< Psalms 4 >

1 For the End, a Song of David among [the ]Psalms. When I called upon [him], the God of my righteousness heard me: you have made room for me in tribulation; pity me, and listen to my prayer.
“For the leader of the music; to be accompanied with stringed instruments. A psalm of David.” Hear me, when I call, O God of my righteousness! Thou hast helped me, when I was in trouble, —Have pity upon me, and hear my prayer!
2 O you sons of men, how long [will you be] slow of heart? therefore do you love vanity, and seek falsehood? (Pause)
How long, O men! will ye dishonor my dignity? How long will ye love vanity, and seek disappointment? (Pause)
3 But know you that the Lord has done wondrous things for his holy one: the Lord will hear me when I cry to him.
Know ye that the LORD hath exalted one that is devoted to him; The LORD will hear, when I call upon him.
4 Be you angry, and sin not; feel compunction upon your beds for what you say in your hearts. (Pause)
Stand in awe, and sin no more; Commune with your hearts upon your beds, and desist! (Pause)
5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, and trust in the Lord.
Offer sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the LORD!
6 Many say, Who will show us good things? the light of your countenance, O Lord, has been manifested towards us.
There are many who say, Who will show us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us!
7 You have put gladness into my heart: they have been satisfied with the fruit of their corn and wine and oil.
Thou puttest gladness into my heart, Greater than theirs, when their corn and wine are abundant.
8 I will both lie down in peace and sleep: for you, Lord, only have caused me to dwell securely.
I will lay me down in peace, and sleep: For thou alone, O LORD! makest me dwell in safety.
