Deuteronomy 23
1 He that is wounded in the testicles, or hath his privy member cut, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord.
Geen eunuch of ontmande mag tot de gemeente van Jahweh worden toegelaten.
2 One born from prohibited connections shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even the tenth generation of him shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord.
Ook mag geen bastaard tot de gemeente van Jahweh worden toegelaten, zelfs niet in het tiende geslacht.
3 An 'Ammonite and a Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even the tenth generation of him shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord, for ever;
Geen Ammoniet en Moabiet mag ooit tot de gemeente van Jahweh worden toegelaten, zelfs niet in hun tiende geslacht.
4 For the reason, that they met you not with bread and with water on the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because he hired against thee Bil'am the son of Beor of Pethor in Mesopotamia, to curse thee;
Want bij uw uittocht uit Egypte hebben zij u onderweg geen brood en water willen verschaffen, terwijl Moab bovendien Balaäm, den zoon van Beor, uit Petor van Aram-Naharáim voor geld heeft ontboden, om u te vervloeken.
5 But the Lord thy God would not hearken unto Bil'am; and the Lord thy God changed unto thee the curse into a blessing, because the Lord thy God loved thee.
Wel heeft Jahweh, uw God, niet naar Balaäm willen luisteren, en de vloek voor u in zegen veranderd, omdat Jahweh, uw God, u beminde,
6 Thou shalt not seek their peace and their welfare all thy days, for ever.
maar toch moogt gij in der eeuwigheid niet hun geluk en welvaart bevorderen.
7 Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother; thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; because thou wast a stranger in his land.
Voor den Edomiet behoeft ge geen afschuw te hebben, want hij is uw broeder; evenmin voor den Egyptenaar, omdat gij als vreemdeling in zijn land hebt vertoefd.
8 The children that are born unto them in the third generation, may enter of them into the congregation of the Lord.
De zonen, die hun worden geboren, mogen in het derde geslacht tot de gemeente van Jahweh worden toegelaten.
9 When thou goest forth into camp against thy enemies, then keep thyself from every evil thing.
Wanneer gij u in een legerplaats bevindt, om tegen uw vijanden op te trekken, moet gij er voor zorgen, niets onwelvoegelijks te doen.
10 If there be among thee any man, that is not clean by reason of an occurrence by night; then shall he go abroad to without the camp, he shall not come within the camp;
Wanneer er dus iemand onder u is, die door wat hem des nachts overkwam, onrein is geworden, dan moet hij zich uit de legerplaats verwijderen. Hij mag niet in de legerplaats terugkomen,
11 But it shall be, that toward evening he shall bathe himself in water; and when the sun goeth down, he may come into the midst of the camp.
eer hij zich bij het vallen van de avond met water heeft gewassen; eerst als de zon is ondergegaan, mag hij in de legerplaats terugkeren.
12 And a place shalt thou have without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad:
Ook moet gij buiten het legerkamp een gelegenheid hebben, waar gij uw behoefte kunt doen.
13 And a spade shalt thou have with thy weapons: and it shall be, when thou sittest abroad, that thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt afterward cover that which cometh from thee;
Gij moet ook een pin aan uw gordel hebben, om een gat te graven, wanneer gij buiten gaat zitten, en om er uw behoefte weer mee te bedekken.
14 For the Lord thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee and to give up thy enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy; that he see no unseemly thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
Want Jahweh, uw God, vertoeft in uw kamp, om u te redden en uw vijanden aan u over te leveren. Uw legerplaats moet dus heilig zijn, opdat Hij niets onwelvoegelijks daarin ziet, en zich van u afkeert.
15 Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant who may escape unto thee from his master;
Gij moogt een slaaf, die van zijn heer naar u is gevlucht, niet aan zijn meester uitleveren.
16 With thee shall he dwell, in the midst of thee, in the place which he may choose in any one of thy gates, where it seemeth best to him: thou shalt not oppress him.
Hij zal te midden van u blijven wonen op een plaats, die hij verkiest, in een van uw steden, naar zijn goeddunken; ge moogt hem niet verdrukken.
17 There shall not be a prostitute of the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be a sodomite of the sons of Israel.
Er mag geen tempeldeerne onder de dochters van Israël zijn, en geen schandjongen onder de zonen van Israël.
18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a harlot, or the price of a dog, into the house of the Lord thy God for any vow; for both of these are equally an abomination unto the Lord thy God.
Gij moogt geen deernen- en hondenloon in de tempel van Jahweh, uw God, brengen tot voldoening van geloften; want beide zijn een afschuw voor Jahweh, uw God.
19 Thou shalt not take interest from thy brother, interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest:
Gij moogt van uw broeder geen rente nemen, geen rente van geld, van levensmiddelen, of van iets, waarvoor men rente kan vragen.
20 From an alien thou mayest take interest; but from thy brother thou shalt not take interest; in order that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the acquisition of thy hand, in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
Van een buitenlander moogt ge rente nemen, maar niet van uw broeder, opdat Jahweh, uw God, u moge zegenen bij al wat gij doet in het land, dat gij nu in bezit gaat nemen.
21 When thou makest a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not delay to pay it; for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.
Wanneer ge aan Jahweh, uw God, een gelofte doet, talm dan niet, ze ook te volbrengen; want Jahweh, uw God, zal ze van u blijven eisen, en er zal schuld op u rusten.
22 But if thou forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.
Wanneer ge geen gelofte doet, rust er ook geen schuld op u;
23 What is gone out of thy lips shalt thou keep and perform, as thou hast vowed unto the Lord thy God voluntarily, as thou hast spoken with thy mouth.
maar uw woord moet ge nauwgezet houden, juist zoals gij het Jahweh, uw God, vrijwillig beloofd hebt, en het met uw eigen mond hebt gesproken.
24 When thou comest into thy neighbor's vineyard, thou mayest eat grapes at thy own pleasure, till thou have enough; but into thy vessel shalt thou not put any.
Wanneer gij in de wijngaard van uw naaste komt, moogt ge druiven eten, zoveel ge wilt, tot gij genoeg hebt, maar niets in uw mand leggen.
25 When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbor, thou mayest pluck ears with thy hand; but a sickle shall thou not move over thy neighbor's standing corn.
En wanneer ge door het korenveld van een ander gaat, moogt ge met uw hand aren plukken, maar niet de sikkel slaan in het koren van uw naaste.
