Deuteronomy 20

1 When thou goest out to battle against thy enemies, and thou seest horse, and chariot, people more in number than thou: be not afraid of them; for the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Quando saires à peleja contra teus inimigos, e vires cavalos, e carros, e povo maior em número do que tu, deles não terás temor; pois o Senhor teu Deus, que te tirou da terra do Egito, está contigo.

2 And it shall be, when ye come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;

E será que, quando vos achegardes à peleja, o sacerdote se adiantará, e falará ao povo,

3 And he shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye come nigh this day unto the battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and be not downcast, and do not tremble because of them:

E dir-lhe-á: Ouve, ó Israel, hoje vos achegais à peleja contra os vossos inimigos: que se não amoleça o vosso coração; não temais nem tremais, nem vos aterroriseis diante deles,

4 For the Lord your God it is who goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to help you.

Pois o Senhor vosso Deus é o que vai convosco, a pelejar contra os vossos inimigos, para salvar-vos.

5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there who hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Então os oficiais falarão ao povo, dizendo: Qual é o homem que edificou casa nova e ainda a não consagrou? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro a consagre.

6 And what man is there who hath planted a vineyard, and hath not redeemed it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man redeem it.

E qual é o homem que plantou uma vinha e ainda não logrou fruto dela? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro o logre.

7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

E qual é o homem que está desposado com alguma mulher e ainda a não recebeu? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que porventura não morra na peleja e algum outro homem a receba.

8 And the officers shall speak yet farther unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, that the heart of his brethren become not as faint as his heart.

E continuarão os oficiais a falar ao povo, dizendo: Qual é o homem medroso e de coração tímido? vá, e torne-se à sua casa, para que o coração de seus irmãos se não derreta como o seu coração.

9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of the armies at the head of the people.

E será que, quando os oficiais acabarem de falar ao povo, então ordenarão os maiorais dos exércitos na dianteira do povo.

10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to make war against it, then summon it with words of peace.

Quando te achegares a alguma cidade a combate-la, apregoar-lhe-ás a paz.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee an answer of peace, and open [its gates] unto thee: then shall it be, that all the people that are found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

E será que, se te responder em paz, e te abrir, todo o povo que se achar nela te será tributário e te servirá.

12 But if it will not make peace with thee, and wageth war against thee; then shalt thou besiege it;

Porém, se ela não fizer paz contigo, mas antes te fizer guerra, então a sitiarás.

13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thy hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;

E o Senhor teu Deus a dará na tua mão; e todo o macho que houver nela passarás ao fio da espada,

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that may be in the city, all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as booty unto thyself; and thou shalt enjoy the spoil of thy enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

Salvo somente as mulheres, e as crianças, e os animais; e tudo o que houver na cidade, todo o seu despojo, tomarás para ti; e comerás o despojo dos teus inimigos, que te deu o Senhor teu Deus.

15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Assim farás a todas as cidades que estiverem mui longe de ti, que não forem das cidades destas nações.

16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, shalt thou not let live a single soul.

Porém, das cidades destas nações, que o Senhor teu Deus te dá em herança, nenhuma coisa que tem fôlego deixarás com vida;

17 But thou shalt utterly devote them; namely, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee;

Antes destrui-las-ás totalmente: aos heteus, e aos amorreus, e aos cananeus, e aos pherezeus, e aos heveus, e aos jebuseus, como te ordenou o Senhor teu Deus.

18 In order that they may not teach you to do in accordance with all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; and ye would thus sin against the Lord your God.

Para que vos não ensinem a fazer conforme a todas as suas abominações, que fizeram a seus deuses, e pequeis contra o Senhor vosso Deus.

19 When thou besiegest a city a long time, to make war against it to capture it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them; for of them thou mayest eat, and thou shalt not cut them down, [for man liveth of the trees of the field, ] to employ them in thy siege;

Quando sitiares uma cidade por muitos dias, pelejando contra ela para a tomar, não destruirás o seu arvoredo, metendo nele o machado, porque dele comerás: pelo que o não cortarás (pois o arvoredo do campo é o mantimento do homem), para que sirva de tranqueira diante de ti

20 Only those trees of which thou knowest that they are not fruit-trees, thou mayest destroy and cut down; and [thus] thou canst build bulwarks against the city that wageth war with thee, until it be subdued.

Mas as árvores que souberes que não são árvores de comer, destrui-las-ás e corta-las-ás: e contra a cidade que guerrear contra ti edificarás tranqueiras, até que esta seja derribada.
