wie kan zijn grimmige toorn weerstaan? Zijn woede stort zich uit als een vuur, De rotsen splijten voor Hem uiteen!
7 The Lord is good, a strong-hold on the day of distress; and he knoweth those that trust in him.
Jahweh is goed voor die op Hem hopen, Een toevlucht in tijden van nood; Hij kent, die tot Hem hun toevlucht nemen,
8 But with an overflowing flood will he utterly destroy the place of [Nineveh], and his enemies will he pursue with darkness.
Als de branding woedt. Maar Hij vernielt, die tegen Hem opstaan, En zijn vijanden jaagt Hij de duisternis in;
9 What will you devise against the Lord? he is bringing about an utter destruction, the distress shall not rise up twice.
Wat plannen gij ook tegen Jahweh smeedt, Hij maakt er een eind aan. Geen tweede maal richt Hij zich op
10 For they, like thorns interwoven, and as men made drunken in their drinking bout, shall be entirely consumed as dry stubble.
Want de benauwing duurt voort; De doornen liggen op een hoop, De slempers beschonken. Als droge stoppels worden verteerd,
11 There is gone forth out of thee he that devised evil against the Lord, the counsellor of infamous things.
Die van u zijn uitgegaan, Om kwaad tegen Jahweh te beramen, En boze plannen te smeden!
12 Thus hath said the Lord, Though they be complete, and ever so many, nevertheless shall they be cut down, and it shall be over [with them]: and if even I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
Zo spreekt Jahweh: Al zijn ze nog zo voltallig en sterk, Ze worden weggemaaid en verdwijnen; Ik verneder u, zodat Ik het niet opnieuw hoef te doen.
13 For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and thy bonds will I tear asunder.
Nu breek Ik uw staf, En ruk de ketens van u in stukken. Jahweh heeft het over u beslist:
14 But against thee hath the Lord decreed, that no heir of thy name shall be any more: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven and the molten image; I will prepare thy grave [there]; for thou art made vile.
Uw naam wordt niet meer voortgeplant! Uit uw godentempel Zal Ik de gesneden en gegoten beelden vernielen, En Ik maak uw graf Tot een schandeplek!
15 Behold, upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, Celebrate thy feasts, O Judah, fulfill thy vows; for never more shall the wicked pass again through thee, he is utterly cut off.
Zie, op de bergen de voeten van den vreugdebode, Die vrede verkondigt: Vier uw feesten, Juda, volbreng uw geloften, Belial zal niet meer tegen u woeden, hij ligt vernield!
