1 Samuel 16

1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him so as not to reign over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lechemite; for I have selected among his sons unto myself a king.

Então disse o Senhor a Samuel: Até quando terás dó de Saul, havendo-o eu rejeitado, para que não reine sobre Israel? enche o teu vaso de azeite, e vem, enviar-te-ei a Jessé o beth-lehemita; porque dentre os seus filhos me tenho provido de um rei.

2 And Samuel said, How shall I go? if Saul should hear it, he would kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, To sacrifice unto the Lord am I come.

Porém disse Samuel: Como irei eu? pois, ouvindo-o Saul, me matará. Então disse o Senhor: Toma uma bezerra das vacas em tuas mãos, e dize: Vim para sacrificar ao Senhor.

3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let thee know what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint unto me the one whom I will say unto thee.

E convidarás a Jessé ao sacrifício: e eu te farei saber o que as de fazer, e ungir-me-ás a quem eu te disser.

4 And Samuel did that which the Lord had spoken, and came to Beth-lechem. And the elders of the town came hastily to meet him, and said, Peace to thee at thy coming.

Fez pois Samuel o que dissera o Senhor, e veio a Beth-lehem: então os anciãos da cidade sairam ao encontro, tremendo, e disseram: De paz é a tua vinda?

5 And he said, Peace: to sacrifice unto the Lord am I come; sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.

E disse ele: É de paz, vim sacrificar ao Senhor; santificai-vos, e vinde comigo ao sacrifício. E santificou ele a Jessé e a seus filhos, e os convidou ao sacrifício.

6 And it came to pass, when they came, that he saw Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is [here] before him.

E sucedeu que, entrando eles, viu a Eliah, e disse: Certamente está perante o Senhor o seu ungido.

7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Regard not his appearance, nor the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for not what man looketh on; —for man looketh on the eyes, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Porém o Senhor disse a Samuel: Não atentes para a sua aparência, nem para a altura da sua estatura, porque o tenho rejeitado, porque o Senhor não vê como vê o homem, pois o homem vê o que está diante dos olhos, porém o Senhor olha para o coração

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and caused him to pass before Samuel. And he said, This one also hath the Lord not chosen.

Então chamou Jessé a Abinadab: e o fez passar diante de Samuel, o qual disse: Nem a este tem escolhido o Senhor.

9 Then Jesse caused Shammah to pass by. And he said, This one also hath the Lord not chosen.

Então Jessé fez passar a Samma: porém disse: Tão pouco a este tem escolhido o Senhor.

10 And Jesse caused seven of his sons to pass before Samuel: and Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not made choice of these.

Assim fez passar Jessé a seus sete filhos diante de Samuel: porém Samuel disse a Jessé: O Senhor não tem escolhido a estes.

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are there not more young men? And he said, There is yet left behind the youngest, and, behold, he is feeding the flocks. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he have come hither.

Disse mais Samuel a Jessé: Acabaram-se os mancebos? E disse: Ainda falta o menor, e eis que apascenta as ovelhas. Disse pois Samuel a Jessé: Envia, e manda-o chamar, porquanto não nos assentaremos em roda da mesa até que ele venha aqui.

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, having withal handsome eyes, and being of a goodly appearance. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

Então mandou, e o trouxe (e era ruivo e formoso de semblante e de boa presença): e disse o Senhor: Levanta-te, e unge-o, porque este mesmo é

13 Then took Samuel the horn of oil, and anointed him from among his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came suddenly upon David from that day and forward. And Samuel then rose up, and went to Ramah.

Então Samuel tomou o vaso do azeite, e ungiu-o no meio de seus irmãos; e desde aquele dia em diante o espírito do Senhor se apoderou de David: então Samuel se levantou, e se tornou a Rama.

14 And the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and there troubled him an evil spirit from the Lord.

E o espírito do Senhor se retirou de Saul, e o assombrava o espírito mau da parte do Senhor.

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

Então os criados de Saul lhe disseram: Eis que agora o espírito mau da parte do Senhor te assombra:

16 Let our Lord but say [the word], and thy servants, now before thee, will seek out a man, who is skilful as a player on the harp; and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, that thou mayest be well.

Diga pois nosso senhor a seus servos, que estão em tua presença, que busquem um homem que saiba tocar harpa, e será que, quando o espírito mau da parte do Senhor vier sobre ti, então ele tocará com a sua mão, e te acharás melhor

17 And Saul said unto his servants, Select for me, I pray you, a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

Então disse Saul aos seus servos: buscai-me pois um homem que toque bem, e trazei-mo.

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lechemite, who is skilful as a player, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and intelligent in speech, and a person of a good form, and the Lord is with him.

Então respondeu um dos mancebos, e disse: Eis que tenho visto a um filho de Jessé, o beth-lehemita, que sabe tocar, e é valente e animoso, e homem de guerra, e sisudo em palavras, e de gentil presença: o Senhor é com ele

19 Thereupon Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the flocks.

E Saul enviou mensageiros a Jessé, dizendo: Envia-me David, teu filho, o que está com as ovelhas.

20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them through David his son unto Saul.

Então tomou Jessé um jumento carregado de pão, e um odre de vinho, e um cabrito, e enviou-os a Saul pela mão de David, seu filho.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.

Assim David veio a Saul, e esteve perante ele, e o amou muito, e foi seu pagem de armas.

22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my eyes.

Então Saul mandou dizer a Jessé: Deixa estar a David perante mim, pois achou graça em meus olhos.

23 And it came to pass, when the spirit of God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand; so Saul became relieved, and he felt well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

E sucedia que, quando o espírito mau da parte de Deus vinha sobre Saul, David tomava a harpa, e a tocava com a sua mão; então Saul sentia alívio, e se achava melhor, e o espírito mau se retirava dele.
